World Cup pay gap: Here's why it's justified | FACTUAL FEMINIST

Critics are up in arms about the World Cup gender gap. The prize money for women is far less than for men. Commentators attribute the gap to sexism and structural inequities. Could they be right? Let’s review the evidence.

Partial Transcript:
This summer, the U.S. women’s soccer team electrified the nation when it defeated Germany 2-0 and then Japan 5-2 to win the World Cup. Instead of celebrating the team’s brilliant play and the continuing growth of women’s soccer, many in the media are fixating on what they see as a shameful “World Cup pay gap.” The U.S. women’s team collected only $2 million in prize money for its victory over Japan. But for the corresponding men’s competition in 2014, the winning German team won $35 million-while the Americans, who lost in the first round, took home $8 million. Spurred by the media reports, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont introduced a resolution on the floor of the U.S. Senate urging FIFA, the organization that sponsors the World Cup, to “immediately eliminate gender pay inequity”: Here is where I think the Senator and the media critics go wrong. The prize disparity has much more to do with sports economics than sexism. The World Cup is a world competition-hence its title-and its prizes are based on paid viewership, in stadiums but mainly on television, the world over. The women’s players are formidable athletes and the Women’s World Cup is growing rapidly in popularity, especially in the U.S., but it’s still nowhere near the men’s cup in terms of world popularity. According to FIFA, the 2011 Women’s World Cup was watched by nearly 408 million people around the world; for the men’s World Cup in, 2010 the figure was 3.2 billion. In 2010, the men’s World Cup generated nearly $3.7 billion in revenue, while the women’s World Cup generated about $73 million. FIFA is a shady organization, and sexism can probably be counted among its many vices-but the differences in its men’s and women’s prizes are actually less than the differences in its revenues from the two competitions. Well, the sports equity activists have heard all of this before, and they have a reply. “Why accept market forces?” they ask. After all, these forces were shaped by a culture that has been traditionally hostile to women. Shane Ferro, a feminist business reporter at Business Insider explains it this way: “Most of us have been socialized to accept men’s sports as dominant, and somehow automatically more interesting.” And once society internalizes a falsehood, she says, “it’s not so easy to correct it.” Hard, but not impossible. There is now a call by sports equity activists to change the market by re-socializing fans. “Sports fans, for the most part, will watch whatever you put in front of them,” says Kavitha Davidson at Bloomberg News. Highlight the women’s teams, and fan interest and excitement will come. A recently published study by two feminist sociologists [SHOW] comes to the same conclusion. The authors lament that women’s sports receive only about 3% of network TV attention, down from 5% in 1989. Major sports media, they say, is a “place set up by men for men to celebrate men’s sensational athletic accomplishments” while giving short shrift to women’s achievements. They acknowledge that there are fewer female teams, so they suggest for now the media increase coverage of women’s sports to 12-18%. They also specify that the sportscasters should report on women’s sports with the same “enthusiasm” as men’s sports. More coverage plus more enthusiasm will increase the fan base, and that will drive up women’s salaries and prizes. Well, it’s the gender sociologists and the feminist journalists-not the sports fans- who have internalized a falsehood. There are athletic competitions where women attract more fans than men-figure skating and gymnastics, for example. And women’s tennis, while not as popular as men’s, certainly has a large and devoted audience.

TheLawnWanderer When men get paid less than women, it is because of patriarchy, and when women get paid less than men, it is also patriarchy's fault. If men get paid less, it is because men viewed women as inferior, therefore they give out charity for the women. When women get paid less than men, it is because the society is man-ruled and it favored men over women. That's how patriarchy work... right?

As a HUGE football fan, I can say that most people have no fucking clue what they're talking about. I take offence to the whole "sports fans will watch whatever you put in front of them" because it simply isn't true. There are sports that I am not interested in, namely American sports, that would struggle to keep my attention. I can wholeheartedly say women's football SUCKS. The quality of the players, officials and managerial staff is incomparable to men. Just watching a men's football match and then a women's football match will show the gross differences between the skill and quality of the sexes. To say that women should be paid equal amounts for bringing in less interest and revenue is absurd. If this were a business, the employee that makes you the most money would get paid more. That isn't discriminatory, that's a reward for being a great asset to your business. Feminists find everything to call sexist and be angry about.

People will pay for productivity. and said nothing about wanting gender equality in sports. I could care less if women's sports existed or not. And I stated the fucking obvious reason that women's tennis generates large revenues and therefore get paid what they do. Here is a little fact of life good looking people make people feel good. At one engineering firm I worked at (so pretty much all men) the receptionist was a 10. She was pretty much there to look good. the bosses knew that seeing a hot women in the morning smiling at you put you in a good mood. I suspect if they lengthed women's tennis matches the gap in skill would get more pronounced and people would realise that those hot women aren't actually any good. mrebus i'm not projecting anything, i was merely pointing out that your justification for the equal pay is crap. this is how it looks: women get to have more money for less work and it's all good, but when women earn less for doing less, it's called a wage gap and everybody has their panties in a bunch. This is just forced equality of outcome, nothing more, nothing less, no matter how you justify it and with the debunked pay gap being spewed out over and over again, the womyn are crying for more forced equality of outcome. They already are getting quota's in boardrooms where their looking pretty will not have any effect on whatever revenue. It also undermines the women that did get there on merit, because they will be associated with a group that gets in based on a quota and not on merit. But hey, at least they got through the 'glass ceiling' by devaluating the efforts of women.

When offered a similar contract to what the men get (high bonus per win, lower per annum salary) the women's soccer team rejected it... 4. Men's soccer have a far bigger audience and bring in a lot more money, yet take a smaller percentage bonus cut than the females. Now that they are successful and realise that they could have made a lot more money on the other contract set up (that they declined), they want that re-instated instead. That's not how contract negotiations and risk vs reward works. To top it off, they are trying to construe the situation *they now find themselves in as a result of their own decision making* as some kind of male/female pay discrepancy, which is dishonest AF. It doesn't seem like you understand the situation here at all mate. You don't get to just alter and pick and choose what contract terms you want depending on what pays best at any given time. Thats unheard of in business. But they tried, and they tried to use "feminism" and associated guilt as a way to do just that, which is why I hate feminists. ***** 14 & 15 year old boys are probably still going through puberty at that point, so it would be quite presumptuous to assume that they were all physiologically grown men In terms of muscle mass, males don't completely "fill out" untill they're in their 20's. I'm not sure it necessarily even matters in a sport like football anyway, i mean how many players does Lionel Messi physically dominate over? There's also the issue that as players, the females have far more years of experience compared to the boys and should have a superior level of professional nous. No matter how you look at it, the fact is one of the best female teams in the world were soundly beaten by inexperienced adolescents....which frankly is a disgrace & the Aussie football federation or w/e they're called should be conducting an urgent review into the state of player development & coaching in the womens game..

Right. And why? Because, as the feminists' claim, it is a socially "internalized" injustice based on oppressive patriarchal power structures? No. Sports developed before written history as a natural way for boys to socialize themselves within the typical society, i.e., a society in which women have wombs, and men do not. As such, it was a way of displaying their sex's innate physical power (as opposed to that of women, certainly, but also with respect to one another) and to train their physical powers to be at their peak for the inevitable challenges of fighting animals and fighting in war. It is something which women and men understood, implicitly. Understood, that is, until the leftists - the Marxist deconstructionists set about their various tasks to destroy human society. They do this by attacking words, forcing inapt comparisons and false bases for arguments and mutilating language in general to the point where words only have the meaning they say they have and only then with every bit as much fickleness as suits their destructive work in the given moment - these diabolical misanthropes, these deeply self-absorbed and disturbed human haters. Even women, except those who are committed to the left's anti-human path, have no interest in women's sports. Women, are, when unmolested by modernist deconstructive brainwashing, interested in men and in choosing for their mate a male who suits their concepts of what an ideal mate would be. And what is the typical criterion? Well, of course, physical presence, strength, beauty, even in many cases, aggressiveness, especially a male aggressiveness which suits the prevailing societal structure. Women in the military and sports have not proven that "women can do anything men can do", interestingly. (And not at all surprisingly.) But just the opposite. The qualities associated with traditional masculinity only become more obvious and impossible to ignore in these venues.

Now if you took it on a lower level, like not at Olympics but Major League men's soccer and Major League female soccer there is more attendance at the male games than the female games. I'm sure women do not like to hear it, but all this is based off the biology of men and women. Since men are bigger stronger and faster the game is on another level. All I can say is try to do more marketing, buy more team apparel and maybe raise the ticket prices for women and see will people continue to buy it at the same rate that they once did before the change. An if that doesn't work, then I think you probably got your answer.

The whole video is being far too polite and diplomatic. Get down to earth on the topic. The entire "complaint" and issue about pay disparity between men and women's soccer/football, is moot. It is a NON-STARTER. Until such time the women's soccer/football is as fully supported by fans as the men's is .......there is no discussion. Fill the stadiums like the men's games do, ....EVERY AND ALL GAMES....and THEN there can be the beginnings of a conversation. For some reason, GOSSIP SOCIAL MEDIA NEWS can't seem to figure this out. The women complaining seems to be the only angle GOSSIP SOCIAL MEDIA NEWS seems to be able to handle. It is very easily searchable to find 14 and 16 year old boys very easily out-playing and out-scoring professional women's soccer teams. And there are the over--60 year-old men .....being able to do the same. FACTUALLY, in comparison with boys/men ....women are simply talentless. Women can only compete with themselves ....and it is completely up to FANS as to whether they want to support this game or not. Sadly, when there is a person like Rapinoe, who only has an opinionated mouth, supported by nothing ....it makes the whole conversation an embarrassment. She makes no sense and makes no points that are in fact correct. I heard her state once that women's soccer has built stadiums. Show us the supporting evidence of this and then show us women's games that are filling every one of these stadiums every time women's soccer games are played in these stadiums. .

Also, I watched a video once from a lawyer who broke down and explained the different deals the men’s and women’s soccer teams had signed. The men chose to have bigger payouts for championships at the expense of being paid less for regular season games (basically, a bigger bonus for winning but less salary), while the women chose the opposite: a higher salary per game that is guaranteed but less prize money for tournaments and championships. So the women CHOSE this!

There is a lot for women’s teams to do to become as watchable as a men’s game. I am sure the early days of men’s football was just as awkward to watch. In time I’m sure women’s will too but don’t expect to be paid the same until that is the case

Well remember that the NBA ( National Basketball Association ) has no rule excluding women from being able to play. It is just that in the rare cases a female athlete is invited for a practice or recruitment they just don’t make the team. There have been a couple women who most likely could have made a NBA team but instead they decided to play WNBA only to try to attract attention to it and well I don’t remember their names so see how well that went.

For some reason quick decision making and reading of the game is completely different when it comes to men and women. In second year university I had a class called "Media and Images of Inequality" and one day the prof argued this very same thing - the idea that women's sports are significantly under-broadcasted and that the gender pay gap in sports is unjustified - and when I raised my hand and brought up this argument, specifically that people like to watch men's sports because men are bigger, stronger and faster than woman and people like to see sports played by the best. The big media conglomerates know this, and by virtue of being a media conglomerate, they know they will make more money in advertising revenue in men's sports simply because of the fact that they know there are more eyes on the screen. Also what tends to get ignored in the sphere of sports is Ronda Rousey. She is the highest paid fighter out of everyone (including men) in the UFC; and why? Because advertisers know that when Ronda is fighting, there are more eyes on the screen than any other fighter. The UFC pays Ronda based on the merit of her work, as does every other sports company that pays every other athlete. The whole class looked at me like I was a fucking terrorist.

  • @Luisofbrazil

    @Luisofbrazil

So, 7% from $6B? That would be $420 million and then would be distributed for all 736 players that participated in that event. In total, each player earned $570.652,00. With the Women's World Cup, it's going to be $32.7 million. Now we need to know how many women will participate in order to figure out how much each will earn, which is definitely less. But then again, it doesn't gross as much as the Men's World Cup, so it's no surprise that the amount of money they earn is less compared to what player's in the Men's get.

@Nickel Mgtow Well, I'm making a calculation based on equal distribution. Even if it isn't like that, it's just to have an idea. Now that you mentioned how many players are in the women's world cup, it would be $32.7 million for all 552 players. In total, each player would get $59.329,71. Therefore, it less than what man are earning with the world cup, but that is based on popularity and investment. Of course that there are getting more popular, but it will take some time to reach that point.

not sure why you undermine those little boys. Those guys started very early at like 5-6 and trained really hard, they are physically already close to major league athletes. Women are simply physically weaker and it is socially less acceptable for women to do those kinds of sports so competition is even worse.

Xitrin Lol what a white knight. Professional women also started at early age. 13/14 years old boys are not stronger than adult women, there is no testosterone involved either. Physically they're kids, no muscles at all, you can watch snippets of australian women's team loosing to kids, women were stronger and could easilly push kids, but still lost 0:6, cause of being really bad at the game.

norbidrake 13-14 is when they start growing and testosterone is actually involved. All I was saying is that people tend to overlook that those boys are not some random dudes, they train hard. White knight part made me cringe, labels everywhere.

Xitrin Lol they're kids from some random, local academy vs. the best senior, women in a entire country. Kids don't train that hard, they're not even professionals yet. My comment made you cringe, now you know how other people feel when they read non logical, SJW bs, all over internet. I mean, I watch football sometimes with women, they watch men's football, not women's fotball because it's shite. Pretending it's equal, or difference is only in strenght is crazy. There were many matches where senior women's teams were beaten by u-15 boys, that's when SJW nonsense is verified by reality.

Hello to you all. In 2016 I founded a soccer league in Monterrey Mexico that only had two rules. 1. All players must be architects. 2. A minimum of 2 woman playing in the field. It turned out to be a great success. Other leagues were beginning to copy the second rule. But as you might imagine it had a lot of criticism at first. It had all types of bad comments, for example, some guys thought it was a disadvantage of strength. To which I replied that it's not because rules apply to every team, and it will steal be very competitive because there is plenty of talented players. Other attack I received was from feminist saying that is sexist and not fear to have a minimum 2 woman. To this I explained that it may be a bit sexist but its to the benefit the participation of woman. I was seeing plenty of girls in the bench that could be having fun in the field instead. And if you do the math the rule alllows for an all woman team and not a 100% guy team, think about it. But as a lot of swjs are in these times, like a global pandemic, they don't bother to understand the logic. Anyway, we would be in the 13th edition if it weren't for covid19. Which by the way is a real problem to address instead of destroying heritage monuments on March 8th because they were built by men, this is a thing in Mexico and authorities cannot do anything about it but to clean up the mess the next day, look it up in any news source. Anyway, take take yourselfs and each other no matter which organs you may have.

This notion of turning women's football, or any women's sport, into a viable, market forces obeying proposition is only possible in the US - who, in terms of FIA revenues, are significant but not be all and end all contributors. If the US wants to keep sponsoring it's prime postion in the Women World Cup, then it needs to bridge the perceived gap itself. Fifa shouldn't have to subsidize a less profitable proposition at the expense of the ongoing development of its main business.

Thank goodness for a rational, unemotional and fair analysis of the reasons for pay disparity. I remember a few years back that sports analysts forecast that female marathon runners would soon catch up the men because they had greater stamina and ability to suppress pain. While supreme females are now running as fast as 2 hours 14 minutes, the men have broken the 2 hour barrier. That’s around a 3-4 kilometre gap over 42 kilometres, almost 10% gap. I love watching women’s sports but given the choice of a female or male soccer or rugby match, or the men’s versus women’s sprints at an athletics meet, I will watch the men’s game every time. As for tennis, how can anyone compare any of the recent female number 1 seeds games against Nadal, Djokovic or Federer’s performances? I admire their skills, passion and determination but sorry, girls. The boys are just better at most sports. Should all blue collar professionals be paid the same if there are performance gaps between individuals? Pay for mediocrity or excellence? Communism or capitalism?

Hi, Sven! No, he was DEFINITELY right. I'm a 6.0 (which is Serena's level... maybe a little higher), and let me tell you, the D1 college players I hit with would beat her, and they're ranked outside of the top 1000. She maaayyy pick up a match, here and there, but the rankings are about CONSISTENCY, not SKILL, and she wouldn't be able to streak enough wins to get her ranking up.

The idea that these organizations would lose out on theoretical hundreds of millions in revenue just to "keep women down" shows some women have a fundamental misunderstanding of the world and what drives it.
