The Brony story is no different than trying to play a casual Star Wars game, and an obsessive SW fan keeps getting upset that you used the wrong planet or made a Jedi out of character. The OP is right that it's the same as someone who's already memorized Forgotten Realms lore, and won't let you deviate. And most Bronies wouldn't care, and just appreciate the effort, even for a joke. Every fandom has its obsessive members.

i mean depends , for example as i SW fan if you game takes place in Nar Shadaa but you use it as is Naboo i am going to be somath piss of cos i was expecting Nar Shadaa (Las Vegas but x 1000 and with a looooot of crime) not Naboo, as for the Jedi part wellll i would be ok with that, but with locations....yeah

"having fun" as a DM is not killing your party, it's telling a good story and seeing your players enjoying the campaign and liking your NPCs.

Yep. If that guy has so much fun killing the PCs, perhaps OP, as the new DM, should have a "dream sequence," where he repeatedly "kills" that one player's characters. Including making NEW characters (taking a pause at the table, while he creates a new one), and then picking up where they left off, hand-waving in the new character, just like that dwarven mage on Viva La Dirt League, with his oodles of identical brothers. Kill him, over and over, and point and laugh EVERY TIME and say how much FUN it is to kill the PCs. But... ONLY his. Make it plain you are gunning ONLY for him. At the end of the session, say, "You wake up from the dream, wondering what that was all about, and nervous about the day ahead. Take disadvantage on your attack rolls all day." Then, end the session, and see if he 'forgets" about his disadvantage in the next session. If he complains to you, just tell him, "Well, just like you, I wanted to have some fun by destroying my players' hard work in creating good characters, to which they are attached. It's totally fair, right? Besides, what have YOU got to complain about? YOURS was just a dream." "But, you gave me disadvantage on all attack rolls for the whole next day!" "Yes, I did. And maybe that means you'll die again. But that's FUN, right?!" If he argues anymore, say, "You know, I COULD make that permanent. After all, YOU SAID that the DM has FUN by killing off the PCs. YOU said that, and I'm just following YOUR lead." "But, you targeted me. Just me! You didn't even attack any of the other PCs!" "True. But then again, THEY never ganked a combat encounter specifically to kill us all, did they?" Eventually, you can let it go, if he apologizes. If he doesn't, just agree, with the group, that he will NEVER DM for you again. He's still OK as a PLAYER, right?

Different styles for different groups, I'd say. The live hard, die harder GM v Party playstyle is very much a valid way of playing that's older than DnD itself. If the group's dynamic is "Curse of Strahd but deadlierer and rocks fall", that's their fun. If their dynamic is "Avalon: The Legend Lives, but five dudes crowded around a table", I question their sanity as I'm drowning in all their lore, but that's their fun.

I've been a DM for over 25 years, and one thing I have seen for certain-- my players over the years have fondly retold the campaign stories I ran that allowed them to earn their victory as heroes of their realm, and rarely did they speak of the campaigns that ended with the party TPK'd because I wanted it that way. And when they talk about the fondly remembered campaigns, they always point out that I was a great DM that made that campaign fun for them. That's how you really win as a DM-- when your players spread praises of you like bards. ^_^

Wil Wheaton is now sending his used dice out into the world, to appear at random tables. Seriously, I thought it was a joke, until I watched him play on Critical Role, and saw. For real, that guy is CURSED. One time, the party was nervous about an upcoming fight, so they snuck him into the set, and had him touch ALL the DM's dice. They had an amazingly fun session, laughing as they passed every contested check, and said, "Nope. My AC is higher than that" for every attack. It was hilarious. Seriously, though, "Wil Wheaton gave me these dice" is a running joke in the D&D community. But, usually you KNOW, and roll them, anyway. The mystery dice are mysterious.

The MLP one is one I can understand the problem player on. When I know the lore, it's painful to hear someone get it wrong, particularly major canon stuff rather than just some commonly accepted fanon or something. As I've gotten older, I have gotten better about not letting my lore...um...lore lawyering? get in the way of a good time, though I would double check with the DM in this situation if the errors are mistakes on his part or clues for the mystery, because the sheriff being in the wrong kingdom could be a clue that something's not right. On the flip side of this, this is also why I'm reluctant to use other's characters for anything because I'm terrified of getting the character wrong (and by extension is why I've never written fanfics, no matter how much I want to).

Same! I used to roleplay as many different characters in my childhood, but as I got older I got way too terrified of being OOC that I just can’t bring myself to do it anymore. But the guy really did get way too bent out of shape with the way things were going in the one shot. I can say with absolute certainty that there was plenty of fan work that took characters into whole sorts of different directions, so wouldn’t never been out of place. And in regards to his bull crap of there should be no murder. The fandom is chock-full of grim dark stories. All you have to do is mention “cupcakes“ and “rainbow factory“ (a big warning for anybody who wants to look them up, they are Grimm dark Gore stories.) and that’s just the tip of a very dark aspect of fan work (and that’s not even mentioning Fallout Equestria)

Imho you can talk about stuff around sexuality with teens, BUT it has to be either some professional setting (like one on one therapy) or in ttrpgs' case some sort of serious rp moment where you keep the raunchy stuff out and discuss (in-character) deep topics such as the Fighter's forced exile backstory over simply being gay, and them getting better thanks to the party accepting them for who they are. Of course this assumes everyone is fine with it ooc. And it's better to foreshadow that "real talk time" in session 0.

We are roughly level five, I am in Eldridge night, dictation will butchered this part. I’m basically a fighters bastardized version of a paladin. I have balanced my spells and Kendra up so that I have an equal number of utility and damage dealing. Essentially barbecued a black dragon with fire bolt, thank you surprise at 20. Technically speaking, I'm a semi-brony (love the show, don't get the overhype) and I kinda love almost all the TTRPGs that were derived from it (Ponyfinder for Pathfinder, Roan and a few more - ironically, the only one I dislike is the OFFICIAL one from Hasbro; seriously, they ditched combat altogether because it wouldn't be "kiddie friendly". Let's be honest, most kids I know are borderline murderhobos-in-training) but going bananas over something not being canon, well, baffles me. So what if in my game Ponka Po isn't a sweet tooth like in the show? So what if Fluttershy is pen pal with TF2's Heavy? So what if Equestria is actually in a small valley in the United States (that would make it an equine Xanth, by the way)? It doesn't matter, as long as everyone has fun.

The DM from the horror story with the Roaring 20s campaign made a historically baseless ruling. Firearm laws were very permissive during the 20s and it wasn’t until the dreaded National Firearms Act of ‘34 that owning machine guns was a legal thing to purchase. The concealed carry restrictions weren’t enforced all that well, and very few cities had strict laws compared to today. This is almost like running a TTRPG based on the Vietnam War but having a rule against the players having guns, air strikes, and artillery. It’s senseless and an oxymoron. Edit: when the DM said that his campaign took place in an alternate version of the US, I was kinda reminded of the videos on how The Third Reich could actually win WW2. Like those videos, the setting of the campaign had little to no historical basis whatsoever.

i have a set of green, glow-in-the-dark dice, that are... not cursed per se, as i consistently roll really high on them. however, in the system me and the people i play with (we do litrpg with the occasional dicerolls thrown in for flavor, where the higher roll wins, and without any stat modifiers for any of our characters), a high roll means the character the roll was for succeeds in what they were planning to do. this means that for my character, whose plans are actually damaging to both her and most people around her, rolling high is actually "worse", since it means she is constantly doing things that are not good for her personal growth as a character. thankfully, we all (me especially) enjoy the drama she keeps causing with the power of nat20s that lead her down the path of misery without her even realizing it!

I've been fortunate enough to be in an MLP one-shot with a friendly and chill GM who didn't mind that I hadn't seen the past few seasons. He just let me know that a few spoilers that I vaguely knew about were a thing and that otherwise, it was just a low stakes story that felt like it could be a random episode of the show. The other players were a mom and her daughters, and overall, it was a lovely time. Too bad not all fans can be so accommodating for the sake of fun.

As a brony I can confirm that not all of us are as obsessive over correct lore. There are TONS of things fans have come up with involving canon mysteries or characters that to this day are still supported universally as official FANON lore. The problem player sounded more like the neckbeard weirdos most sensible older brony's are compared to. And that's just a castle full of red flags in itself.

Here's the thing about lore. Official canon lore will always be canon. But that doesn't mean lore of franchise has to be faithful in a game. Example: apparently Gorons don't like the taste of precious stones like rubies as they find the taste bitter. My source is the game BOTW. Can't really get more officially canon than that (it's npc dialogue). But that doesn't mean your Goron character cannot like the taste of said precious stones!

Brony Rage: As someone who has internalized the lore of Equestria for my own projects, Iiiiii'd probably be nitpicky about it, too. The wiki isn't a very reliable datasource; if you want the hard data, ya gotta watch the show with Hot Fuzz Rules: every little detail matters. If OP doesn't respect or care much about the lore of stuff, that's really his failing. DM Sadist: Not so much a sadist, but an adversarial/petty DM. One of those dickheads that thinks DnD is about winning, and if you're not clowning on your "opponent(s)" you're not having fun. It's a cooperative storytelling game, not Skyrim. Cursed Dice: If they appeared by facsimile from nowbere, then yes, there is something unnatural about them. Not "the imaginary red pitchfork man" unnatural - parallel timeline unnatural. And if all they do is ill, then there may be a nebative tantric charge on them that continued use is only feeding into. Submerge them in holy water under direct sunlight and leave them for a day and a day. If they're still rolling bad afterward, burn them in a deadwood fire with a bundle of sage and rosemary and ceremonially dust your hands off over the fire, symbolically washing your hands of them and breaking the connection. That'll both destroy them and unbind whatever charge was on them. Them Not You: There is no universe in which firearms would be illegal in that time period. The 2nd Amendment is a *constitutional right.* That means gun ownership is basically a human right for US citizens (citizens, I stress, not migrants), and is edified in the highest-authority document upon which the nation was founded. As such it supercedes all forms of legislation, regardless of what certain people seem to think. That DM is an idiot, a shrimp, or a traitor.

As Patton Oswalt could tell you, between IDW comics and Lauren Faust, MLP went WAY harder on lore than it had any right to, but yeah, getting that upset about an April Fools one-shot is a bit much. Maybe if it was an ongoing campaign? I dunno, I feel like if I were present the response to every complaint would be "dude, quit metagaming". Like, sure, the player may know something, but I doubt their character can justify knowing those things.

Cursed dice? I don't have cursed dice. I have cursed dice SETS. Every time I spend more than $25 on a set of dice, they perform poorly for me. Metal dice? Crap. Averaged a single 20 per three sessions (our sessions are weekly) in the year I played with them. Dispel Dice? Never rolled a 20 in the 2 months I've had them, got 3 1s in a single session. Custom metal/resin inlay dice set (Dice Envy)? Averaged an 8 on rolls. Only had a single 20 in 6 months of play. Wrymwood Prismatic Glass Set? Never rolled above an 11. My coworker even rolled and it took him 11 tries, inbetween that only two others were above 10. Acrylic dice (Chessex/Kraken Dice)? 3 20s and a single 1 in one session. I will never EVER trust any set that I paid more than $20 for.

The Mafia RPG story. Player: I buy a revolver. GM: You can't buy a revolver. Its illegal to own guns. Player: Where are our characters located? GM: In the United States. Player: In that case I buy a revolver and a sawed off shotgun. GM: I SAID, that owning guns is illegal! Player: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. The United States Constitution, second amendment. GM: This is an alternate universe where owning guns is illegal in America. Player: We're playing as gangsters, are we not? GM: Yes. Player: So we're playing as criminals. GM: Yes. Player: As in people who break the law and do stuff that's illegal for a living. GM: Yes. Player: I'm buying two revolvers, a sawed off shotgun, and a Tommy gun. GM: YOU CANNOT BUY A GUN! GUNS! ARE! ILLEGAL! Player: I! AM! PLAYING! A! CRIMINAL! . . . . I! BREAK! THE! LAW! At least, that's what I would have done. Except I probably would have jumped right to "I'm a mafia hitman. I break the law for a living."

I'm a new DM and I'd *NEVER* be able to "have fun" by killing my player's characters off. Hell, there's been a few times where there's almost been a PC death or two(which funnily enough was in a fight club setup I gave them all) and so the first thing I made happen after the combat was for the NPC in the room to give the characters I'd nearly killed a healing potion each so it hopefully wouldn't happen again on accident because of how I set it up. I also had to call for a break so I could mute my mic and have my panic attack over it in private 😅 Really, though, how can anyone have fun doing that to their players? If anyone understands, please help *me* understand it.

Mob So you are playing mobsters but you cannot carry guns because it is illegal? So, here's the thing about the mob, they do not care about the law. That there is a (unconstitutional) law in some places that says you cannot carry guns would do absolutely nothing to stop mobsters or any other criminal types from carrying guns. By definition criminals do not follow the law.

Dude in the first story is a major dufus. I like mlp too. But d&d isn't so much about what is lore accurate when bringing in outside sources for plots and areas like ponyville from mlp or cybertron from transformers. It,'s more about taking things in a 'what if' direction. I absolutely love the discord trilogy by Disney Fanatic. (You can find the first 2 (bride of discord and daughter of discord) on KZread, broken up in segments with voicework and artwork as well as the third one. Though the third one on KZread as well, though not done by the same people. It's more read in the style of a word reader, a monotone automaton basically. But the stories themselves are just awesome!

I would have loved to have played in that MLP game... just without the other guy who lacked imagination to fill in for any "discrepancies". Since we see various ponies in random places all the time in the show anyway. Just let it play out see where it goes. Also they clearly had Zombies in that world, which makes sense since there are also things like Hydras and Manticores and cockatrice as part of MLP's canon lore. Even Cerberus and tartarus are canon to MLP:FiM It's the perfect setting for a DnD game... if you don't mind playing as something like a pony or a griffin or something. Hasbro owns MLP, they also own Wizards of the Coast.

Them Not You - the whole idea of Americans being strapped to the jiggly parts with a small armory is stereotyping, and (while we've had issues with gun ownership since we became a country) gun control laws were actually fairly common until one particular (in)Justice decided to pen an incredibly broad opinion against those laws in the Naughties.

Brony story: Honestly I think everyone sucks there. Obvs, rules (fandom?) lawyer was in the wrong, games don't have to be 100% lore accurate. But also, OP states that neither they, nor any of the other players, have watched My Little Pony. So I don't totally get why they would run a game set in the universe, and using the characters, of a show they don't watch and have no interest in? And it sounds like these things were not disclosed to that player before-hand. I can imagine that if I joined a Legend of Zelda oneshot, and literally none of the other players or the Dm had ever played/watched LoZ, and they did things like have Link be secretly working with Ganon, or have a bunch of Gerudo men, etc, I'd probably be upset. I wouldn't likely stick around, like this player did, I would just leave. I'd be excited to join a game set in a world that I already have fallen in love with, just to feel frustrated and upset when the DM is completely ignorant of the lore, and changes the world so much that it literally isn't LoZ anymore. At that point, why label it LoZ at all? Like I said, I think both sides were in the wrong here. The DM should have been much clearer about what the game would be like and their lack of knowledge of MLP, and the player should have just left when they realized this wasn't the game they were wanting/expecting. ESH.

The last "horror story" irks me. OP is not a victim so much as they make themselves out to be. Look, TTRPGs are games, they're meant to be fun. For some people, ERP is fun, others enjoy being on the sidelines for that kind of thing. "I'm no prude" And yet, you make a post pearl clutching and then throwing a fit because the group you were in didn't read your mind. The DM should have made it clear that this kind of content was on the table for the game, but I feel like OP is more the bad guy than the DM or his GF.
