Do men need to check their privilege? | FACTUAL FEMINIST

Do men need to check their privilege? Gender activists tell us that men carry around with them an invisible knapsack of advantage. Well, is this true and is it the whole story? AEI Scholar Christina Hoff Sommers checks the facts.

Transcript:
If you are willing to cherry pick, stretch the truth a bit, and suppress counterevidence, you can easily make it seem like women are the have-nots in our society. You point to the wage gap, the glass ceiling. You focus on women’s vulnerability to body shaming, sexual objectification, mansplaining, street harassment, intimate partner violence. Before long you will have constructed a full-scale patriarchy. And we have hundreds of women’s groups who do just that-they specialize in persuading us that Venus is victimized and Mars is privileged. But here is the problem. Women’s advocacy groups tend to exaggerate the plight of Venus and ignore the troubles on Mars. As I have tried to show in earlier segments of this series, most of the standard feminist injustice statistics are exaggerated or just plain wrong. It not true that women are being cheated out of 23 percent of their salaries or that 1 in five will be victims of sexual assault. And it’s also the case that, in many critical domains, women are faring far better than men. Let’s consider a few: In education, it is women who are the privileged sex. At every level of education-from preschool to graduate school-and across all ethnic and class lines, women get better grades, win most of the honors and prizes, and are far more likely to go to college. Today, women earn a majority of BAs and advanced degrees. Our schools do a much better job educating women than men. Now look at the workplace. Women’s groups focus a lot of attention on people at the pinnacle of achievement-CEOs of Fortune 500 corporations, tenured physics professors at MIT, U.S. Senators-and they are right to say that there are too few women. But look what happens when you consider the entire workforce. There may be a tiny handful of women-but the lethal professions are largely a male preserve. As my favorite dissident feminist, Camille Paglia, has noted: "It is overwhelmingly men who do the dirty, dangerous work of building roads, pouring concrete, laying bricks, tarring roofs, hanging electric wires, excavating natural gas and sewage lines, cutting and clearing trees, and bulldozing ... So it’s no surprise that the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that every year about 5,000 Americans die each year in workplace accidents-92 percent of them men. We hear about the Fortune 500 CEOs, but what about the unfortunate 4,600? Alongside male salaries, perhaps some mention should be made of male sacrifice. Whenever perturbed gender warriors draw up lists of male advantages, they always mention men’s freedom from fear of being attacked. It’s true that women are much more likely to be victims of rape and sexual assault. But men are much more likely to be victims of violent crime as a whole: Consider Campus crime--men may need safe spaces more than women--according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics: Men are twice as likely to be victims of a violent crime on campus.
Look at the overall Murder: Of 12,253 murder victims in 2013, 78 percent were men. Even on the Internet, men face as much or more bullying than women. According to Pew Research, More women than men are sexually harassed (7% women and 4% men), but men are the primary targets of threats (10% men compared to 6% of women).
Let's continue: Here are more facts that challenge the male privilege mantra: Suicide: 77.9% were male, 22.1% female .
Incarceration: 93.3% of federal inmates are male and even when men and women commit the same crime and have similar criminal histories, men receive 63 percent longer prison sentences on average.
Homelessness: it’s estimated that more than 60% of homeless individuals are male. Combat: 85 percent of active duty soldiers are men. Though there are many women serving in the armed services, fewer than 8 percent profess a desire to engage in combat.

    hang on...CHS is not a 'real modern feminist' because she has a 'right wing ideology' Does that mean you can only be a 'real' feminist these days if you are a far left cultural marxist ideologue?

  • @simonsharp8218

    @simonsharp8218

    No, you're clearly the one who's being triggered. CHS has described herself repeatedly as a democrat and a liberal. If you view someone like that as 'ultra traditional' then you ver clearly are a far left cultural marxist. Her criticisms address what she sees as exaggerated claims and confirmation bias/poor/ non-existent research. Criticizing faulty reasoning doesn't make one an enemy of feminism. Disagree with what she raises....fine. But hysterically labeling her some kind of ultra right traditionalist just because she disagree with you values is silly. Clearly you have way too big a chip on your shoulder about this. This comment is for the benefit of someone else reading. I will not debate any further...its clearly pointless

  • @simonsharp8218

    There's your lesson ladies and gents. Use the word 'cultural Marxist'. That will trigger the far left fanatics and get them foaming at the mouth and calling you all sorts of names ('alt right' is currently the most fashionable). Everyone who disagrees with them is a right wing nut.... Even if someone protests they are a democrat and a liberal and are in support of feminism and have devoted years of their lives to the feminist cause. You are only allowed to be a feminist UNDER THEIR STRICT LEFT WING CRITERIA. If someone joins the wrong organizations ,speaks with people on the forbidden list, or critiques the core doctrine, then they are a part of the infidel...

    Ya know, I realized that recently too. I'm 30 now and I don't really like going to clubs, the girls only dance with other girls they know, and nowadays since the women are in large groups on purpose, you can't really just approach one of them and strike up a conversation before getting white knighted. I feel like women are going to eventually figure it out that our media and modern culture with modern feminism included is leading them to a life where they won't be as happy. A lot of women are starting to experience loneliness now and these women are starting to realize what the cost of their success and independence has given them. While I can respect an independent woman, I feel like these women can start to take some responsibility in their own faults and work on improving them just like we men should be doing too.

That's not a direct slight to you, please don't take it that way. It's just that most people don't know where feminism came from, the real causes that allowed it to spread, and the real effects it has had on our society. CH Sommers should have, and I'm sure in some form, DID exist in the beginning. They would have been drowned out as well in the fevered frenzy of female privilege back then too. At no point were women oppressed. The west could not have done what it has if they were. Women, historically, have raised the children. Did they all raise oppressive males? The idea seems ridiculous if you really spend some time reflecting on it.

Sargon has a great 10 part video series replying to that confusion. Watson didn't think about the positive and negatives of both genders. She was confused as to why men weren't flocking to the feminist banner when it "so clearly benefitted them as well". Blinders, much?

    Yes, I have so many privileges as a male that: 1.I cannot talk to a child without being called a pedo 2. I cannot show my emotions in public 3. I am forced to go to war and possibly die 4. I cannot defend myself against an agressor if the agressor is a female 5. I have to face female hypocrisy every day and if I contest it I'm am an opressor 6. Have less chance to stay with my children if my marriage ends 7. If i am abused and the female who abused me gets pregnant I can: -Loose my friends -Loose my girlfriend -Loose money -Loose my job. That is what you call male "privilege"?

    As the daughter of a construction worker, I just have to thank you for speaking out. A lot of feminists seem to think that my father has privileges because his job pays a lot, but I know that's not the case. My grandfather (whom is 59) already has a lot of problems with his body. After he retires at 60, his body is probably going to collapse very quickly because all those years of hard labor made his body need high amounts of physical activity to function. My father is probably going to be the same way, but despite that he tries to make the most of his life. People assume that because my father has a daughter at such a young age and because he isn't married that he's a playboy, but he's not. He goes on dates but doesn't bring them home or go home with them because he doesn't want me to get attached and them suddenly just leaving. My father thinks a lot about others feelings, and he doesn't deserved to be hated for his gender. I thank you again for making a sane argument, for standing up for others who would be shamed for doing so.

    Women have plenty of privileges over men: 1) They live longer, yet women get more funding for medical research. 2) The Law system biases heavily in their favor. They are less likely to be profiled for crimes and more likely to receive a lesser sentence. 3) They are not subjected to policies on some airlines which prohibits solo travelling children from sitting next to men. 4) Men are the 60:40 gender minority at college , but more gender based scholarships and assistance are offered to women 5) Substantially more shops cater for women 6) Women are held up by society in the west as the standard. So much so that it's common for people to address the way they speak when women are around. When a tragedy occurs, you will often hear how many female victims there were, and not men. Or female victims will be highlighted, ie 40 people died, including 10 women 7) Lets not forget Womens privilege of being able to have sex pretty much whenever they want. 8) Women can use their smartphones on the beach without the lifesaver pulling them up and checking they are not taking photos of children. 9) Many organisations are now implementing policies to hire more women giving them an advantage in getting a job at those organisations There's a lot more I could add

The problem though, is that the vast majority of people do not understand that women have privileges over men. If you dont know that, you cannot get to the point of talking about how both genders have privileges . It's instead going to be a one sided conversation if female privileges are not pointed out, and shown that there actually is two sides to the conversation

  • @haroldfinch9144

    @haroldfinch9144

    +Rex “Mind Lord” Smith It cannot be done for two reasons. 1) The majority of people must be made aware of those perks/detriments in order to accept them as a byproduct of a sexually dimorphic species existence. . Now this part is easy enough with people like Christina Hoff Sommers. I mean sure Women's groups will fight truth at every turn, but eventually truth can win out. The real trouble comes from the second part. 2) Having the more privileged group to give up the artificial privilege they have. This means giving up legal and social benefits; that were only made to exist because of the false perception that they were actually oppressed. To be clear you would need the majority of women to become okay with 1) No more mandatory child support, 2) No more educational privilege, 3) No more legal actions like "equal pay acts" and Title 9's, etc etc. To me that seems impossible to achieve.

    Often, people don't consider the plight of little boys. Little boys are told to be men. They're told to grow up proud and strong, and self-reliant. They're told to help others, but rely only on themselves. That if they can't do the job, they're not good enough. But worst of all, they're told that when life is unfair, well... tough. Life is unfair. We have lived, since the dawn of time, with that idea of what we should be in our heads. And for the most part, we've accepted it. That's just what "men" are supposed to be. It seems that radfems can't acknowledge that an issue exists until a bunch of people whine and bitch about it every goddamn day, but that is not how men do. I honestly just hate the term "privilege" being used to describe shit. Like when people say white people are privileged because they don't have to worry about police brutality as much as blacks. That's not a goddamn privilege, that's them being actually treated like goddamn human beings versus chattle. Since when was basic human rights a "privilege?" Women being favored for child custody over men is a privilege, men being significantly less likely to be raped is not. Men not having to worry about childcare leave in their careers is a privilege, women being less likely to be a victim of a violent crime in general is not. It honestly pisses me off when the regressive left and social justice warriors equate basic human rights to privilege. You know what has to happen to privileges in order to be an equal and just society? They have to be taken away. So their solution is instead of reforming the criminal justice system in our society, its to make whitey get the shit kicked out of them as much as their black brothers? How is that justice again?

    I don't know if you realized this yet Factual Feminist, but in sociology, they are teaching our peers about all of this. All of the wrongful teachings you brought up and debunked, they are teaching to fresh minds, polluting them. I can't speak for everyone, but a requirement for me to get my AA includes taking sociology, and the class makes me feel so wrong. I'm a woman, I don't feel oppressed, and I'm personally upset by the fact that they can paint men in such a bad light. These people our our fathers, our spouses, our friends, our children. It's so wrong and I would hope sociology would dissapeared if it can only teach lies to people, misleading people into stigma against certain groups.

Should we stop teaching about slavery as well because white people will get offended and say they're not like that anymore? +KewlImp Indeed. It's actually funny. I was able to earn quite a sum of money (enough so that I haven't had to work since my early 20's - if I play it right I'll be able to just sit around playing games all day even if I for some reaons live until I'm 80, which is unlikely because family history and treating my body very badly) so they could probably call me privileged. What happens when I check that privilege? Oh, right. Having an AUNT who was friends with the head of a publishing house who was able to get me published in my mid teens with the exact deal with the publisher I wanted so the money could slowly rack up to that point. And it continues today. I work for one of the game companies I play in a volunteer capacity. Brought on the team in general by a male but at the behest of a woman who then took on a new role and immediately put me on her team specifically. For a game led by 5 females (3 game leads, the head of moderators, and the head of the testers). My main "privileges" have been purely because of women in higher positions than me, in other words. Pretty sure that's the opposite of the point they were trying to make, but okay.

    Back when I was working as a lifeguard, at a fastfood place and at a bar, I had 1 or 2 women at each place bring up the wage gap in conversation at points. I told them I'd give them 23% of my wages if every time something heavy had to be carried, or something higher up had to be reached, or the trash had to be taken out at night, that they would always have to do it instead of me, and if I could get them to do the occasional task that I disliked by batting my eyelashes at them, an incredibly common and successful tactic that seemingly every girl at least tries. Probably the worst though was the handful of women I encountered throughout my computer science courses, who complained that it wasn't fair how few of them their were and how that somehow made the courses harder for them, and that the men would intimidate them and that it was a "hostile environment" where they were sexually harassed and discriminated against, as well as that being what's posted as fact in all the articles and whatnot on the subject, when those women would constantly take advantage of all the shy and awkward guys that dominated the comp sci environment, being inundated with eager offers every time they announced they were stuck or needed help, even being able to get them to go as far as completely doing their work for them as many of the guys would jump at the opportunity just to talk to a girl without her getting offended and rudely dismissing him just because he wasn't cool or good looking enough. A lot of them would even get free meals just for gracing one of the guys with her divine presence at a cafeteria or restaurant table. The fact that these women not only took full advantage of these guys without a second thought, but then went on to claim that they were somehow a victim in all this and those guys were predators, getting people to feel sorry for them and agree that the above "abuse" they endured entitled them to even more through reparations shows how manipulative, completely self-absorbed and despicable many women are. They're whole "make men do all the work and pay for everything and then pretend we want to do all the tougher work we refuse to do by pretending it's demeaning to be seen as weaker for not doing it" racket they've got going is incredible. They're ability to play both sides of the coin with things like making men pay for dinner and then pretending to be insulted by insisting that implies they're incapable of paying for dinner is manipulation at its finest. And they always keep that ace of their sleeves where anyone who dares question the system even the slightest is immediately and repeatedly labeled a sexist that hates women who is just mad because he can't get any. And don't even get me started on the fact that they can instantly ruin a man's life just by saying "he raped and/or sexually assaulted/harassed me!" Especially since it's entirely the guy's responsibility to make sure no sex is had while both have been drinking.

    Im 23, Im rotting in my apartment, I almost went into financial debt this chrismas and everyone expects me to provide, I worked my ass off for 6 years and got disrespected by both men and women, I go home to an empty apartment everyday, I tried getting a girlfriend and the whole gym thing, Im not that bad looking but apparently im not good enough, Im asked my salary, My height or a whole shopping list of items i need before i get into a relationship, No i dont need a car because i got 2 fine legs to walk on but societal pressure tells me i need a nice one, NO thanks, I got 2 legs, It would be nice with some female company, Before you call me a mysagenist, I would like to share, This account was created for memes, Memes are a way to spread satire images or videos, These are often exchanged between friends for laughs, Now everyone has theyre humor levels, Ok so let me continiue, Ive been through the whole tinder, Meet women loop, 6 years infact while working a dead end job, Ive dressed nicely, Ive done the usual, Some nice cologne, Hair done, Beard done, Nothing, I still come home to an empty apartment, Now im questioning if i am indeed ugly, I dont feel privileged at all, Im scared now to interact with the modern woman in fear of false accusations, I was once called sexist because i wanted to make an amulet for my future girlfriend in class at school, Some green haired feminist said i was a scum and a sexist for even thinking of making something for a woman, This culture is mostly hookup now or a quick fix, I want a relationship and someone to come home to, I want to leave all the Bs at a door when i come home, Hug my wife and kids which seems so far away because the new society of the west trains women they dont need men and are strong without them, I feel without purpose because apparently im not needed, I have blue eyes, Im 6 foot and not too bad looking but i always get rejected, I see online that its okay to spew misandry but misogyny is not, Why is one okay but not the other, Shouldnt both be banned for a harmonious society? Why do people always on the internet feel they need to be opressed, The wage gap has been debunked, Men often work more dangerous jobs and therefore with the risk of the job comes higher payment because he might DIE. I have a feminist sister and once i was eating she said all men are pigs, I didnt understand what feminism or all this crap was back then, I asked why am i a pig? Apparently its the same as all men think of boobs all day, No i dont, I think of needing new socks to wear if they break, I think of the new rc car i want, I think of wanting new friends, I think of wanting a relationship, Sometimes i just think this world needs a cigarette or a joint and chill TF out, Were way too competitive and the hatred doesnt help anyone, What privilege do i have? I dont feel privileged, Im not rich either, Just enough to get by, I do invest in hopes of aquiring wealth so i can escape this western hellwhole where im not needed, Im tired of being descriminated and bullied because i was born with a dick!, Cant i just be myself? Im not hurting anyone by breathing the same air as a female do?, Were both evolved with 2 legs 2 arms a head a torso, A few different parts elsewhere but mostly the same, Height and muscles might be a difference because men and females are biologically evolved different, For example some are built tall, Some are built short, But that doesnt mean they should not be accepted by society, Too many men are alone because they dont meet these toxic beauty standards and yes im gonna advocate for them. Women are fairly more pickier than men when it comes to dating, About 80% of men were rated below average, But they never think, What if this is a cool guy, What is he has some cool hobbies, Great to hang out with, Or a great partner besides looks, Im getting more and more tired of this society im actually considering moving to asia where women atleast appreciate men, I miss the days before the cellphone where all you needed was to be a good man, Now most women can hop on onlyfans and make millions over an asspic and a few videos whereas TOO MANY men rot in a factory waiting for judgement day or contemplating suicide, No there is no male privilege, If you want to be equal to us, BE THAT! But dont try to be superior, I see most sites where men can talk about theyre problems are being shut down while misandry pages are being celebrated, I DIDNT ASK FOR ALL THIS, When i grew up ive always been fed the lie you can be and do anything in life, My parents says im just lazy because i cant find a girl, NO! Im just tired, Tired of trying, Tired of thinking im good enough and waking up to new fresh hell every morning, Some people men and women are privileged in the sake of wealth, Not everyone is the 1% that takes all the cake, Not all men are models either and not all men can spew out 7 million dollars a day and drive a nice sportscar and come home to his mansion, You gotta question, Is she there for the money or him? Male suicide is more frequent than female suicide, And tiddy cancer awareness seems to be more socially accepted than talking about mens health and suicide, Hence why i never see mens suicide awareness when i enter a store, Only things that apply to a woman, Women also have it easier in dating, Men chase by instinct hence why we have simps, Women use these simps for money, Favours, Onlyfans or whatnot, He may just be a backup guy for a short time so the woman can look for a better option and leave him after draining his wallet, I as a man cannot do that as then im a mysagenist, You want equality? Then we might aswell do what a female can do too, Maybe im short on cash and need a handout, Were equal right? This inflation hit hard, Im surviving, My cat is well fed, He was homeless and i took him in, So are males privileged? No? Just because women had less rights back then doesnt mean they have less now, Infact women are more privileged than men, THEY always have safetynets, For example they can use simps for money instead of ending up on the streets, They can pretend to love a rich man for money, They can wait for an old man to die and she will be celabrated, Could a man do this? NO? Does a woman have to work a dead end doomer soulcrushing job? NO she has financial stabilty everywhere including the goverment, You want to be equal? Fine then dont complain about men have it better or try to be superiour, BE EQUAL, Even tho men and women are built different with different body physiology and strenght, Most men are also taller but i guess that is a privilege too, Now you got more to complain about while my taxes goes to single mothers who kicked theyre husband out because she wants to control the kids and the man working himself to death barely being able to see them, Is he privileged? No the woman will keep saying things between his back and he will get hate from the around peers, A woman doesnt even need evidence to sentence a man to jail, She just have to yell, THERES THE RAPIST, Gone he is and his chances are ruined, The world will know and now he is done for, I saw a soulcrushing post where this happened and the man killed himself after, Is suicide male privilege too? We are made to be providers for a family, Without that, Some men feel without purpose, Im not interested in hookup culture or male models, I just want to be me and accepted for who i am, Regardless of money and status, I want to feel human, Connection and love, There is no wonder men are giving up on western women, Im thinking of moving to asia find myself a traditional wife and starting a family where i atleast know she loves me for me and not my financial status or a sports car should i aquire all that, Theres little to none female rewards in todays society and a woman has 1000 simps to choose from whereas i tried tinder, Ok looking guy, Not even a reply! Dont start on my personality, I can easily hold a conversation if i want to, I can make people laugh but what im not okay with is that the new western feminazi society bashes men and tells us were not needed, Society would collapse if it werent for men breaking theyre backs every damn day to feed your bitching asses, Thank you for listening and have a great day! 23 year old doomer.

The only thing that would make it stupid is if men got to use it too. They realize then it would become stupid. The goose would stop laying the golden eggs (never ending societal support, resources, government programs, police and courts all on their side).... and the new goose would be bound only by evidence based statistics and guiding principles of fairness, and not kneejerk reactions to female whining damesel-effect. I have been a fan of Christina Hoff Sommers since I randomly read an article about her being shouted down by a group of college brats and their gutless professors at a speech she was giving at least 10 years ago. I immediately bought her book “The War against Boys” (so damn good) along with her ensuing publications and I follow her on KZread, etc.. She is a huge hero in my book and she has endured the cowardly rocks that get thrown at her by people who’ve never been in a real fight in their life. She stands tall & tough and men owe her a lot! This particular video is a “straight, no chaser” mini-explanation of why men need to wake up and take note of what’s going on around them. Guys, acquire knowledge and calmly express your rebuttal to those elements of society that have told you to shut-up! Do it for the guys that came before you and for the ones that are coming after you. Thank you Dr Sommers for your courage and your character.

    I was talking to a lady many years ago that I shared a house with when we were at University. She told me how she felt really safe in this town and had never had any trouble. I had by that time about 8 non-fault violent incidents which resulted in injury. After that conversation I was assaulted a 9th time and ended up in hospital overnight. She could not understand how guys are always at risk of being targeted by thugs/drunks/privileged women. To me, it's just a matter of fact I have never questioned or whined about and to me is just part of being male. Now I am older I steer away from dangerous areas and late night excursions in town and I drive almost everywhere, so I don't get this happening much anymore, but as a young male, it was frequent.
