Nailed this one quickly, in deed. i reckon it was also the lens being VERY good. ;) Anyway..the highlight was the weather, actually, seeing Chris in short sleeves in Canada, at the end of October is pretty surprising. beautiful golden hour ...and damn...that cloud/snow storm coming...incredible. i wish he had shot that.., with the Tamron.. Excellent review Jordan. As one parses the features of the Canon Eos R and the Nikon Z series one begins to understand that the in body stabilization of the Nikon allows one to consider a very wide variety of third party lenses that would not be as "convenient" for those desiring OS on the otherwise excellent Canon mirrorless Eos R. With a lens this size OS would appear to be very important.

I shoot Nikon, but have a friend who shoots Canon. We both bought the lens and are extremely happy with it. He says it closes in on the legendary 135mm Canon lens. Far better than the Nikon versions. It does vignette at f/1.4 but has minimal CA, is super sharp, and despite a comment above, has beautiful color rendition.

It took me a long time to find situations where I enjoy the 35mm focal length (or equivilent at around 22mm). These days I use it for video and casual comic/scifi/anime convention phototography of people in costumes while walking around the events. I'm curious about Tamron's upcoming mirrorless lens, though it doesn't look like they have IS, which would have been very nice on the 20mm.

不思議のトマ The Tamron 45mm is criminally underrated! It’s the best 50mm lens (even though it’s not a 50mm) I freaking love mine...like Chris, I am not a fan of the 35mm focal range but I do have the Tamron 35mm f/1.8 and when it does make it out of my bag, it always gets the job done...man I wish they would make a 28mm in the F mount.

Rishi, I am quoting you from memory something like "We used the Tamron 35mm F1.4 on the Nikon Z7 because it does not need AF Fine Tune". You may be correct with your copy of the lens, but I will come down like a ton of bricks on anybody moaning about not getting the iris sharp with eye AF on the Z7. Nikon added the AF Fine Tune menu option on the Z7 for the more technically minded, pixel peeping, mad perfectionists like me. Thank you for an excellent and entertaining review, Rishi!

How does it AF on the Z7? I have one with my Z6 on the FTZ (firmware 2.10). AF is swift and spot on at 1.4 and eye AF works great. But once stopped down to F4 and beyond, AF is noticeably slower and focus distant subjects there is often a fake focus lock-on where the AF stops and thought it acquired focus while it doesn’t. This is a huge disappointment on an otherwise perfect 35mm lens. I wonder if you see such problem on the Z7? If not, what could be the possible explanation to what I am experiencing?

he zhu I have both. I’d go for the 35 1.8S for the Z6. It’s almost as sharp as the Tamron (both very good), focuses perfectly (of course) with the Z6 and it’s much lighter and smaller. I got the Tamron because I want the smoothest bokeh at 1.4 (Tamron beats the 1.8A hands down) but on the Z6 it’s hard to use unless you are always shooting wide open. For landscape shots you will either need to autofocus at 1.4 and then stop down, or to go with manual focus

in china, the lens' price dropped greatly, from 650$ to now 500$, which resulted a saying that the new batch of tamron 35 1.4 is not as good as the old one, since Tamron dropped the price to compete with sigma 35 1.4. I don't know if it is true or it is just a traditional slippery bad trick for the owners of tamron 35 1.4 to hold their tamron's price in second hand market.

Regarding the point of the Tamron lens having more aberrations but this is something you can "fix in post" - this really isn't something I would encourage... That is the cheap trick of smartphones - a physically poor lens and two inches of post-processing make up to make it look alright. We should not give lens manufacturers the idea of cutting corners to save money because it can be "fixed in post". The consumer, the industry and the profession will all suffer.

Nick the 35mm is closer to what the eye actually sees. Not the 50mm. And certainly not the 24mm. Most of the time, we are shooting wide. Love wide angle. It’s not subjective or personal likes. It’s what looks closest to the human eye would see and that’s 35mm. Do some research

@@pfwinbar The 45mm is closest (42mm is roughly the FOV of the human eye.)

This might be the resolution king but the coating makes for boring colors and contrast.
