The gender wage gap uses bogus statistics | FACTUAL FEMINIST

The gender wage gap came into focus this week, but not in the way the White House wanted. A reporter asked about AEI's study showing that Obama administration female staffers make only 88% of their male counterparts' salaries. Christina Hoff Sommers examines spokesman Jay Carney's response in this premiere episode of her video blog, "Factual Feminist."

I read a bit of it and am leery of some of it. The data is admittedly incomplete and sometimes had to be projected and inferences or hypothesis made. All that set aside, should women pay a price in industry because they bare children? For example, is it fair for a company to pay a woman less claiming her medical benefits cost the company more? Aren't the fathers of children equally financially culpable as they impregnated a woman whose health insurance costs will likely cost the company she works for (provided they provide healthcare) more? I am always suspicious of arguments from companies that use the potential of motherhood as an excuse to pay women less or worse, to not hire them at all.

  • @cupcake4emma

then do you propose we compensate for women just because they can bare children? They can't pay someone less, as if they did the work place would be filled with only women ( cue the statistics about asian countries who are site to almost all clothing retailers bc of that minimal salary they get) Essentially I think the gouvernement fucks us all wether we are men, women, black, white, asian, hispanic, gay, straight, bi, trans! IT's a global domination they seek. It might sound very sceptic but greed doesn't discriminate!

  • @bearnpici

I guess what I was proposing was that a man and a woman working the exact same job at the same level with the same experience and same performance should get paid the same. That a woman "may" bare a child should not allow the company to lower her pay arguing that the cost of her health is more expensive. 1) That woman may not bare a child. 2) If she did, her partner was part of that equation. It is the latter point I contemplated in a broad way. Especially as the article is treating the topic broadly. It takes both genders to produce offspring and hence both genders should bare the financial burden and the care/upbringing of children within our society. It reminds me of a male colleague's argument that he should not have to pay for educating other people's children and wished to not have to pay property taxes that went toward education. Later he had children and now reaps the benefit of everyone pitching in for the benefit of everyone's children. There are some things like this that seem more communal to me and the benefits society reaps from well educated children are huge. As well the benefits society reaps from healthcare provided for a woman throughout her pregnancy and during her birth are huge. And I feel both men and women should get time off work etc... I think it is true that if wages are extremely low that less educated, less trained people will likely get those jobs. In the case of clothing, those jobs did get filled more with women. However why this is the case is still something we'd need more data to understand in my opinion. But the lower wage is likely one factor. Governments are definitely problematic. Unfortunately those who gravitate toward the top are often power hungry and after money and control. Signs when a government becomes less representative and more autocratic are when they try to shut up the press, try to demolish checks and balances like overseeing committees checking ethics etc and generating blatant lies to stir the public up in a fog of false understanding. Good example is to shut out scientific analysis completely in order to steamroll ahead and use every tiny scrap of land for someone's profit at the expensive of the environment and the people living directly within the vicinity. I'm sure at some point some people would maybe argue 2+2 does not equal 4, but some other number of their own invention. Until it matters directly to their bottom line. And it is the money trail we should all carefully follow.

It's probably too late since this video was posted months ago, but here are my thoughts: I really enjoy listening to your videos; I find them to be insightful and they give a nice counter to the traditional twitter/tumblr feminism I see most of the time. I understand that these videos must already require a great deal of work, but it would be good to see some videos that dive even more extensively on various gender issues (for example, you mentioned that multiple factors contribute to the alleged gender pay gap, and I wouldn't mind seeing a 10-or-so minute video where you expound upon these points). Even more so, most of your videos act as fact checks for faulty or misleading figures purported by the media, which I find very useful and important in our sensationalized society. However, I would also love to hear some of your takes on issues that you feel women (and men) legitimately face today. In particular, I find that a huge amount of attention is spent on the suffering of women, but comparatively very little on the expectations and education of boys and men, who are generally seen as the offenders of these issues. I'd love your take on this if possible. Thanks!

I've got one question that nobody has been able to answer. Why is it, if this "wage gap" exists... do businesses just not employ women rather than men? Think about that.... if companies can save even a penny on labor.... take a look at longer term savings. Remember that trick question... would you take a $100,000 or a penny a day, double for 30 days? Their return would be insane in the long run.

Let me tell you if you ever trying to argue with a feminist, you already know that at some point, they would say something like this to justify everything. NO ACCOUNTABILITY! Oh yea all men just get together and decide not to pay women more... you can explain to the feminists in step by step easy to follow ways but it is their sexist man hating mindset that is the root of it.

Once you control for work experience, education, etc, the gap is about 98% instead of 77%. And even that is easily accounted for by women's choices. From what I understand women tend to prefer benefits, more time off, and working fewer, or less in demand hours (eg. less likely to work the night shift, or work overtime). And it makes so much sense. Because if as a business man, you could hire a women and pay her 77% of what you pay a man for the exact same work, why would you ever hire a man?

[The math works in reverse too--give Company A 6 women/4 men and Company C 4 women/6 men--and the men will collectively be paid less than the women.] Numbers can be skewed simply by altering which companies are chosen to compare.

Bless her heart (not in the southerner's mean sense) for standing up for truth. However, before getting all too carried away by Christina Hoff Summers, she continues to promote some kind of feminism, only a softer, gentler, more informed feminism, perhaps, but here around 3:22 she still says "Now it is not my claim that women no longer face discrimination in the United States ..." -- but that is just again the rhetoric of women's rights activists who manufacture "discrimination" issues by ignoring the other side. Everything about the myth of oppressed women is manufactured by deception with half-truths.

I remembered that a while back some Feminists were invited to Congress to Discuss the Suggested "Wage Gap". and the most common answer they gave to 90% of the information that was RELEVANT to the understanding of IF there is a pay gap was "WE DO NOT COLLECT THAT INFORMATION." Huh wonder why you would Refuse to accept information that would give you a Concise showing of IF there were a actual pay gap. but they did state that the Gap was determined not by ONLY FULL TIME EMPLOYEES like they claim but also part time. They admitted in congress that there was only about 1/3 the number of women Full time employees by choice as the men, so they treated PART TIME EMPLOYEES as the same as Full time employees. So they admitted to padding the numbers to BOOST their facts thus making them lies. Yes a part time Female employee is to be paid AS MUCH as a Full time woman so she can be counted when discussing the pay gap, rather then decreasing the number of MEN to make the number equal, because that TO would destroy their "FACTS"

She's probably using it to deliberately weasel out of having to mention any particularly contentious examples. But if I were going to explain it, I would say that it largely boils down to women making different life choices than men do, and that women are different from men due to innate, biological sexual dimorphism. On average, men focus more on their careers. They are less likely to divert their attention from their career towards their family. They are less likely to request time off for childcare. As a matter of statistical observation, married men are more highly motivated than unmarried men, but married women are less highly motivated than unmarried women. There's also the fact that male distributions of talent seem to be wider than female ones. Men have more geniuses and more idiots, whereas women tend to cluster more in the middle. There's also some cognitive functions which seem better developed for one sex than the other, such as men generally being better with visual-spatial reasoning. The differences that we know of as yet don't seem particularly relevant to the problem at hand, but it is nevertheless worth noting that men and women have different average profiles of talent, and that we do not yet understand the full extent of the differences, because we still have much to learn about the functioning of the human brain. And of course, an observed social or cultural disparity doesn't preclude the existence of an underlying biological cause, and an observed cognitive disparity doesn't preclude either a biological or a cultural cause. Stereotypes don't have to be either completely true or completely false, but can also be either over- or underestimations of actual differences in average characteristics - and such mistaken estimations, in turn, would be at least as likely to reflect honest human failure of rationality as antipathy or conscious exploitation. There's yet more that can be said about the conceptual relationships between map and territory and how both models could each be contextually appropriate for different situations, but I think I'll stop there. Needless to say, I feel I cannot in good conscience claim to know what's causing the gender gap, and I'm skeptical of anyone who proposes a simple, unambiguous explanation for it. That's why I'm opposed to political action at this point. Regulatory methods are heavy-handed at the best of times. And at this point, we don't even understand the problem we're trying to correct. It's not even clear to me that we should be thinking of it as a "problem." What I would like to see are small-to-medium-scale experimental trials and studies of possible causes and partial causes, not sweeping legislation.

From what I have experienced on the professional networking site Linkedin, feminist were deeply disappointed with the fact that the originally commonly reported wage gap statistic is WAY off and the real difference is closer to 4%. They rejected what was, essentially, good news. Baffling. However, this was more distressing. When asked to consider another gender-based workplace statistic-95% of workplace deaths are suffered by men-they thought the (imaginary) wage gap issue was more critical.

Believing that we are always just one more law away from a perfect society, is just a statist calamity that doesn't work. Ultimately, feminists need to realize that not working pays less than working, and collecting trash in foul weather pays more than sitting at a comfy desk surfing Facebook or Pinterest. Thankfully, that's still the way the world works. But their trick is to alway focus on the very top earners and whine about not having what that tiny minority (which the vast majority of men are not a part of either) that seems to have it all, has.

I've read most comments and watched the video, however, nobody ever mentioned the fact that race also plays a huge part in this discussion. Race, a topic that many are afraid to bring into conversation. The truth is, this isn't just about men and women, it's also about the ethnicity of women. The "statistics" of women here are being generalized, because yes, there is indeed a difference between how much white women, black women, hispanic women, etc. get payed and/or are prone to discrimination. I've noticed that in all of these videos, things are only seen and explained through the perception of caucasian women. The world of a woman of color is very disparate to that of a caucasian woman. This is leaving out a lot.

Before entering the video, my immediate response to the wage gap would be that the statistic probably comes from the average earnings of men versus women - not taking into account employer or position within the buisness, etc. This isn't to say it's okay that there are more men in high paying jobs, but if you compare two comparable job roles it would probably be the same pay. "Why play this game?" They play this game because they have their conclusion, and they need to make the data fit it. It's blatant academic dishonesty and manipulation of data to fit their model instead of making a model that fits the data. It's difficult to push the narrative that women are oppressed victims when the data shows that in the same circumstances, men and women are treated more or less equally. I find this particularly disturbing because western society is without a doubt the most open to women and egalitarian that has ever existed in history, and many gender activists seem to want the pendulum to swing in favor of women, rather than find a happy medium where everyone has equal rights. Just my thoughts on the issue...

"biped" :). The word in itself gives no information, that's why we need so many addictional adjectives. Since feminism has 1)bad etimology in the first place 2)nuts prevalence within the active part of the group, imo the sensible feminists are the ones who should drop the pseudolabel (which would then become a label again, therefore somehow useful)

Well that's not necessarily true. Median is usually a much better measure of central tendency for wages because extreme outliers can really skew the mean. If you used the mean to determine the central tendency of wages in a corporation for example, it would be way too high to be meaningful due to the small number of extremely rich people in the upper levels (CEO, etc.) throwing it off. Median is a much better tool in this situation.

*Please read the entire post before commenting. The conclusion I make by the end of the post is that we should remain agnostic on the existence of a gender pay gap, and anyone that definitively states one way or another is wrong.* *ORIGINAL POST 09/22/14* I don't see the real point you were trying to make for this video; all you were doing was denying the evidence presented, simply dismissing it as "specious". Until I see a valid counter-argument, I'm not going to believe that the gender wage gap doesn't exist. Others were able enough to provide statistics and figures that a wage gap exists, so why can't you provide evidence that one doesn't? *UPDATE 10/02/14* So, I did some research, and it turns out the gender pay gap in the United States does exist. It’s not as high as some people claim (the raw wage gap is at around 20%), but it does still exist at 4.8 - 7.1% when relevant factors are considered. I have posted below sections of a CONSAD study prepared for the U.S. Department of Labor. At the bottom of this post you will also find the PDF of the study so you can read it yourself. *Quoted Sections from CONSAD Report:* The following report prepared by CONSAD Research Corporation presents the results of a detailed statistical analysis of the attributes that contribute to the wage gap and a synopsis of the economic research that has been conducted on the issue. The major findings are: There are observable differences in the attributes of men and women that account for most of the wage gap. Statistical analysis that includes those variables has produced results that collectively account for between 65.1 and 76.4 percent of a raw gender wage gap of 20.4 percent, *and thereby leave an adjusted gender wage gap that is between 4.8 and 7.1 percent.* These variables include: A greater percentage of women than men tend to work part-time. Part-time work tends to pay less than full-timework. A greater percentage of women than men tend to leave the labor force for child birth, child care and elder care. Some of the wage gap is explained by the percentage of women who were not in the labor force during previous years, the age of women, and the number of children in the home. Women, especially working mothers, tend to value “family friendly” workplace policies more than men. Some of the wage gap is explained by industry and occupation, particularly, the percentage of women who work in the industry and occupation. The tables reveal that there are large differences between male workers and female workers in relation to many of the factors. In particular, Table 1 indicates that the average wage rate among males is 24 percent higher than the average wage rate among females. Women tend to work in industries and occupations where most of their coworkers are female; men tend to work in industries and occupations where most of their coworkers are male. Compared to women, a larger percentage of men work overtime, and men who work overtime work more overtime hours. Conversely, a larger percentage of female workers currently work part-time, especially for family-related reasons. A larger percentage of women have pursued education or training after obtaining high school diplomas or general educational development (GED) certificates, but a larger percentage of men have earned professional or doctoral degrees. Finally, a much larger percentage of women have been out of the labor force or have worked part-time during the last one to five years. In this study, an attempt has been made to use data from a large cross-sectional database, the Outgoing Rotation Group files of the 2007 CPS, to construct variables that satisfactorily characterize factors whose effects have previously been estimated only using longitudinal data, so that reliable estimates of those effects can be derived in an analysis of the cross-sectional data. Specifically, variables have been developed to represent career interruption among workers with specific gender, age, and number of children. Statistical analysis that includes those variables has produced results that collectively account for between 65.1 and 76.4 percent of a raw gender wage gap of 20.4 percent, *and thereby leave an adjusted gender wage gap that is between 4.8 and 7.1 percent.* *Read the PDF here:* www.consad.com/content/reports/Gender%20Wage%20Gap%20Final%20Report.pdf *UPDATE 10/18/14* So, it turns out I missed a very important part of the CONSAD report. The conclusion states that it is not possible to know whether a gender wage gap truly exists or not, because a thorough enough analysis on the 4.8 - 7.1 percent estimated gap isn't feasible. *QUOTE from CONSAD Report* In principle, the multiple counting could be eliminated by estimating the various proportions concurrently within a single comprehensive analysis that considers all of the factors simultaneously. Such an analysis is not feasible to conduct with the available databases. Some factors, such as occupation and industry, require data for very large numbers of workers to represent adequately the detailed groupings of employees or employers that existing research indicates best describe the effects of the factors. Other factors, such as work experience and job tenure, require data that describe the behavior of individual workers over extended time periods. The longitudinal data bases that contain such information include too few workers, however, to support adequate analysis of factors like occupation and industry; whereas the cross-sectional data bases that include enough workers to enable analysis of factors like occupation and industry do not collect data on individual workers over long enough periods to support adequate analysis of factors like work experience and job tenure. Further, analysis of compensating wage adjustments generally requires data from several independent and, often, specialized sources. As a result, it is not possible now, and doubtless will never be possible, to determine reliably whether any portion of the observed gender wage gap is not attributable to factors that compensate women and men differently on socially acceptable bases, and hence can confidently be attributed to overt discrimination against women. In addition, at a practical level, the complex combination of factors that collectively determine the wages paid to different individuals makes the formulation of policy that will reliably redress any overt discrimination that does exist a task that is, at least, daunting and, more likely, unachievable. *END QUOTE* In conclusion, it is impossible to say either "the wage gap definitely exists" or "the wage gap definitely does not exist". This particular video simply states that the statistics used by the media and politicians are incorrect, not that the wage gap definitely does not exist. In this sense, the video is right. I only wish that a reference to this study had been made in the video to save everyone time and effort, but in the end we now have the answer.

when working with statistics there are very few cases when you need to take and use a media value as an average for the whole group. one of the reasons to use it would be because it distorts the data to fit a point you are already trying to make. The median is just an awful average to use. imagine 99 men and 99 women and rank them in order, ascending usually but it doesn't matter. the median takes the wage of the 50th man and compares it to the wage of the 50th woman. Tell me, do you think that is going to show anything meaningful?

Graeme Evans Taking the median is actually more accurate than taking the mean when you want to find the average of data. However, I hope the researchers who conducted the studies to find the wage gap put a little more effort into their formulas than just "finding the median". Do you have a direct link to the journal?

more accurate than the mean? more "accurate"? i'd love to know your justification for that or even just what you mean by accurate if my data is 0,6,8,10,120, 2000, 10,000 then the median is 10. a median ignores the extreme and places an arbitrary importance on a middle number. On it's own it is practically useless at representing a set of data, with interquartile ranges it becomes slightly better at representing the data but on it's own it might as well be picking a random number. median takes into account every single piece of data and literally takes the average of them all. So how is that less "accurate"? pretty much every study takes the median, us, uk, everywhere. www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/295833/Analysis_of_the_Gender_Pay_Gap.pdf and the wiki on gender pag gap will take you to any studies you could need. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_pay_gap

I am a single mother of 4 children and have a degree in machining... I am good at what I do, and for the short story will explain that in previous positions, with my blueprints and part fabrication, I saved one company over 385,000 in ONE 6 month period. My machining instructor told me, that with my knowledge I should indeed be worth at LEAST 21.00/hr after I got out of school... at that particular position, I was making 10.00/ hour.. mind you, this was in the oilfield business. I transferred to another position, given a small raise, and then it was specified that I speak of my pay, with NO ONE! I believe, that it was because of the difference in the male pay VS. female pay. In this position, I more than quadrupled production, the person before me created 75 parts per day, with a normal scrap of 8-10 parts... I created 375 parts per day, with an average of 7 parts, out of tolerance. Recently I have been searching for a position, and no one would answer my resume... until I made one small change... instead of using my full name, I used, my first and middle initial, along with my last name....... within 24 hours of submitting a multitude of resumes, in this fashion, I received 4 phone calls. EACH time I responded "speaking" after they asked for the person on the resume... I received stutters and silence, after they composed themselves, they asked a few questions, and then told me they would call me back... It is SO irritating, that a woman who can do a good job in a man's field, get's treated like an outcast.... I STILL need to provide for my children, just as much as a man does.

Allainnia DeLo It is my experience, at least in the trades (carpentry, electric, et cetera) that companies ask all of their employees to keep what they're making to themselves. They do this because if they pay one person $20 they don't necessarily want their other employees who seem to be content with less to know about it. This is a universal practice. Most workers will frown on anyone who starts asking how much other employees get paid. Nothing to do with sex.

+Allainnia DeLo I would add that often times students are told estimates of wages that are unrealistic. This can be for many reasons: The school wants to keep the student in class, the teacher hasn't been in the workforce for awhile and their info is outdated, wages fluctuate based on the area and cost of living in that area. Also, it is illegal to pay less based on gender. If you can prove it you can sue and earn back wages at the very least.

Good stuff. Shouldn't we still make what efforts we can to stem the motherhood penalty though, considering they are the ones who are you know...repopulating the earth. Perhaps paid maternity leave, most westernized countries have that to some extant. Something else perhaps?

The world is overpopulated as it is, no need to crowd it by force - if you can't afford kids, don't have kids. it's really THAT simple. And women are not some divine beings conjuring our children from the mystical realm of narnia, they use male sperm and male DNA to do it, so enough with this forced elevation of women to some sort of godhood because the babies physically come out of them.

fidelbogen You apparently have no desire to get it straight. In the context of work, women take more of hit when they have kids. I think i'm safe in saying that's a consensus, non controversial statement. I was suggesting that we might take steps to soften the motherhood penalty, but thanks for the irrelevant quip anyway.

Thanks for this video. I am all up for equality and find it unacceptable that a woman would get paid less than a man simply for her gender. But indeed, that pay difference seems to be due to factors a lot of people want to ignore that have nothing to do with a male boss saying: "this worker of mine is a woman so I am going to pay her less".

Discrimination of any kind, and the workplace difficulties you mention, need to be addressed. I'm hoping over time this whole argument gets a bit more clear.

In my past employment as a technician with women co workers - in two different companies - I have experienced the following: The female co worker gravitated toward doing paper work, writing reports, performing simple tests etc., leaving the more difficult tasks of machine maintenance/systems repair, crawling under and around equipment, to the male (myself), refusing to be on - call for third shift emergency repairs etc. and yet insisting on Equal Pay. In other words, girls want 'girl-work' and 'man-pay'!!

In 2012, Yale did a study where scientists were in need of hiring someone. They gave the EXACT same resume to 200 researchers. The only difference was there two different names on it; one a male name and one female name. Turns out, both men and women were more likely to hire the male, ranked him higher in competency, and were willing to pay him $4000 more than the female. Please tell me how this isn't gender inequality.
