Charles Leclerc has made some sizable errors this season. Smashing it over the curb at Imola, leading to a trip to the barrier. Then was just pushing it too far this week, venturing onto a dirty patch of the circuit and sending him into the wall.
These seem like huge errors, ones that may rule him out of the championship this year - but I’m not so sure. How many mistakes had Max and Lewis made by this point last season?
Let’s get into it.
So what mistakes am I on about? Well, there are two main mistakes this season that I would class as a ‘Big Deal’.
The first would be the chicane in Imola - Charles was pushing too hard and LAUNCHED it over the curb.
Go back and look at that replay, he brakes too late and enters the corner with WAY too much speed. He then takes too much curb, leading to the plank hitting the sausage curb and pirouetting his Ferrari into the wall.
A slam dunk driver mistake. He was in third at the time, but it sent him down to 8th. The final result was 7th, but that cost him 7 points. And in a championship where two drivers have pretty equal cars, that’s a lot.
Then there is the mistake in France, Verstappen had put incredible pressure on Charles, and neither had made any mistakes. So Verstappen boxed to overtake, with Charles staying out.
To avoid the undercut Leclerc was pushing SO hard, and went off at Turn 11. The double left.
Now this is a really difficult corner, I have driven a few F1 cars around this circuit - and they present a unique challenge as they take so much speed through that double right.

@@GreatJO The GP2 Engine was a result of McLaren not allowing the engine enough cooling AND Honda giving in to them. If you look at McLaren after switching away from Honda we still see the same kind of failures which are directly attributable to lack of cooling and moving the engine (the whole package) out of its reliable operating temperature. Last year and this year we are still seeing the same indications of overheating leading to failures; they have simply not learned to control temperatures in their core power train - maybe Honda not screaming at them to change is partly at fault (bullies don't change until you hit them square in the face) but Renault did not complain (because they needed money) and Mercedes are not making enough noise about McLaren's poor packaging last year and this but likely on competitive grounds. On the other hand, Red Bull worked with Honda and gave the package the literal space needed for the engine to breath and not die like a dog locked in a car parked in the desert sun.

I have the perspective that; 1- Max is driving like he has too many penalty points that don't go away until November I believe, and with a stricter enforcement this season = calculated and low risk precision driving 2- Charles is driving like he's chasing a Championship with nothing to lose, always pushing the limit like Max did last year 3- Carlos was over the limit last year but reeled it in by mid season, this year he built up his pace and confidence, but has yet to hit the limit and may even stop just short and allowing himself to become consistent at the quicker pace. 3- Checo is trying to use his tire guru advantage while simultaneously providing defence, default of quali grid results, but he has yet to find the sweet spot...may be due to new tire heating and management...learning curve for lack of better words. Outside of that it's hard to say as the season has offered some strange and wild outcomes...Williams 1-3 in FP3 today for instance, well deserved Nicky!!

Do you think he has any chance to try to save it after it started spinning? I kinda disagree, although i like leclerc he made the mistakes when he wasn’t battling and was not able to recover. They are unforced errors with big consequences. Last year i only see Hamilton in Imola and max with his q3 lap with unforced errors. However they both managed to recover losing the minimal amount of points. I think leclerc will learn a lot from this year and will be ready next year. The guy is really rapid and a good racer but needs to know when a p2 or p3 is the maximum result and not try to hard to achieve that impossible p1. Cause lets not forget that Max had his fair share of unlucky moments this year as well and yet he had this lead.

Nearly all of, if not all, of the mistakes you mentioned for Max and Lewis were involving some form of overtake. Charles' error in France wasn't around an overtake so could be classed as an unforced error (an error which has nothing to do with an opponent but the pressure you place on yourself)? My biggest pet peeve with fans of any sports and their expectations is that we, as observers, take for granted the consistent performances proffesional athletes put in to be at the top of their game. It's almost "expected" for a world chamption to show up to any race and drive 50-70 laps within tenths or even hundreths of a seconds of the theoretical maximum pace of the car and not put "a foot wrong". I think people tend to forget these drivers are only human after all. It is not "normal" to have just a handful of mistakes across thousands of racing laps. That is not normal- that is GREATNESS.

I agree that Charles hasn't made too many driver errors so far this season. Last year we saw both championship contenders had multiple "big deal" or "minor mistake" type of incidents but most of them resulted in the drivers losing 1 or 2 positions. This single mistake from Leclerc in France potentially cost him 32 points in the championship (he would've narrowed the gap by 7 points, but instead Max's lead increased by 25 points). It's impossible for a driver to not have a single mistake throughout the whole season and it's unfair to expect a mistake-free season from any driver when they are constantly on the limit. The most important thing is that you make fewer mistakes and whether you can minimise the damage in the standings.

  • @ehsnils

It's easier to make mistakes in a car that's not consistent or that's very unforgiving when driven on the edge. Some vehicles gives a lot of feedback allowing the driver to fine tune the driving while others are perfect up to the point where it's just losing it and can't be recovered.

Not sure if I agree with this analysis. Everyone makes mistakes, but what counts is when you make them and what the effect of it is. With most of the incidents mentioned between Max and Lewis last year, they either just switched positions or still had an opportunity to do pretty effective damage control. Only Hamiltons mistake at Baku did cost him dearly in the championship. And that moment of Max at Bahrein, is that really a mistake or just a failed attempt to overtake when two drivers are really pushing each other to the very limit? Leclerc on the other hand now has made two big mistakes he couldn't recover from. And both times when he wasn't under direct pressure, these weren't mistakes while fighting for position. Combined with the both tactical and technical vulnerability of Ferrari, Leclerc does need a bit of a miracle to make Verstappen nervous. The championship certainly isn't over yet, but Verstappen is leading much more comfortably than he should have been, considering how close the actual racing between the two is.

This is simply the biggest target and highest profile position Ferrari has been in for a while, and who doesn't like focusing on the biggest, oldest name in Formula 1. This is no different than with HAAS early on, with Kmag having some good races and the chatter began on replacing Mick midseason. Well, 2 things happened, Mick had some good races and Ferrari's started blowing up - UH-OH, RED! it's all about red now! If not for reliability, Charles would be in the lead even with his mistakes.
