DnD Player FREAKS OUT After Taking Damage | r/rpghorrorstories

Ойын-сауық

In today's episode of Cringe RPG Horror Stories with DnD Doge, we have a tale about a player that thinks they shouldn't get hit, and totally freaks out when he does. A story about a player that targets another for reasons. And a tale about a Dungeon Master that leads the players on, making it that rolls don't matter.

In that second story, it doesn't sound like OP really talked about the issue with anyone. The DM and the other players may not have had a clue that anything was wrong. Communication is key, people.

2nd story I can relate. I joined this forum called "BleachAnime" where you could roleplay in the soul society on a forum and I enjoyed it for a long while. I even got promoted to 3rd rank in the 11th Division (which was just under the 2nd in command for events and stuff) and my role was to recruit people. So I did my best to handle it and it went well. However some recruit weren't getting responses from the leader (the one who authorises it) and the 2nd in command was away ill; so I contacted her about it. She said "I'll sort it out" and did nothing. Weeks went by to the point ppl just gave up, so I contacted them in voice chat, since they couldn't get away to brushing me off. They told me to stop telling them about it (it was the 3rd time in 2-3 weeks btw and they were spaced out because I understood she might be busy), she told me and I quote "stop harrassing me about it, you keep telling me and I don't care", which was weird; I explained it was only the 3rd time and she kicked me from the call. I explained it to the rest and apparently she made up a story about how I was telling her 6 times. I offered to show them the messages I sent and he replies but they didn't care; everyone had just decided I was the problem and the few friends I still had stated this all sounded suspicious; especially one who left on holiday and just returned. So next voice call I told her, "I can't manage the recruits if you're not going to reply. If you have a problem with me fine, but don't hold it to them; I can leave if you want." She stated sarcastically that "You wouldn't leave" so I did. Explained the situation and told everyone about it and left. Like that all the toxicity left and those 3 told me that when I left she freaked out; lashing at everyone and doing some strange stuff. About 4-6 years later I was contacted by an ex-member to talk about the past and I explained the situation and why I left. Turns out the lady who was running it spreaded lies about me while I was gone; up until the site closed. *TLDR* : I could of handled the situation better but refusing to talk and spreading lies to make be the bad guy to the entire site and then continued to lie about it while I was gone was definitely something. It was my first step into any kind of Roleplaying, even if isn't just a forum and not a DnD game; but still, I can relate; even if by a bit.

With the story about the OP with severe anxiety, since nobody stood up for them it kind of sounds like the other players were secretly also feeling that way about OP but didn't want to be the one to say anything. Not in the sense that OP was secretly the That Guy, more that the others had gotten tired of accommodating them but didn't want to be mean. Tinfoil hat time, that might be why the DM brought in the new player.

It was that PM that made OP quit and the party most likely think it was the yelling that Cat Girl was talked to about already that made them not want to play. OP didn't seem to explain about the PM.

That monk is so opposite to my own astral monk with ADHD. In our campaign I explicitly made it clear my monk was going to start with a sort of untouchable-teenager vibe and communicated with the DM that I wanted him to go through a All Quiet On the Western Front style experience about the harsh realities of life in the pretty lethal campaign setting we're in. Literally 30 minutes after us leaving the dwarven kingdom we started in I had him stance up in front of some giant rats and cracked one upside the head for a nat 20 and while he was cheering knocking this creature out in a home run swing with his club got swarmed by the other two rats and incapacitated by turn 2. I found this hilarious and totally what I was after. Same thing happened with him discovering ice for the first time (ice mephit). He's learned to be more careful and becoming slightly paranoid, but also protective of his companions.

Heh - the first story reminds me of an old teammate of mine: he was playing an elven ranger - he even got an Elven Windblade (a monster of a weapon that crits almost constantly, despite not being magic). Problem is, it was D&D 3.0. He got struck ONCE. He grabbed a bow, scuttled to the back of the team and never left that position ever again. And I mean EVER. Seriously, no matter how many times we played D&D, Pathfinder, Everquest RPG (a D20 third party game), whatever else, he ALWAYS made an elven ranged attacker. Even when playing the only healer of the team - a bard. He simply couldn't stand the idea of his awesome character getting hit. Weird thing is, he DID get hit constantly because he couldn't get rid of that damn bow even once... In a D&D 3.5 session, he was leading a team of dwarves to ambush an enemy troop. The dwarves were wielding heavy crossbows, he had his usual goddam bow and refused to take a crossbow. So, when they got into position, they readied their weapons... and he STOOD UP TO FIRE. Cue all the duergar crossbowmen in the enemy troop firing at him. "Why are they only firing at me?" ...I don't know, maybe because you're the only idiot standing up in clear view while the rest of the team is lying down and firing their crossbows while prone?

I remember my very first DnD session, which was about two months ago. I had a Leonin fighter and it was my session 0 where i was being introduced to everyone. We were all level 1, so default HP. In that session, there was an angry drunk, we all tried to get him to clam down. He attacked in a fit of drunk rage. DM showed us his roll, it was in Foundry, nat 20 and I'm making death saves. Want to know how i took it, "damn," and started rolling death saves till i was healed. Then we all moved on. If i can do that in my first character, first DnD campaign, and first session, then their is no excuse to overreact to 4 damage when you have 41 health.

I'd want more info about the second situation before making a call on who's mostly right or wrong. If the player had so much social anxiety that they complained a lot or often weren't helpful when they should have been, that would set a lot of people off and could be seen as being manipulative. Did the new player agree to treat that anxious person with kid gloves and just decide not to? The fact that the new person was getting mad at the anxious person for no apparent reason makes me think there might actually BE a reason, given the rest that the anxious person admits to. And, some people have no patience or empathy if another person is taking the fun out of it for them. Yelling at the anxious person and telling them off in a text was wrong, period, but was the anxious person using their anxiety as an excuse to get their own way or for failing to do their part? I'd want to hear from another player before deciding. This story seems to have a lot that's not being said.

Yeah kinda agree here, I can imagine how i'd feel dealing with another player slowing things down heavily if they were 'zoning' out as much as the op claims. I understand that they were going through a lot, but dropping sleep deprivation on top of it will only make things worse, make your sensitivity even higher and make you much more prone to emotional attacks. I'd like to hear from another POV on this one before making a decision on who was in the wrong. It could even be that they even exaggerated the happenings because they were sleep deprived and don't remember things clearly.

OP in story 2 was clearly going through a tough time - and that might explain why they were willing to play at such crazy hours of the day, in order to stay in contact with others. But if you have that kind of serious anxiety and a lot going on in your life, it can’t have helped to also be going through such a terrible sleep schedule. I feel sorry for them but I hope they can find a more healthy way to play and are able to work through what life is throwing their way.

Because, well, it's RP story writing and the RPing and not a mechanics RP or win lose type game where dying is potentially a thing. But apparently this person doesn't RP. So, no damage mechanics and no RP? What are they in the game for? Then again maybe they did do story writing RPs and have rushed through the options because frankly It's impossible to do a story RP with Edgey McEdgelord characters.

The OP claims they were always accommodating towards them, so it's suspicious such friends wouldn't have said anything if someone was just blowing up at them. Having experience with anxiety and sleep deprivation and how that effects you, it's likely the "screaming" wasn't exactly screaming, and that there are details either forgotten or intentionally left out. I'd lean towards forgotten because the OP mentioned they weren't sure how much of it was on them. Which I find likely because if they were sleep deprived their memory wouldn't be that clear.

A lot of people here are claiming that OP probably was/must have been a problem player because people didn't stand up for her. That is simply untrue and ignorant at best; people are frequently awful to people with mental health problems and it's disingenuous to pretend otherwise. I'll grant that some of that is through a lack of understanding but just as much of it is from a lack of empathy. Yelling at someone for no reason would be wrong no matter who you did it to; picking on someone you know has issues with anxiety is flat-out bullying. It's especially egregious as Rogue almost immediately proved herself to have no valid reason for the yelling; if the issue was with the behaviour, she would've been just as angry with the other person who did the same thing. There's also no suggestion that OP wasn't contributing, considering she was apparently having fun with her goliath barb. Rogue is an arsehole and the alleged friends who did not stand up for her when Rogue was being an arsehole and IF they had any problems with the anxiety affecting the game, didn't have the common decency to have a talk with OP about whether or not there was a way to mitigate it, are not much better. As for whether OP should've quit the game before Rogue drove her out, she says she was enjoying it despite the anxiety, so why should she? The only thing I feel it's a shame she didn't get to do is tell the GM and others why she was leaving. Still, given their failure to tell Rogue to shove it when she was bullying OP, I'm not surprised; OP had no reason to feel they'd understand or care at that point. People really, really need to understand that they are basically saying she should never do anything with other people because it causes anxiety. I have physical disabilities (as well as severe clinical anxiety) and when I was still larping, people would often ask me when I mentioned feeling rough if I should wait to larp until I felt better. I told them that if I did that, I'd never get to play. I am never going to be in a condition where I'm free of health problems, so I can't wait until that non-existent day comes to do things. OP can't just not do anything that causes her anxiety because you can't have any sort of life if you do that. It's frustrating that people claim they shouldn't have to accommodate people with health issues but also demand that said people 'suck it up' and stop 'letting' their condition stop them from doing things. Well? Which is it? Caring for others' needs and helping them, especially when they are trying hard to manage their difficulties, is called being a decent human being. Any of us can find ourselves needing help at any time. No one is immune.

Honestly I have had a character of mine die from a single punch. 1st level fighter back in AD&D with 5 hit points total... running for his life from an Ogre he had killed... just wasn't dead yet. Really ticked off. But not dead yet. My character died right before the ogre did.

2nd One sounds bit off. They should have left a message for DM to play their rude bits better. That one player who joined in the middle of the game acting like it's their game got off bit too easy. As if they are the only one with problems. Still I know that I'm not only one with problems. I mean I know people who say the first line, but then actually forget its meaning, when they've wiped someone out with it. 3rd one sounds... Uhm... Something... Impossible... No one can be regular dm and then fail from the very roots of the game. If they kept failing every time..? How did you stand to play those games? Sounds like no space for moves were in it. That can't be real. That's like story nights for kids, and they give out ideas or characters what the storyteller should use, and they just listen. That's just like some TV shows for kids where some lovely lady is with kids and some people with bearsuits dancing along the music if there is one.

Idk I get anxiety is a thing, but it sounds like op trauma dumps, meta games, and doesn't pay attention. That shit would be annoying. Like I get it they're tired but they decide to play in that game, not paying attention is a dick move. And if every time op is asked about how they are they responded with bad stuff it, which it sounds like they did pretty often, that would get old and exhausting

The "Antagonistic Player" story is usually told from the other side. You know the formula. OP says a player does a bad thing and never gets the hint, no matter how hard he rolls his eyes. Then OP yells at the player and is surprised he gets defensive.

3rd story.... There was a 5% chance he was awake. Meaning a 95% chance he was sleeping. He's a king right? Why wouldn't he have some kind of intruder alarm set. An besides how often do you people wake up randomly at night? It happens to anyone. The only problem was the seeing through invisibility. Without more information I can't comment more. It's part of the game. These things happen.. 2 hours of planning or 2 weeks of planning. Things happen.

Less rolling is actually a good thing. Act it out and roleplay, the dice shouldn't be doing everything for you. That's how the game was long played. Nor should you treat your character sheet as the prison it has become. Think outside of it and move beyond your abilities.
