    Great review. I ended up selling my beloved EF 35mm f2 IS after buying this lens. It is a steal for the price/performance. Agree about the weight and magnification as the cons but that is expected for a fast 1.4. I would also add the AF sound is slightly noticable in video but again that is expected since it's pushing heavy glass around quickly. I don't think I would ever sell it unless someone made a version that was lighter.

    Thanks so much! Glad to hear you're enjoying it. I considered mentioning the AF sound for video but then that would open the review up to a whole lot more tests and I figured this isn't a super video-friendly lens (lack of IS) so thought I'd focus on the photo side. Totally agreed though that slight cons aside, this is a spectacular lens :)

Do you mind share your thoughts on both lenses? Thanks!

    Thanks for watching! Greetings from Japan! If you're already in the mirrorless system I'd recommend the RF 35mm, it's a great lens for the price and solid performing in general. Plus it's smaller and made by Canon specifically for their mirrorless line :) the 1.8 vs 1.4 will not be significant in most cases.

    I guess it would depend on your setup and subject... AF worked well with Canon but without stabilization you could need a stabilised sensor or gimbal to make the best of it. I've heard there are issues with the IBIS in the R6 and R5 at the moment but those should be fixed very soon.

    Hello, great review! However, I still can't get what's the advantage over the 35/F1.8 Di VC USD when the actual 1.4f causes such vignetting, distortion, lack of VC AND it's around $150 more expensive? (maybe I'm dumb, lol)

  • @ScottDumas

    @ScottDumas

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't think that the problems of the 1.4 are too significantly worse than the 1.8, aside from the VC in the 1.8 version... but generally speaking 1.4 lenses can be significantly more expensive than 1.8, often even $1,000 different- so considering that the $150 price jump isn't too bad, and it's more understandable that there's no VC (although unfortunate)

    I have the 1.8 older version, honestly I used to hate it, I'd pain it in purple to match it's amount of CA lol.... But to be honest lately trying to adjust and prepare for a full frame mirrorless, I learned to.... I'd say agree with it and I get pretty ok results, though I wouldn't prefer now the 1..4 version, I'd prefer it to be 1..8 but to have IS. BTW, planing to get the R5 (still hasn't decide which kidney to give up on or which bank to rob ;-) ) Hope you'll get it for review or something, will be really interesting.

    Hi Dimus, Is it the Tamron f1.8 version that has too much CA or are you talking about another version, as I want the 1.8 for the IS but I'm torn between the 1.4 less CA but more vignette and the 1.8 version CA - what do you think?

  • @DimusTech

    @DimusTech

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Photographersforyou I'd say it depends on the camera as well, I use now more the Tamron 35mm 1.8 with my Canon R5 and I see less CA and it has IS, but in some cases you might not need that much the IS as a faster lens with 1.4 for example

  • @Photographersforyou

    @Photographersforyou

    3 жыл бұрын

    So Dimus, your saying that with a 45 mp the CA is better ? Can I ask you, as I have a 45mp Nikon D850 - is the CA bad, and can it be removed easily ? Because I love the close focus distance of the 1.8 compared to the 1.4 however I feel the 1.4 would not suffer with CA and also be sharper and more accurate focusing/ speed from what I see in reviews. How sharp is the 1.8 ? And is it sharp? And fast accurate autofocus ? etc.... any info would be appreciated.

    @@cnottagejr Right, typically with Canon full frame lenses can also go onto the crop sensor camera mount. But there are also lenses made for crop sensor cameras and they're usually cheaper but if you oppositely use them on a full frame camera, you'll have black edges since the lens doesn't cover the full size sensor. In either case, a 35mm lens will always be 35mm based on full frame measurements. So if it's a full frame 35mm lens or a crop sensor 35mm lens, it will look the same (in both cases it will appear to crop the center of a typical 35mm image so it looks like the field of view you'd expect from a 50ish mm lens).
