    If you've heard anything about the SP 35mm F/1.4 from Tamron you'll probably know it's currently being elevated to Jedi status for it's excellent sharpness and creamy bokeh. There's so much more to the story. Tamron's 40th Anniversary entry the SP line shines in this capable, albeit slightly nuanced fast prime.

    The hood that came with my 100-400mm L lens also has a locking mechanism. Not sure about the other L lenses. But it’s certainly worth noting that the one on my L lens has a bit of play in it. The one on my Tamron 35mm does not. The lens mount is the same story: My L lens has a small amount of play, while the Tamron is tightly married to the body with practically zero movement. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my L lens! But it’s interesting to see this difference in those finer details when comparing this lens to one that around $1500 more.

    It's a matter of opinion of course, but I longer portrait lens might be more versatile in more situations over a more normal focal length light the 35mm F/1.4. The 35-150 is scary sharp and honestly for most clients you'll probably want a little bit more focal length. If you do a lot of studio work I don't you'll miss those two or three stops. Again, just my two cents :)

    Good review. Mic sounded great. Are you saying a 35mm-150mm is sharper and better than a prime lens for IQ? That would be a first. More versatile for sure but better IQ? What was the model? In the 35mm Tammy, do you recommend the 1.4 over the 1.8? Less CA I believe in the newer glass. Also, as a former engineering student, I have a very easy fix for your cap. If it will stay in place without locking, break the mechanism. Then sand it smooth (to avoid scratching) and/or maybe put a nice thin piece of electrical tape over that. The tape might also help keep the lens in place. Optionally, if you have a Dremel, you might first start by simply removing all or part of the nub that locks into place. I haven't seen the design but it should be extremely easy to figure out. They might even sell other hoods without the locking tab.

    Hey DG, thanks for the suggestion on the lens hood. Yes, they of course make other lens hoods. Seeing as this was a loaner lens it's no biggie. Speaking of that, this video was nearly three years ago now. The 35-150mm remains one of my favorite lenses of all time. You're right in that many people always say primes are better in terms of image quality and generally I think most people throw "image quality" under big umbrella of sharpness, distortion and chromatic aberration. In that sense it would depend on the prime; as you say, quality varies widely.

    Hi Adam, Thanks for the video. I used to have a Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art, but I sold it cause it was not enough sharp on my 6D Mark ii. Based on the reviews what I've found about this new Tamron, maybe this is the solution for me. What do you think about its sharpness compare to Sigma 35 1.4 Art? Do you have any experience with it?

  • @AdamWelch

    @AdamWelch

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jozef, one of the lenses I've used the most over my career is the Sigma 24mm F/1.4 Art, which is virtually identical to the Sigma 35mm F/1.4 Art saving for an additional two elements and slightly larger in diameter, so that's about as close of a comparison as I can give. So in that respect, I found the sharpness between the Sigma 24mm and Tamron 35mm SP quite similar. However, the Tamron is about 113g (4oz) heavier than the Sigma, which is fairly substantial. I feel it's worth mentioning that Tamron's new 35mm F/2.8 is virtually as sharp as their 35mm SP version. It does suffer from an enormously loud AF mechanism, however. But aside from that the performance was absolutely incredible for the price. Here's the review of that lens (and 24mm version) kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIqn27KypNGdXdI.html Just food for thought!

    I don't think I've ever used the Sigma 35mm F/1.4 (at least I don't think) but I do own the Sigma 24mm F/1.4 Art and it is likely one of if not THE sharpest lens I own. The 24mm is also about 300g lighter than the Tamron 35mm. I say all that because I would assume that the Sigma 35mm F/1.4 would be quite similar to the 24mm F/1.4 and, if that's the case, I would likely prefer the 35mm Sigma over the Tamron if for only the difference in weight as my Sigma was equally as sharp as the Tamron 35mm F/1.4 I tested. In truth, I don't think you will be disappointed in either lens. They truly are quite similar.

    Hi Sam, the difference between an F/1.8 and an F/1.4 lens is roughly about two-thirds of a stop of light. Not much. So the F/1.4 lens is technically faster, which means you can shoot slightly faster shutter speeds and still achieve the same exposure as with the F/1.8 lens at slower shutter speeds. All that being said, although some lenses perform better at certain apertures than others, the difference truly is negligible for most practical purposes and most practical photographers. I hope that helps.
