Microaggressions: Fact vs. Myth | FACTUAL FEMINIST

Columbia University's Derald Wing Sue defines microaggressions as "brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to certain individuals because of their group membership". Yet research from Scott Lillienfeld says that the evidence for microaggressions is flimsy at best. Who's right? Factual Feminist Christina Hoff Sommers explains.

    I agree with you and the Factual Feminist. I had a co-worker one time (She tended to irritate everyone, even the other girls.) that complained, because I said hows everything going guys. She told me that shes not a guy. I responded in a annoyed tone okay, Hows everything going People. She almost starting yelling, because I only changed one word. I said in a angry sort of way that I am offended that you would be, so focused on finding offense that everything gets you mad. She complained to the other coworkers about that mean comment, but they hesitatingly agreed with me, even a nearby Female Manager. Turn about is still fair play, Right?

    @@robertlehnert4148 The Battle of Puebla was fought against Napoleon III. It was only noteworthy because a smaller group of Mexican irregulars defeated the much larger and better equipped and trained French army. She's right though - Cinco de Mayo is a historical footnote in Mexico, and is a bigger deal in the US. It is more a reason for Americans to party and drink tequila than it is a Mexican holiday. I don't think it's much celebrated outside of Puebla. I also remember reading (but could not find now, so can't verify it's true -- take with a grain of salt) that Napoleon III said something like "with three commanders like Zaragoza I could conquer the world". The French returned later with even more troops and eventually successfully took those positions. It was just one battle in a long war. But, technically, someone did hold Napoleon's Cognac -- he *was* the one who was defeated :)

    Believe it or not, I was sternly corrected for using a micro aggression when I referred to a US Supreme Court case that legalized gay marriage in all 50 states as "gay marriage". I was told that I should only refer to it as "equal rights marriage". I might add that I'm a transsexual and since I still only date women I'm now by definition a lesbian, yet somehow I don't know the proper language to describe myself. Same goes for "transgender" which according to the American Psychological Association is an umbrella term.

You make me believe that there are people, who don't use feminism to fulfill their goal to position themselves on a higher ground but rather just want to generate awareness. It is a shame that women like you are the least heard. But just by being yourself you contribute more to the feminist society than 20 women and men of the 'radical kind' Greetings from Europe (Germany)

    I have had like 50,000 "microagressions" in my life as a handicapped male, and it's all trivial stuff. i think everyone gets microagressions in one way or another. the only way to stop it would be cut out everyone's tongue and prevent communication by locking them in different rooms

  • @ariwl1

    @ariwl1

    Agreed. That's the real problem with microagressions: it puts people in a communication vice. The regular world does not talk like they do in academia. We use "colorful" language and tell dumb jokes. Being respectful is important, but not like this. If I met someone who was really insistent on calling out every little thing they thought was a valid microagression, I'd be avoiding them as much as I could because trying to talk to them would take way too much effort.

  • @alexhaupt2134

    Same problem with gay men. I was actually teased by (male) classmates in a variety of ways, and some of my friends told me they were treating me poorly, but I could tell those guys were just trying to understand something they didn't feel comfortable just asking about, and I became friends with them. Even if these so-called microaggressions really do point to bad assumptions, calling them out doesn't fix the problem; friendship does!

    Like, holy shit, I get that micro-aggressions can be annoying. Hell, I get tired to people asking 'where my family is from', but that's all it is. Annoying. It's not psychologically damaging, I'm not going to get PTSD from it. I'm not going to have to go to counselling and it's not diminishing my self worth. I, like I think most sane people, just go "oh, okay, that person is hella rude', and then go on with my day.

If you are from Wisconsin and you go to Texas, you will get asked if you are from Minnesota. If you don't have the energy for it, go back to where your family came from (and chances are, you will still get asked where you are from). This is the world. It happens _everywhere_. Not just the west, and not just with the broad brush of 'protected' groups as defined by the US government.

    I was just talking to my girlfriend about this. I ask people where they are from all the time because I am genuinely curious about other people and cultures, and actually very drawn to differences in life experience. Hell, half the women I have dated are not even from this country - I just find differences in experience interesting. I told her that it seems kind of sad to me that people may take my interest in them as some kind of an insult, and it's unfortunate that in knowing that, I may eventually just stop asking entirely, and depending on how sensitive people become to these things, at the most extreme end, though I love diversity in people, I can see becoming avoidant of even associating with people that are different than me. While I don't really anticipate THAT actually happening, I can see this type of culture actually leading to more and more segregation because people will get sick of walking on eggshells and will decide maybe it's just best to stick to their "own kind."

If everything we say can be offensive, and we try to avoid being offensive, we'll stop talking. Instead of suppression, we simply need to offer education. I love your explanation that it takes friendship and understanding. As we build these relationships over time, we gain better perspective--less tunnel vision and a bigger world view. We can fight through the ignorance.

    You have to admit though that taking a national celebration and turning it into a fucking drink fest is not ok either. It's like we took Memorial Day and made it a trivial celebration. People don't make much of Cinco de Mayo because we ultimately lost the war, but that Battle proved that we can do much if we prepare ourselves. Now a days not many people look back into History, though... BTW, what are your feelings on the Porfiriato? I know random question, sorry. XD

  • @AlbertoBurgos17

    @AlbertoBurgos17

    True, is not ok, altough my comment emphasizes two things: 1) That battle was important (therefore I agree with you) and 2) Here in México, that day we do not celebrate it as much as the Independence Day. The irony is that, in the United States, 5 de mayo is celebrated as if it had been Independence Day. Concerning the Porfiriato, I personally think that it was good for the progress of México, We grew a lot as a country at that time, unfortunately, Porfirio Díaz didn't know when to leave the power, If he had left the chair a few years earlier, maybe, he would not have been remembered as a dictator. True, he had many defects as a leader, but you can't catch all the water only with your hands. In general, Porfirio Díaz is not very well seen among Mexicans, but I suspect it is because he is being measured by current standards, not those of his time. I used the help of google translator in order to write all this, forgive me if some parts are brusque ;)

  • @watercolourferns

    i say your on the ball with this one. I get more bothered at people trying to take offense on behalf of a "marginalized group" when im often a member of one of those groups and i have to remind people that the individual matters and people are indivudals as well as groups- stuff like this devalues the individual with all this attempt and supposing of how a group is going to react. i hate to use this line every time, but as a black person, I want to hear black jokes, and i don't care how politically incorrect they are or racist some would say they are. ive been confused for a woman on the phone constantly, and i do not care- in fact it makes me laugh. "lived experiences of marginalized groups" my hide. trying to make things taboo will not help divides- though at this point i think many are pushing these divides for their own selfish reasons. the magic if Friendship is a better way then adding more eggshells to walk on.

    its rather annoying, especially since i was raised to treat people as individuals. i generalize like many others at times, but the pushing some recent "movements" do such BLM or elements of the current feminist waves push by groupings at the expensive of the individuals choice and then damage everyone in the made groups simultaneously. whatever "marginalized" group they seek to "protect" they infantilize and attempt to deny any possible wrongs they do, to say the least. simultaneously anyone deemed as "privileged" are made out to be evil, and gods forbid they try to get support for something that is hurting them, or do ANYTHING to draw attention away from the "marginalized". can't talk about male suicide rates within earshot of some of these folks without em trying to get something in edgewise, for example. its sickening. I'll tell you this, i never felt worse for having black skin than when BLM started making headlines. them and any other group trying to use black people for their own ends, and im stuck watching going "this is going to just make more problems." im seeing pushes of some groups in colleges to make seperate housing for the different racial groups and im just taken aback. slightly unrelated, but the confederate flag stuff that's been going on in the US bothers me as well- that people still let some piece of cloth from that far back affect their minds in so negative a way, to create such visceral responses to bring it down. History is grim, but it's like they've gone and imprisoned themselves to let it bother them to troubling extents. I personally had no issue. but what do i know, apparently im to "white" for some of these people.

    I had someone claim on behalf of another group, none of which were present, that I was being offensive. I asked what group they felt they came from. They asked why that mattered. I told them it was so I could make a truly offensive remark tailored specifically for them and then they'd be able to recognise the difference between a perceived, tangential offence and an actual, direct one. They left. Never concede anything to these imbeciles. Give them the verbal equivalent of a straight smack between the eyes. Who knows, maybe one day they'll metaphorically get knocked conscious.

    Thank you for posting these videos! I'm a woman and my male boss stopped to correct himself when he referred to me and my female coworkers as "you guys." I felt the need to point out that as far as I'm concerned "you guys" is a unisex term. It's a sad day when words have to be so carefully chosen. I have worked many physical labor jobs under the employment of men. From boatyards to farm hand and have experienced such a small amount of sexism that I feel we should be PROUD. It happens, but when it does I don't crumple to floor weeping because my feelings were hurt. I buckle down and work even harder just to prove that I'm capable. Should I need to prove that? Ideally, no more than any man needs to prove his capability. But change takes time and I'm thankful that I have the opportunity to work these jobs and alongside many fantastic male and female coworkers and bosses. The few true sexists I have encountered are only pushing the intelligent hardworking women towards other places of employment to the detriment of their own businesses.

    As a man of Mexican heritage I say any white person can cook and eat Mexican food while wearing a sombrero all day long. Zero microaggressions and zero fucks are given. I know a Caucasian man in his 80s who may not have the most "PC" opinion due to his upbringing and is a Republican but loves Mexico. To the left, he is a unicorn. I understand harsh upbringing. I also know that many Mexican men lack subtlety and have a very crass sense of humor. The irony is that much of the Mexican community in the US remains unaware of how regressive the left is getting. This community and much of the Mexican nation thrives on gay jokes, trans jokes, racist jokes and women jokes. The term "machismo" originates from that region so any feminist screaming "patriarchy" at the US should be looking at Mexico, Central America or many Arab nations if she wants to be taken seriously but NO because "brown people." According to the left then, my slightly darker complexion now gives me full freedom to be an asshole and commit crime in California but my inclination to judge all people by their character, including straight white men (what MLK Jr. preached), makes me a traitor and any semblance of a victim card is revoked. Microaggressions were the entire point of the Sticks and Stones colloquialism. No microaggression ever killed anyone nor will it cause PTSD for those who want to self-victimize even more.

    I think these people obsessed with microaggressions are basically bored, and haven't got particularly important lives. Dr. Sue just needed to publish a few more papers so he could get Tenure or something, and justify his existence as a quote unquote "social scientist" and be seen by other bored people looking for something to get outraged about. If any of these microaggression obsessed people were doing real work or creating value with their work in the world, they would be too busy and focussed on helping people and making change to have any time to get pissed off about the most trivial, victimhood seeking behaviours that have ever existed in human history. I live in Japan and get asked all the time: "Where are you from?" or "When will you go back to your own country?" It's annoying, but I have more important stuff to worry about than what strangers say to me. I tell them I'm from England, and that I love living in Japan and I'm not sure when I may want to leave. Getting offended is the most childish response to these questions.

    I worked at this one place (that shall remain nameless) a few years ago, they had us all go to the main conference room for a presentation... turns out they had a lawyer come in to talk to us about "being rude", and as that lawyer famously said during that presentation, "Being rude is not against the law", I started laughing as soon as he said that, my supervisor asked me to quiet down, some of my co-workers were looking at me with obvious disapproval, and I asked my supervisor " Is this really necessary?" and he said "apparently it is, so lets be quiet so this gentleman can finish his presentation", everyone there knew the entire thing was for ONE person in that room who kept complaining all the time about a co-worker's rudeness, which made the whole thing even more absurd to me.

    people ARE generally polite. That's what gives impoliteness its refreshing capital. Imagine what a boring world it would be if everyone were trying so hard not to offend each other and always moving the goal post for that offense farther and farther...

    You are exactly right! As a white man, I am in the target class for most of these complaints. It's getting ridiculous, and as men are driven out as the villain, the victim classes are establishing a hierarchy of who is allowed to attack who. Do women get to attack LGBTxxx or vise versa? Are African Americans allowed to be micro-aggressive to Latinos or the other way around? The system eventually eats its own. The real change will only come when everyone is forced to sit down, be quiet, and work on actually making sure everyone has equal treatment and opportunity. Like you say, this occurs through friendships and relationships, not through the current tribalism where one declares themselves part of an increasingly small "community" and only interacts with like minded people. Shutting down other's opinions and driving them out is indicative of how the segregated South acted, not an inclusive society. Finally, nobody has a right to live their entire life without getting offended! I get offended daily, but that's ok. People have the right to be offensive, and being able to tolerate, not like or affirm, that behavior is a big part of being a functioning adult. Living in a like-minded bubble leaves you an emotional child, never challenged and always affirmed in everything. That type of person is poorly prepared to live in the real world.

    Miss Hoff Sommers, I think you just became a new personal hero of mine. There’s self-depreciating humour, and there’s being willing to jump on a live grenade for the lulz; you swan-dived all over that Gelfling comment with the grace of a military paratrooper! (Subscribed, 100%.)
