The Top Five Feminist Myths of All Time | FACTUAL FEMINIST

Domestic violence statistics, girls sold as sex slaves, the wage gap-- what are the real statistics behind the plight of American women? And are the real numbers beyond critical analysis? The Factual Feminist, Christina Hoff Sommers, takes a look beyond the headlines and reveals her list of the Top 5 feminist myths.

MYTH 1: Women are half the world’s population, working two-thirds of the world’s working hours, receiving 10% of the world’s income, owning less than 1% of the world’s property. This faux fact is routinely quoted by advocacy groups, the World Bank, Oxfam, and the United Nations. But it is a fabrication.
MYTH 2: Between 100,000 and 300,000 girls are sold into slavery each year in the United States. This sensational claim is a favorite of celebrities , journalists, advocates, and politicians-both conservative and liberal. The source for the figure is a 2001 report on child sexual exploitation by two University of Pennsylvania sociologists. But their 100,000-300,000 estimate referred to children at risk for exploitation-not actual victims.
MYTH 3: In the United States, 22-35% of women who visit hospital emergency rooms do so because of domestic violence. This claim has appeared in countless fact sheets, books, and articles. The Penguin Atlas uses the emergency room figure to justify placing the U.S. on par with Uganda and Haiti for intimate violence. I have it. What is the source? It seems that several feminist scholars misunderstood a 1997 study by the Justice Department. The correct figure is not 22-35%--but-GET READY -- less than half of 1 percent. One in five in college women will be sexually assaulted.
This incendiary figure is everywhere in the media today. The one-in-five figure is based on a survey called the Campus Sexual Assault Study. Two prominent criminologists have noted its fatal flaws: a very low response rate, a non-representative sample of respondents, and overly broad definitions of what counts as assault -which included such things as “attempted forced kissing” & intimate encounters while intoxicated. Defenders of the one-in-five figure will reply that the finding has been replicated by other studies. But these studies suffer from some or all of the same flaws.
MYTH 5: Women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man earns-for doing the same work. No matter how many times this wage gap claim is decisively refuted by economists, it always comes back. The bottom line: the 23-cent gender pay gap is simply the difference between the average earnings of all men and women working full-time. It does not account for differences in occupations, positions, education, job tenure, or hours worked per week. When such relevant factors are considered, the wage gap narrows to the point of vanishing. Wage gap activists say women with identical backgrounds and jobs as men still earn less. But they always fail to take into account critical variables.
These reckless claims are nearly impossible to correct because armies of advocates, journalists and political leaders depend on Killer stats to promote their cause. There is also an admirable human tendency to be protective of women-stories of female exploitation are readily believed. But killer stats undermine good causes and send scarce resources in the wrong direction.
My advice to women’s advocates: Take back the truth.

Akrak Sorry, incorrect. There are feminists that are for equality but the same cannot be said about the movement as a whole and any definition of feminism that would say otherwise simply do not map on to reality and is therefore, by definition, delusional. In the western world they are actually placed above men in many respects, so many in fact that averaging it out would show women coming out on top. The only systemic discrimination that exists in the west is favoring women, custody battles men lose by default or close to it, men are something like 25 times as likely to be convicted of crimes and even when women are convicted they get only 63% of the sentence men get for the same crime. In school boys are held to girl's behavioural standards and get penalized for simply being boys. In public opinion male lives matter only a fraction of a percent of a woman's, money given for gender specific cancer is given at a rate of 100-1 even though more men get and die from their's. Not even feminists before they were called feminists were for equality, men gave the state the right to draft them for the vote and then women got it for free just like the suffragettes wanted. These same anti-egalitarian, hypocritical cunts then went on white feather campaigns to shame men and boys into volunteering for service. But kudos for at least realizing that the profesional victims called third wave feminists exaggerate, though you really should investigate how deep that rabbit hole goes.

The professor commented that people still cling to old myths and just won't let go. One of my classmates chimed in "kind of like the gender pay gap myth". There were two girls that filed a complaint about this kid, claiming that they couldn't continue studying in a 'hostile environment'. It was the last week before finals, so the school had the two girls take their final in another room. But I don't want to get into feminism and college too much in this thread. I will say that I have studied feminism for years...just by earning a BA degree in the 21st century. If you've been in college in the last fifteen years, you know exactly what I'm talking about. I remember taking a photography class where we spent an hour, (give or take 10 minutes) every week discussing feminism. The disgusting part was that we never discussed feminist art (it was an art class, after all), only patriarchy, male privilege, and the omnipresent "pay gap". The men in class either were outspoken in support of feminism, or smart enough to just keep their mouth shut. And all I kept thinking about was "I just wanted to learn how to take better photographs..."

I suspect there is more than one cause of it (and some of them shouldn't strictly speaking be called phobias - for example dogmatic sex-negative religions). My point wasn't about homophobia though really, but it didn't come across - you lose a lot in delivery when you're reliant on written text.

Whether you consider labeling someone a "true" or "untrue" feminist depends on your definition of a feminist (i.e. the original definition featured in the dictionary or by the actions of contemporary feminists). You also misunderstand the meaning of the No True Scotsman fallacy.

bbtdgfan882 They're revolting, aren't they? :-) You see it's funny because it has a double-meaning. You might dislike them because they are repellent to you, and therefore are revolting, but they are also in an act of rebellion against something that has been placing them under a great deal of burden and stripped them of all self worth for decades and therefore they are revolting in that sense. It's a homonym! :-) But it's more than just a linguistic coincidence because it is anger itself that is ugly isn't it? You need to know: people are bitching for a reason. I'm writing an article on "10 feminists that MRAs should like". Obviously Sommers is one of the ten. I'm aware that the generalizations they make are wrong. But the brush with which we tar all feminists doesn't take it's tar from a minority; certainly not in the printed media - the 10 in my article are all rare exceptions. Personally, if someone is saying the right thing then it doesn't matter to me what label they have. If I was gay and I heard Desmond Tutu speak out against homophobia (which famously he has of course) it would not bother me that he was a Catholic, but I would still be suspicious of devout Catholics because I'd know that most will disapprove of me and my lifestyle. That's why the "revolting ones" are bitching about feminism. Don't take it personally. If you are reading and are influenced by feminists like Sommers or Cathy Young or Camille Paglia then it's very likely that the feminists we are referring to aren't you.

But I am a modern feminist. I identify with a lot of issues that modern feminists being light to. I disagree with some of their methods and stances, such as saying misandry isn't a real thing and the whole concept of "x privilege" (except when applied to the rich 'cause I mean, cone on), and some of their arguments against abortion are brainless, heartless, and appalling, but I am a modern feminist. I'm proud of it, too. I disagree with Sommers on some things, probably many things actually, but I respect her approach. I feel like some of the people commenting are just using her videos and opinions as an excuse to invalidate feminists. I know there are people out there who will just bitch for hours on end about feminism (I've dealt with some, actually) and there are a lot of people with wrong ideas about feminism, and sadly that includes some people who call themselves feminists, men and women. I do wish Ms. Sommers would maybe elaborate a little more about modern issues. Maybe it's a generation gap thing, I don't know. I'm trying to get more involved in social media to spread the word about what feminism should be, incorporating Ms. Sommers's methods. But yeah, my main concern here is people who just come here to bitch about feminism in all without even considering what they're saying.

I agree with all of this but at the end of the woman making less than men in the same jobs due to critical factors should of been expanded a little, not even mentioning all of those factors, just a few to get the rock rolling. :) Good vid, though. I agree.

SpikedYum A guy works on an oil rig in the dead middle of winter. Its 30 below, and the work is 12 hours a day 14 days straight with one week furloughs. Not only is the guy battling the "elements", he's away from home working on a site where he is in constant danger of losing his limbs, his overall health, or even his life. Its one of the most physical and mentally demanding jobs on the planet. The guy "earns" on average 30 something bucks an hour, with time and half, and double time. Compare this to a lady, or a man, who works at a till, or in a restaurant. How can you compare jobs? An inner construction site is extremely dangerous. People don't realize how hazardous an environment it really is until set foot into one. And guess what, men are the ones that "dominate" this sector. Logging, fishing, firefighting... The list goes on and on... Executive at companies are usually expected to be available 24/7. Theres a reason why they get paid a lot of money. They live, breath and shit one thing, the company they work for. A lot of women are simply not willing to commit themselves to such enterprising endeavours as their male counterparts.

People always talk about the feminist myths and then give factual information and an in depth analysis showing why they are in fact, myths. I would love to see someone, preferably a woman, since no one understands women better than other women, explain the deep seated reasons why feminists distort data and sometimes flat out lie to push their agenda. What is it that is truly driving their whole paradigm, ideology, agenda, etc.... Insecurity?... Not feeling like she is good enough?... Afraid that she won't be able to attract and keep a man?... Fear of getting hurt?.... Hatred/resentment towards men/society?... I could go on and on, but I don't know the real answer. It's definitely highly emotionally driven. Are there any women out there that think they can explain the real 'root' of the issue?...

juansilva1707 oh my bad, I'm personally using powered speakers. If you don't have powered speakers you can purchase a set for fairly cheap. Also i don't know if you know this or not but if you go into your speaker properties sometimes it gives you a option to use loudness equalization or boost the audio depending on what chip your using. Just trying to help btw not trying to make you seem dumb. btw I find that using audio equalization boosts low audio with my laptop even with powered speakers. if you don't know what a powered speaker is here is a link www.logitech.com/en-ca/product/multimedia-speakers-z200?crid=47 essentially has a built in amp...again just posting fyi if you don't already know. that's why i have no problem with any volume of any video unless it's 0 volume obviously ;)

Thanks so much Christina. You are a refreshing voice of reason. My mother found her own career in 1942, in spite of her mother telling her college was a waste of time because she was "only going to be a housewife". Welp, she blazed a trail, and got a solid career going in Social Work, and therapy, and teaching for 21 years at a University. I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and respected the pleas that I heard. I always refer to women as women, being uncomfortable with and disliking the term "girl". I grew up with two sisters, and was taught from an early age that boys don't hit girls. Ever. I never force myself on women, sometimes to the point that they're begging me to be sexual with them. So here I am now, 58 years old, as single as can be, and often accused of being a male chauvinist pig and "mansplaining" because I will point out stupidity, whether it comes from men or women. Feminism was never meant to be "Women are always right all of the time." It's such a shame, and actually tragic, because there are countries where women undergo awful abuse--life threatening, irrevocable physical mutilation, and actual ownership of their freedom from an oppressive male regime. And yet, the most hated group in this country is the white American male. Having said all that, I must commend you for going to bat (volley) for the truth. Please keep it up. You give me hope for the human race.

Hello, I deeply appreciate your work. What would be most helpful for each video I have seen in your series would be direct links to the citations you make in them. For example, in this video, it would be helpful to find access to the problematic research claims as well as the research and statistical sources that refute it. As a true old-school Liberal academic, it has been hard for me to discern what is true and what is fake data/news because the tendency for people on either side of Social Justice issues on KZread don't always provide viewers the ability to go see the resources they cite so that the audience can make up their own minds. But, I think, of all the channels I watch your's might be most open for something like this accommodation. I hope you will consider making it easier for your audience to have access to the facts we need to check. Again, I really support what you are doing and make this suggestion to make it perhaps even more successful. Best Wishes!
