DnD Player Has MELTDOWN Over Not Getting Spotlight | r/rpghorrorstories
In today's episode of RPG Horror Stories with DnD Doge, we have a tale about a player that makes an overly complicated character and has a meltdown when trying to steal the spotlight. A story about a dungeon master that requests in depth backstories but never uses them, and a story about a dungeons and dragons community getting shut down.

I kinda want the "I have five characters' worth of backstory" player to get together with the "I completely ignore your backstory" DM, just to see what would happen. ;-) Feel better soon, Doge!

All hell would break loose if that happens... But I would just sit back and watch the chaos
For the Backstory DM: I can kinda see DM not being malicious and probably needs to write down some notes or a cheat sheet or pull back his ambition and asks for backstories with dless depth. And good to hear your health is on the upturn, Doge. Hang in there!
Hope Doge is back up to good health before too long. I've suggested this a few times before, but it's been a while since I mentioned it; it could be fun to see Doge dressed up as an Aralez for Halloween and Christmas.

@@Nesseight The Aralez is more like a Reverse Hellhound. In Armenian mythology, the Aralez is a magical winged doggo that descends from the heavens to revive fallen heroes by licking their wounds. Honestly, I'm a little disappointed D&D, Pathfinder, and similar games haven't made use of it yet. They're pretty obscure on the world stage.

I recently created a wizard that I plan to build into a necromancer. The kicker is, she happens to be a succubus as well, with all the skills and abilities that entails except that I nerfed her Charisma a bit. I decided that for her backstory her sex demon parents were disappointed that she wanted to learn wizardry instead of doing sex demon stuff. I mean, she does do those things, like maybe once every couple of weeks, but mostly just to make sure she doesn’t lose the use of her innate abilities. I’ve got her working as a librarian in a library that specializes in dark magic, because she wants to be a necromancer. I’ve also got a drow tempest cleric of Poseidon who ran away from home as a child at the age of 84 and lived in a temple dedicated to the Greek gods until he was 270. He also has a trident that he uses as his holy symbol for casting his cleric spells, and it’s the only thing he uses the trident for as it’s supposed to be blessed replica of Poseidon’s own trident

A backstory should be a framework the DM can work with Just handing in your fan fiction doesn't do anyone any favors. Everything that matters happens at the table Also you always want to be capable of making a new character If your that attached to a character and need them to go through their narrative ... Your playing the wrong game 😅 There are tabletop roleplaying games with that mindset in mind but inherently That's not D&D
Thanks Doge for another great video. Regarding the last story, that store owner likely isn't going to last long if they can't communicate well. Game stores require loyal patrons, and that's gained by being open and honest. If nothing else, the DMs could probably switch to the library for a while, since most libraries have meeting rooms.
Not the store I worked in that's in the story. But the comic/game store I worked in also ended D&D nights. The reasons were 1 groups kept getting NSFW despite being talked to almost weekly about this. We were the only comic shop in the area with a kids section and so we got lots of little ears coming in. 2 groups wouldn't wrap it up when given closing time warnings and employees were stuck there hrs after closing. Even had to threaten to call the cops once when it was reaching 3hrs past. 3 These groups never brought their own books and just take them off the shelves and leave us with unsaleable damaged products. 4 They never bought any thing. Even got upset with us when we wouldn't allow them to just open mini packages for the current game without purchase. This was 6 or 7 years back, but as a 30+ year forever DM myself. I fully backed the store owners. These people were horrible and I'll probably start adding my own stories soon.
The "wants complicated backstories, doesn't use them" guy sounds exactly like me... except I don't require complicated backstories from my players, it's just that when they do write it I end up inevitably losing notes or failing to connect anything from their backstories with what's happening in the campaign. In my months-long campaign, I only managed to include a backstory element ONCE in a way that I found satisfying.
Remember Doge, the vet is there to help. I hope you don't need the cone of shame!
I had a DM once who made US all write backstories. Those backstories never had an Impact on the game. When WE asked him why he made us write those stories, he said it was for ourselves to know our characters a lot better and learn to think and feel like them. That's a fair point! We then asked him to incorporate parts of our backstories into the game. He promised to look for opportunities within the story. Even tough it took him a while, he finally did what he promised to us. Sometimes you just have to have an honest and adult conversation.
It sounds like that store owner just didn't want D&D Night to continue and came up with some flimsy excuses for why. The real reason probably has something to do with the negative stigma surrounding it, like the old Satanic Panic stuff, or how people tend to think it's a hobby for nerds and kids, and he wants to serve a different clientele. Something similar happened to the local gaming place where I live: they stopped hosting gaming groups and turned the place into a trendy bar. We should have seen it coming when they started serving drinks named after the Eeveelutions despite most people that frequent the place ordering soda and brownies. By the way, my family just adopted two kittens. Any advice as someone who owns his own clowder? Also, one person is shooting down all pair names (like Link and Zelda) because pair names aren't "original", and that's apparently bad. This same person also wants to name them after politicians or singers they like, some of which I don't like. What should I do?
Yay. Glad the health issues are starting to resolve enough for you to look at slowly coming back up to a fully kitty powered Doge.
Glad to see you're recovering, Doge, and hope you'll quickly get back into the swing of things. As for Lenny, he just smacks of Main Character Syndrome, which is probably why he got snippy when the other players started joking about it.
Final Story: The A/C is a somewhat legitimate excuse. I suspect that the D&D sessions are targeted because of either the previous creep or a parent of one of the kids threatening legal action very after the fact, or worse, especially if the creep has a restraining order and still tries to show up. With the obnoxious kids, I can see the entitled parents using the game store as a daycare and then filing a lawsuit for "Discrimination" when they got removed for unruly behavior. Bonus points if one of the parents are in the actual legal profession... That said, I'm always glad to see a Doge Post after hearing about recent medical issues.
Hello Lucky. Story 1: Da heck, dude? Story 2: As a new DM; this is infuriating. Story 3: Wow. What the heck??
Parkour had absolutely no reason to apologize. Lenny was acting like a bratty child. If you can't talk to a person like they're your equal then you can't game with them. Story 2 DM is only asking for back-stories to catch the players cheating to get off the railroad.
Oh thank doge, I was bored out of my mind waiting around for some guys to work on our pump!
I am a DM who struggles with complex backstories. It’s not that I don’t want to incorporate them. It’s just when a player gives me a full family tree and a timeline of specific events that I struggle to remember all the details.

Pathfinder AND Mutants & Masterminds!? Sounds like a group after my own heart!
All I can think of for the first story is Lenny wanted to play Roger Smith from American Dad.
Lucky is such a good kitten, taking care of Doge.
I said this on another video covering Mr All-Backgrounds: Let him have them all. Then because of the huge cost for all those backgrounds don't give him the ability to develop powers. After all when would he possibly have time while juggling all those responsibilities!
I feel the backstories group are well within their rights to say they won't keep writing these backstories because it is egregiously bad to *require* them and not use them. Not all GMs want to incorporate backstories and some games, esp official modules etc, don't always call for it or even make it that feasible without a fair bit of tinkering, so fair enough not using them. That said, if you expect players to put in the effort, you should do the same. I mean, heck, these players are doing worldbuilding for you! ETA: Yes, it's true that we can all forget stuff but if you know you're likely to forget, stop asking them to provide something you know you'll likely forget to use.
Had a similar experience to the last one. It turned out we lost the venue because the couple who owned it had a messy break-up.

Oof
I've had backstories that have character specific details, only to never have any of it come up Or worse, it all comes up all at once
Story #1 - Yeah, there was just no way Lenny was going to work. Booting him early on sounds like the exact right move. Story #2 - A Referee not remembering everything character-related can be understandable. That's why good Referees make notes beforehand. This guy needs to start making some changes - the group needs to have a SERIOUS talk about it. Story #3 - "Wanted structure?" What does that even mean?
@BlueTressym

By 'structure', he probably meant 'more money'.
Lucky is my favorite bard Edit: Regarding the first story, honestly the concept MIGHT have been salvageable if they took a MoonKnight style approach with DID and having multiple personalities. Buuut it doesn’t seem like the problem player didn’t want that.
@unluckyone1655

I was about to say, that was basically Moon Knight. The character could be fun to play, just add insanity, and the risk of another personality taking over at inconvenient times. But looks like Lenny... didn't want that
Okay, the last story is a display of a lack of responsibility and communication. You don't just do that out of the blue. And remember Doge, your well being comes first above all other things.
Didn't know about the health issues, sending you much love and well wishes that you recover swiftly and it doesn't disturb you any longer!

The backstory thing happens. Some Dms get overzealous and hyped and forget sometimes. For the last story it sounds like someone smells and is stinking up the join😂
I hope your health improves. Beleive me, I know it can be very frustrating dealing with health problems and everything that comes with that territory, I really hope your health improves quickly. The backstory thing really does sound like he may just be forgetting, I know I have trouble remembering backstory details myself as a GM, and it can be especially tricky if you aren't used to doing it and have the kind of complex stories it sounds like that guy was running.

Dude needs a crib sheet
Sounds like the DM from story 2 is just kinda absent minded/ scatterbrained, and they have trouble keeping all the moving parts organized. That being said, if you're like this, then why request such long and indepth PC backstories? As with every story, a little self-awareness goes a long way. PS: Glad you're on the road to recovery, Doge. We're all rooting for you.
Forcing players to bring a backstory is fine IF you plan to use it. It makes sure the palyers are invested in their characters and is great for building the world and even raising the stakes when needed. That said, making them do all that extra work with 0 pay-off, especially when you are so blatant about not reading those backstories, is just disrespectful to everyone's time and is a sure-fire way to take them out of the game and break immersion. I always write my character's backstory as a bit of a blob. Amorphous but with enough substance that you can pick out the shapes if you want to. I appreciate it because it's a little less work required if I need to do it on short notice, and it allows me to be versitile with the details when it's convienet. My GM appreciates it because he can throw in a McGuffin when he needs to without making it feel completely shoe-horned in. Often by relating it to my character in some way, and thus giving the party a reason to take the person/object with them without breaking immersion. I've accidently become the pivitol piece in a few different plot points because the GM needed a way to give us a thing, and my backstory was the easiest way to do it.
Hope you are feeling well soon Doge. Love your work.
im back ive missed this channel while ive been binging reddit videos the last while hope you have been doing well overall
You should almost never shame a DM for being "mediocre" they are putting in time to make it happen. Whether it's a blockbuster or not you should be grateful imo.
Get better soon, Doge! I'll wait no matter how long you need, love your videos
Meanwhile, my player's backstory be like "he is summoned into being by the hope of children." if the players don't interact with it, why are you spending time on it?
I really hope you feel better Doge!
Yeah, that store owner ending DND night... That's just landlord doing landlord stuff. Probably had another offer for that space or plans on fixing it up to market it for more money to reserve. You would wonder why it was so abrupt and why he didn't offer the group the opportunity to reserve that space...? Landlord doing landlord stuff, unfortunately.
Spotlight hogging always causes hard feelings in games. In that first story, IMO the only person who owed any apologies was the guy who threw a hissy fit after getting called out for jumping in on what was clearly another player character's opportunity to shine. That second story... I don't really get the need for a long back story. Maybe if you're playing in a higher level game? If you're starting at level one, then your character really should not have done a lot yet. IMO they should have some people who might be important to them, some explanation for why they are who they are, and something they want. Most of the really good DMs I've played with want one page MAXIMUM. We're not writing novels; we're supposed to just be establishing a beginning. I don't get why you'd have to completely shut down D&D nights to fix the AC. Wouldn't that just mean a temporary hiaitus? I really hope your health is improving, Doge, whatever you're dealing with.
Whatever medical issues you're dealing with, I hope you don't feel that your videos are more important than yourself. We all love you 💞
Love your vids, doge!
Good day Doge and Lucky!
M&M is a complicated game, and that's before including any powers And the powers The bread and butter of any superhero game The meat and potatoes of Supermen Basic vague descriptions of what they're supposed to do, and not much else The more complicated ones are essentially encouraging homebrew shenanigans, and really, REALLY break the game
Get well soon, Doge. All the best.

A meltdown is not something can people can control. You can not decide to just have a meltdown anymore than decide not to have one. And it takes days or weeks to recover from, with explains why the player could not apologize for a meltdown right away.

Indeed, that is the difference between a tantrum (a fit thrown when one does not get their own way) and a meltdown (an involuntary process resulting from genuine stress, over-stimulation, ect and doesn't always result in yelling and screaming, sometimes it can also be as tame as curling up into a position and ignoring everyone. I.E., Chris-Chan at TooManyGames). OP probably did not know this when it comes to the difference between one and the other and said meltdown for the Indiana Jones reference in the assumption they're the same thing. What Lenny did is a tantrum.
