Felder wrote 99% of the music for this song, while Henley wrote most of the lyrics. The song would be meaningless without Henley's words and vocals, but the song wouldn't exist without Felder's musical genius. On the "Hotel" album, the credits list "Felder, Henley, and Frey". On some later releases, the credits mysteriously change to "Henley, Frey, and Felder". I guess that it's "artistic license" to re-write history...others would just call it old-fashioned greed.

It has cost friendship and robbed the music fans worldwide of what could have been.

Its not about who's a better musician... Its OBVIOUS Henley and Frey are successful solo artists. Nobody can dispute that. Look at this way, If it werent for Felder, there would be NO 'Hotel California' which is the most famous and successful tune the Eagles ever made. I've seen interviews with both Henley and Frey making negative comments about Felder and everything else. Their dicks. Plain and simple. But they sure make damn great music and I can't fault them for that.

Okay the Eagles biggest hit Hotel California and another huge hit Life in the Fast lane music were written by Felder(Hotel California about 90%), Frey and Henly(lyrics), Walsh(Life in the fast lane about 60%), Frey(lyrics) and Felder. If you actually break down and they were more honest on who brought what, I can bet you Henly/Frey had more help from the others than they give the others credit for. Also I can believe the story how they decided to make all members full partners of the band(with the exclusion of first Joe and then Tim) because it all had to do with them starting out as Linda Rondstadts back up band and Linda stealing one of their songs "Desperado".

I just listened to tull, Felder talks about how when writing not just him but everyone is aware of trying not to sound like something else. The problem is theres only seven notes in a scale and theres over a billion people trying to come up with a new combination. As an attempted obscure songwriter myself Im heavily influenced by classic rock, Ive had people say to me “That sounds like a zeppelin song” and another “That sounds like a stones song” Not a particular song, they just sound like something either one of those would have wrote, not that anything Ive written is worthy of those groups, its more in that style. I don’t want to sound like them thats just my influences coming out. Hotel california is basically a standard progression, he even says he was just noodling probably going with basic music theory while he was watching the seagulls and that fell out. Jimmy Page got molested for stairway to heaven, Ive listened to the other song and it’s worth investigating. If you want to go down that road listen to Eric Clapton’s “Let it grow”, I think you’ll find some similarity there to. Did anyone call Clapton out on the carpet? If they did I never heard about it.

George Harrison got fornicated for “My Sweet Lord” by the supremes because he took basically 3, maybe 4 chords, and put them in the same order as the supremes song. Now that I know about that if I listen to them back to back I can hear it, but if some coc’d up lawyer didn’t point it out I still probably wouldn’t have picked up on it to this day. Are you going to tell a contemporary painter that he cant use the color blue cause some guy in the 9th century made a blue painting? Anyone of us can get sued for writing a song that sounds like a song only 15 people have ever heard because they had it copywriten. How were you supposed to know? Even if you went through all the proper channels to have it verified you could still find yourself having to lawyer up.

@@erichinton5774 Got it. The details I wasn’t sure of, its the controversy that stuck with me. I understand you can’t let people outright steal stuff, but how do we deal with it? Especially now when any rube can pay $50, or whatever the cost is, and get a copyright for a song no one’s ever heard while sitting on their toilet at 3 o’clock in the morning. Sometimes I wonder if anything’s worth the effort. My wife, a baker, is facing the harsh reality, you need a $50,000.00 loan and a mountain of certified paper work just to sell cupcakes legally, and we live in a relatively low regulation state. Something’s gotta change, but it won’t. Yes, I understand you can’t just let people do whatever they want, wherever they want, whenever they want, there has to be some kind of order, but still. So what the hell are we doing here?

But, that is not taking anything away from every one of the Eagles. Everybody in the band being extremely talented has a lot to do with their success.

Once Felder left, I lost all interest in the Eagles. I still think Henley has one of the best rock voices of all time, but I can get that on his solo stuff. The hired guns they have in the band now just don't cut it. They need to hang it up.

People call Henley and Frey egomaniacs, perhaps with some justification, but the situation is not so simple to leave the assessment there. By his own admission, Don Felder said that Henley and Frey ended up doing the bulk of the song-writing work on The Eagles, with Henley being called a "song-writing machine" during the interview. If you saw your name on 60% of the songs on an album, but you only received a 20% share of the proceeds (no matter how much money that might be), you might begin to get the idea that you were doing most of the work and carrying the other members of the band. Who hasn't experienced a situation like that in other lines of work? Stuff like that can definitely lead to resentment, which could stifle the output of a artistic individual, where their mental state is so key to their ability to produce. I've never seen an interview with either Henley or Frey, but my guess is that neither is the type to just let things go while negative feelings build up in their minds: they take action. Granted, many of the actions that they took were not justified, or even good ideas. The hiding of major expenses from Felder, the CFO of The Eagles Corporation(!), is a glaring example. I'm guessing that Henley and Frey did what they did in order to fully stake their claim to their large contributions to The Eagles. If they did nothing, their hurt feelings could disrupt their creativity, which is both their bread-and-butter and the core of their personalities.

  • @warptek

I think you misunderstood. Henley became a song writing machine in response to what Don Felder had become in the band. In other words Henley/Frey was beginning to feel threatened by Felder's incredible talent.

Charles Black It should be remembered that we haven't seen or heard Henley and Frey's perspective on these matters. Even so, I'll grant you that there may be no real justification for their behavior. Still, I think it's going a bit far to call them "horrible people." Very, very little in this world is black-&-white or fits into nice, pigeon-hole definitions. People are complicated and their motivations are complex, Frey and Henley being no exception. Their actions may produce bad effects, but does that make them bad people? Were their intentions bad from the outset?

Greg Gonzalez Well, legally, Felder was totally in the right. Seriously, I think a big part of the problem is that Henley and especially Frey take themselves so seriously, Felder never has. Its also clear, from Felder's book, that he doesn't respect Frey's early country hits. Many people agree with him. Henley was of course, a fantastic talent, but controlling to the point of being ridiculed.
