    I had the pleasure of taking a weekend of lessons with Kai a couple of years back. You definitely got that that practicer part right; he said that he still, even after 40+ years of playing the drums, aims to practice an hour every single day, with mirrors in front of him, and both the left and the right side of him, on a practice pad, just working on his hand technique. And you could really tell that. You're also spot on about him being such a nice and a humble guy.

But I´ve seen Heikki with Finntroll as well and the guy is a beast on the drums as well. Same goes for Jocke Wallgren from Amon Amarth or Daniel Erlandsson from Arch Enemy, to bring in some swedish "counterparts"...I assume to play drums in metal and especially extreme metal, you need to bring a decent amount of talent and skills and tons of practice. The vibes I get from them are that Jukka is a soul trapped in flesh who experiences freedom through playing the drums, while Kai is a machine with a soul that he expresses through his drums. One is about the experience of the expression, and the other is about expression through an experience; a subtle but meaningful difference which makes for two distinct but equally impressive and entertaining viewing experiences.

    Then I have at least one thing in common with Kai. I've always felt it was foolish to start learning a new skill, especially one that uses both hands like drumming, as a leftie. Why bother turning everything around every time I go to a lesson or a gig with a shared kit? I just learned the way most people play drums.

  • @marcel1416

    I know little to nothing about drumming, but I play Snooker and Billiards as a hobby - and I for myself as a right handed person play Billiards with my left hand - and I know why: I am left eye dominant, so when I put a queue under my chin my left eye is dominantly producing the picture to my brain (and centers it around it, perspective wise) and my right eye is completing the picture. I don't know if that might be a factor with drumming, but I know a lot of sports rely on the dominant eye rather than hand dominance. But even if this doesn't matter to drumming - Kai is a beast :D

  • @LordBaktor

    @LordBaktor

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@marcel1416 I would assume eye dominance is not a big factor in drumming because I spend like half my practice time with my eyes closed to feel my way around the drums rather than seeing it, but I would be a weirdo and everybody else in the world uses their dominant eye. What do I know?

    I had the honor of sitting behind Kai Hahto's kit on a Wintersun gig some eight years ago and it was mindblowing. I learned more on that night than I had for years.

    Yeah. Nightwish isn’t as intense as Wintersin but the technicalities are still there. Kai adds his own flare. Sons of Winter and Stars is one song, with a little 'acoustic' guitar (no drums) section in the middle. It gives Kai some time to drink some water, wipe his face and check his kit. It's only a one and a half minute break though in a song of 13.5 minutes. Fun fact: he did drum some improvised bits over the part that is actually his break.

I was in the crowd and tried my camera for the first time that day, so sorry for the shaky hand and the sound.(I was too excited to watching him and got distracted sometimes... ) The cut in the middle was tho the fact that I didnt know the song at that time and thought it was over... luckily i pressed the record button again. Kai told me afterwards that is was his first clinic outside of finland. Also since he was explaining and showing some techniques to the crowd (playing/talking/playing/talking...) he had to play the whole song out of the cold, what was quite challenging.

    Masterful drumming. The full band version live is so much better when you hear the drumming in it's right element. Since the camera angle is static it doesn't really add anything.

    damn, I've always loved Kai Hahto, but never actually thought about his accuracy. He's like a machine, 100% locked in to the tempo. Alex Rüdinger is the second one that comes to my mind with as precise playing. In those straight parts the groove is so precise it almost doesn't sound human at all. Thankfully he also has great humane groove on the not-so-straight parts lol

    The studio recordings of "Hate Eternal - Faceless One" or "Hate Eternal - Behold Judas". @@soundworks1554 It's a deeply touching, sadly beautiful album. Last voices of that nightingale, Aleah Stanbridge (Starbridge), the singer, wife of Juha Raivio, the guitarrist. She died at 39 years (for cancer), and they already knew it coming. Many/most of the songs reflect that - in the mood, but also the lyrics. An album you cannot listen to without crying kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZ2gvLuSZaSenag.html
