Nightwish might be the greatest band people have never heard of but discover eventually. Wintersun are probably the greatest band that people have never heard of and never will. Thanks for finding them. They deserve so much more recognition.

I agree, the horrifying reality is that Sons of Winter and Stars is the second best song of the masterpiece Pump studio performance, Time is IMO a sublime masterwork which, marginally, supersedes this amazing song. This album is beyond mortal compare.

Kai Hahto's displacement of snare hits is second to none, every time I listen to this song there's something new to discover. Wonderful reaction!

They all play Ibanez (except Kai of course plays Pearl). Teemu on his guitar: "My main guitars are a blue Ibanez LACS RGA Custom and a modified early ’90s graphic series USA Custom RG. The blue custom (drop-C) has an RGA body with custom scoops on both sides. The neck is based on my 1987 Ibanez Jem LNG and is slightly rounder and thicker than most Jem necks. Wintersun is finnish 🇫🇮 metal band from capitol Helsinki. Jari Mäenpää (guitarist leadsinger) is mastermind behind the band and Wintersun started as his soloproject while he was still playing in Ensiferum (great finnish metal band also 😉). Jari writes all the songs and instruments, but drums. Kai is really drumcomposer and he thinks alot how to back up song with drums. His mixes styles and sometimes he plays more jazz than metal 😄. Other wizards are Teemu Mäntysaari (greenguitar = Ibanez also) and Jukka Koskinen (bass). You should react other two songs from same rehearsals Time and Land of Snow and Sorrow. All these rehearsal songs are from Time 1 album. Forest Seasons album is really great. Awaken From the Dark Slumber (spring), Forest That Weeps (summer), Eternal Darkness (autumn) and Loneliness (winter) all official lyric videos. Really dope consept album. First album Wintersun has really great songs like Death and Healing, Starchild, Winter Madness, Sadness and Hate, etc. 🙏🏼😎✌🏼

It can be a little overwhelming at first, but repeated listening's help separate layers, each playing more rewarding than the last. Nice reaction!

It is always mind blowing hearing Jari sing like that, he had tuberculosis and parts of his lungs had to be removed.

A great composer, a poet, the man behind everything, Fan Fact: He is missing a third of his right lung due to tuberculosis he suffered back in 1997 while he was in the army. What to tell about Kai; He's an Atomic Clock!!!

Time is a must, an eqally epic song, just so much more beautiful. Jari and Teemu are some of the best guitarist you'll ever come across. Jari writes and composes all of Wintersuns songs. He is not an inexperienced guitarist, it is just his teqhnique. Teemu on the other hand is mesmerizing to watch play. His teqhnique is utterly perfect and sublime. You should really check out a video called "Teemus winter madness giveaway" There Teemu opens with the solo for the song Winter Madness, and it is out of this world. He also shows and discusses picking teqhnique for some of the patterns they use on some of their songs. As a guitar player I think you'll love that one 😉

Probably one of the best bands that people have never heard about. After this you totally get why Jukka literally hand picked Kai to take over from him. The man is metronomic in his precision.

Actually Jukka and Kai has been friends for a very long time. When Jukka had problems with drumming tehcniques, Kai was teaching and helping him to fix those problems/unhealthy drumming techniques. Also Kai was a drum technician on couple of Nightwish studio albums before the replacement.

You can now see why you got this recommendation, every member has musicality and skill off the charts.

Wintersun is incredible. This whole album is a masterpiece. And they don't have a bad song. You should check out "Time" from the same rehearsal session. Jari (the singer) is the songwriter of the band. He writes and records most of the music himself. He also is missing part of a lung due to an old illness. He's insane. I got to see them live a while back and they're just as good live. The atmosphere during this song at live shows is just unreal.

Jari does also have a very unorthodox picking/fingering technique, it just looks really weird/stressful but that's how he plays.

I discovered Wintersun about 4 months ago and absolutely fell in love with this song. I too am not a fan of screaming/growling but the technicality and composition of their songs just drew me in and overwhelmed me. I feel like I need to listen to this song every day, without it the day just doesn't seem right somehow. Great reaction, maybe check out the other songs from the same rehearsal.

Hey guys :-) You should watch a video called "Kai Hahto - Warm Up Solo". Just watch it to see what amazing drummer he is. I discovered NW from the Wacken concert & I think Jukka is an incredible monster on the drums, but, the more I watch songs & shows with Kai, the more I'm convinced of what a phenomenal musician he is.

Jukka has awesome stage presence that distracts most people from what he is actually playing. He is a great drummer but Kai is a whole other level. I can hear the differences when Kai plays old NW songs. He displays his style mostly in the “fills and rolls” in those old NW songs.

Fun fact: Jari (the singer) has lost 1/4 of his lung due to an operation in his early 20s. It's unbelievable how he has the stamina to play and sing at the same time and hit those high and long notes, which require a lot of air / pressure.

IIRC, Kai started in jazz and then got into grindcore before doing this stuff. That explains why he’s so good.

See, we were lying about Kai and his ability to play like a human metronom - completely different drum style in Wintersun and just as brilliant as in Nightwish. Jari Mäenpää is the lead vocalist and he sically the brain behind everything. He planned to perform and record each instrument for the first album himself, he still required a drummer. He sent demos to Kai Hahto, who agreed to perform the drums. The rest is history

And actually Jari asked Kai if he could MAKE the drum parts for this as it's something that Kai does better than Jari could (or that's what I've read/heard).

Honestly, you were recommended this because it's Kai's other band but I think we forgot how much you'd enjoy the guitar! Always love hearing any technical details you have to share based on your own experiences

Great review, Wintersun are just Phenomenal,there is no other band out there like them. The vocalist is called Jari and it's entirely his band, he created it on his own after leaving Enseferum. He composes all the music himself, literally everything is Jari. By the way, you mentioned he looks the least experienced on guitar, you have that so wrong. He is outrageously good on guitar and is well known for being one of the best shredders in the world. His sweeps are insanely fast and clean. Teemu, the second guitarist is amazing aswell but everything you hear is composed and originally played by Jari. Quite simply, Jari is a guitar god and a true composition Genius. He no longer plays guitar live anymore as he wanted to focus fully on his vocal performance on stage so they now have another great guitarist called Asim. Jari still plays guitar as much as he ever did, just not live anymore ( playing guitar live at that level of complexity and screaming your heart out as you can imagine is extremely demanding. He can now run about the stage with far more freedom). In short, Jari is a fucking genius and Wintersun are simply INCREDIBLE 👌👌🤘🤘🤘🤘

lol, Jari (lead vocalist) wrote all those guitar parts (and everything else) and it looks weird when he plays because he has abnormally long fingers. He was able to play like that at 18 years age, so he doesn't lack experience at all :D Cool react, though, thank you! It was fun!

Oh man, I still remember my first encounter with this band like it was yesterday. Some 12-13 years ago one of my friends told me "check out this cool band I just found," and put on Wintersun's debut album. I was in middle school at the time, just starting to discover the world of metal, and boy oh boy I was in love from the opening riff of the first song. They're absolutely phenomenal musicians and I love seeing them get the recognition they deserve.

A bit info about Kai. When he started play a long time ago, there where only setups for right handed drummers. and he is lefthanded. so he started to train . that whay he learnd to do the exact samething with his left side as the right :) Check out drumtalk [episode 48] With Kai Hahto :)

Kai Hahto is probably the best drummer in the world. Reactors when watching Ghost love score often focus on Floor because she's amazing but Kai's work on that is absolutely out of this world.

Thank you for reacting to this song so quickly! It's been a while since I've listened to this, and I've forgotten how this song never fails to put a smile on my face. I never get tired of people being completely awestruck by how amazing this band is. I will note that this particular recording uses more guitar work than the version that's heard on their album, Time 1, and honestly I rather like it. Nevertheless, Wintersun have put out a lyric video for this song that's worth checking out. That lyric video likely represents the song as the songwriter Jari envisioned it. If you want _another_ Wintersun song to react to, I (and I'm sure many others) recommend "Time," which was also recorded as a live rehearsal at Sonic Pump Studios. Although I don't like the song quite as much as Sons of Winter and Stars, it's still an awesome song and absolutely worth checking out. On your own time you may want to check out the self-titled "Wintersun" album for other great songs, including "Battle Against Time" and "Starchild." Thank you so much! You should also check out and react to upcoming finnish band called Smackboud. I promise, you won´t regret it... :)

As well as the usual recommendations for Time, for another look at Jari's (the lead vocalist) guitar work, take a look at Winter Madness (live at Nosturi, Helsinki, 2012). One of the best guitar solos ever IMO.

The part when you say that's not an eletric guitar sound, it totally is ! it's called a Piezo pickup wich captures the sound of the strings on the bridge, you can see the switch on the guitar next to the volume knob !

I don't want to say "I told you so". But... well... I kinda did ;) Glad you both enjoyed this one. If you enjoyed this song, you owe it to yourselves to do an album playthrough as the entire thing is BONKERS good. In my top-10 metal albums of all time to be sure.

Harry not sure if anyone posted the info below or not but the question you had about Teemu's blue guitar or not but it is an Ibanez LACS based on the RG line.

you should take a look at "EPICA - consign to Oblivion live at Zenith" (Paris). sure you'll love it !!!! Epica is another European band of symphonic metal. the lead singer Simone is great and this live in Paris was AMAZING ! For more, the 10 anniversary live is a good start with, for example, "design your universe". this live was done with a real symphonic orchestra behind. incredible !!!!

The guitar is a LACS Ibanez RGA With a reversed headstock

You pic my fav band one by one, Sabaton, Wintersun, NW, and so on. Just got to love Wintersun. There is a lot more. But I would challenge you to another band. From Sweden. It is completely different from this but yet the speed and tightnes. It has a lot of growling in it.. and that something that many doesn’t like. But look at it not only as singing but rather yet another pecusion instument. This is a band that plays a lot of polyrhythms and so on. Thats what I like about them, it is complecated technically advanced music. If you know music and play yourself you will understand. They play experimental extreme metal with influences of progressive jazz. And the dummer has been awarded many times the best drummer in the world. The band is called meshuggah. There are a lot of good sons clockwork, born in dissonance, but if yiu like drums I would suggest Bleed. But don’t make the mistake of looking at the official video. You will get distracted by the video and it is only half of the song and you will miss a guitar solo that is amazing and very much a fusion jazz solo. So I would say go with the drum cam video you will hear all band members but can look at the dummer. In this song he flips everything around so what many drummers would do with the hands he does with his feets. It took him 6 month to learn this song.. and I guess it sais it all. If you check it out.. enjoy 💪🏻🇸🇪❤️

Kai Hahto always looks so very happy when he is banging away on his drums, and it's clearly visible that he has a background in grind core. Rotten Sound was one of the first bands he was in, 12 albums with them if I'm not wrong. Yes Kai is sweating a lot, I heard in an interview that he usually drinks at least one liter of water before a concert, and then keeps hydrating thru-out the whole concert. I have also heard Kai apologizing for sweating so much, but I don't think there's any need for him to do that. It's very hard and physical work to play the drums (like chopping wood) and it's a natural thing that you sweat a lot when you work as hard as Kai does. I'm sure you have come across comments on Nightwish videos where it is said something like "Kai is good but he is not Jukka (the original drummer in Nightwish). I would like to think that it is easier to understand and appreciate what Kai is doing for Nightwish if you know him from Wintersun. Jari's screams or fry's is probably the one's I like the most in this genre of music. I would like to call it "Clear Screams" or "Clear Fry's" because you can hear every word he is singing, while in many other bands it's more like some caveman grunting and you can't hear a single word of it. There's more in Wintersun's portfolio so please do more of them. Cheers / B.
