Great review as always. I am really loving this lens on my D810. Tamron is really knocking it out of the park. I changed my trinity of lenses over to the G2 range and have never regretted it. One of my first ever lenses was an older Tamron zoom that I never got on with. I was initially reticent to buy another, but reviews like this helped to change my mind for the G2 line. Never looked back. Keep up the good work, Dustin.

I just got my Tamron 35 f1.4 for Nikon yesterday, 04-17-2020. I had no intentions of buying but Tamron is until Sunday offering 200.00 off at B and H, bringing the lens down to 699.00 and my local camera dealer took an extra 75.00 dollars off, bringing it down to 625.00 plus tax, around 666.00 all in. I ordered it and drove there and the guy bought it out to me. Tamron out did themselves with this lens and they showed what they can do when they want to do it. Great review Dustin as always.

Great review as usual. 35 mm is my favourite FL. I am a happy Tamron customer. Being budget conscious, I consider their products bang for bucks. Among their lenses I have also the 35 1.8VC which is extremely versatile and I am planning to keep for travel/close up photography, but seen your review I could not resist and I bought the 1.4 too. Your beautiful shots show clearly how 1.4 lenses have a touch of magic that slower lenses just don't have. I'll receive the lens soon, can't wait to try it. Thanks again, keep up the great job .

Great review! Much appreciated. An obviously great lens but I am likely going to stick with my 1.8 for now. Close focusing and good max mag are main reasons I got this lens over the Sigma. Those factors remain important to me. The center sharpness is fine for me at least. It focuses amazingly well on my D610. So, hard to let all of that go!

I thought this was a mediocre review of what amounts to one of the best 35mm AF lenses ever made. I don't mean that Dustin didn't review the lens well, but he never says that this is an amazing lens. It's just an okay lens, better than the Sigma, not as good as the Canon, etc. I completely disagree and I immediately sold my Nikon 35mm f1.4G lens after testing this lens for a week straight. I'm not sure what is wrong with Dustin, but this is an astoundingly good lens and possibly the best 35mm I have ever used. I think it deserves much higher acclimation and this is the first and ONLY review where someone gives this lens a mediocre review. Everyone else who has reviewed this lens would disagree.

Hiya Dustin, Thank you for this fantastic series of reviews. I assume your AF tuning using a controlled focus field scale? Do you think you would have achieved better results with a Tap In? I'm debating between this and a 24-70 G2 to replace my Nikkor 24-120. Thing is, with a 15-30G1, Voigtlander 58, CZ 85 and a Nikkor 70-200, I'm fairly adequately covered in terms of focal range. What I don't have is a wider autofocus for portraits. If the AF is good for capturing toddlers in the Jungle Gym, around the house and in parks, I might decide to go for the prime IQ for landacapes over the 24-70 and retain the 24-120 as a back up lightweight travel solution to my Fuji XT30 kit.

  • @DustinAbbottTWI

Hi Dustin, I love all your videos that interest me, they are very thorough. I want to ask a question if you can. 1. Does this 35mm focus accurately with mid and outer focus point. 2. I had an issue with the tamron 24-70mm where at 2.8 (especially 70mm) when fine tuned with tapin console, would back focus a lot more at f5.6 and beyond and almost very little towards the front - I believe its called spherical aberration (focus shift) - does this lens exhibit anything like this ? Would appreciate your comments thanks.

Mt favorite walk-around lens for my Canon is Tamron's 24-70mm f2.8 G2 and your sample images from this one remind me of it. The rendering or "pop" is very similar and even looks like the images were run through a small amount of "dynamic contrast" (from ON1's software) instead of being straight out of camera. Very impressive. By comparison my Sigma lenses, while sharp, just seem flat(er).

Obviously Sony native glass works better, however everything I have from 14mm to 600mm works pretty darn well on this camera. I am hoping Canon can produce an a9 type body so we can really get the benefits of instantaneous tracking like Sony native glass on an a9 which is special to experience.

Hey Dustin, in your experience with using this lens on your Canon DSLRs, did you have any issue with focus accuracy using edge autofocus points? I have this for Nikon F mount, and really only find it usable to use the center point and focus and recompose. All the outer points just don't work, front focusing like crazy. Maybe this is normal or I'm not sure. Center point af fine tuned nails, but just frustrating using it for moving people as you can't really focus and recompose when people are changing depth/distance. Thanks!

Hello Dustin! Regarding this vs a Canon 35 1.4 L ii, price aside, would you say the Canon still has some advantage at CA from this special BR optics glass inside? I'm so torn between the Tamron and a used Canon because they seem soooo similar. My main concern remains CA as I want those lenses for nighttime 1.4 shots, for example on vacation in Tokyo with lots of bright lights. Thanks for any input on this subject - from watching the videos alone it seems the Tamron doesn't have problems in that regard but Canon just markets this BR optics so prominently.

Dustin it would be really useful and informative if you could post an update video on how this lens performs when adapted on camera such as the EOS R. Since the EF to R adapter from Canon provides native compatibility and the AF works on the sensor plane, it could mean that this lens has great accuracy and consistency, in that specific combo. Would you consider making that test and let us know on the results?

I owned the 35 1.8 VC on my Nikon D700 when it first came out, loved it, but ended up selling my Nikon stuff when I switched back to Canon. Since upgrading to a 1D MK IV from my 7D I have been looking for a 35mm. Was about to buy a Used 35mm 1.4L (first one) for $650. Decided on this lens instead. I think VC is overrated, I never used it.
