    "I killed the characters you created yourselves and replaced them with monsters so my super-cool paladin character could slaughter them! Wasn't that fun?!" How could anybody think people would react positively to that?! Likewise for altering a PC's backstory without the player's knowledge or consent! Even beginner DMs should realize that this kind of power-tripping is going to drive players away!

    What's annoying me about this one, aside from the blatant power-tripping, is that the idea of a campaign like that, where your players' characters are replaced by monsters, has the potential to actually be good if handled correctly. Maybe the end goal is to try and figure out how to get your real bodies back? And if you MUST include the stupid paladin, maybe have him be the initial quest giver and turn out to be either the BBEG or has gone missing and that's the reason the team even went to the dungeon? Obviously it would need to be carefully considered and managed, but it has potential. Then to see a good plot idea be used just for the DM to get off on a power fantasy....

    The best DMPC I ever ran was a 14 year old spoiled noble that happened to be the "chosen one destined to defeat the dark lord". The players where mercenaries hired by the father to protect and train the kid as he traveled to collect all the pieces of the legendary sword to defeat the dark lord. He was everything you hate in a spoiled noble that's been told he's special, and the players HATED having to constantly save him or stop him causing trouble while not getting fired as the money for this job would be enough to fullfill their dreams. With allot of tough love and patience the players slowly forged the boy into a respectful and true noble hero they all loved. They started at level 5 and every year they gained a level until they hit level 10 and the noble was ready to face the dark lord with their help. The final battle had the noble and dark lord fight while the players held off the minions. They loved seeing the boy they raised and trained being an OP baddass that was beyond their level. Moral is that DMPCs can be used for a great story, you just have to get the players to buy into them.

    @@moizzy1587 no. In game years. Each year consisted of one extended multilayer dungeon dive (4 to 8 sessions), then with downtime between that dungeon and the next dungeon I let them RP training and teaching the kid. They basically picked his class, stats, and feats through the levels. He was level 15 when they hit level 10. They loved that they made him so much stronger than them. I made it clear to them that the dark lord was stronger than they would get ever get in the campaign, and if they failed to train him strong enough, he could lose to the dark lord and they'd lose the campaign. The dark lord was level 15 so the fight was close, but the hero was a multiclass paladin/fighter that had a relic tier sword. It was really cool watching him go from not contributing to combat to actually leading the charge.

    The problem is your DMPC is still the protagonist of the story. Why can only he assemble the pieces? Couldn't you just have your party find the legendary weapons that allow them to defeat the "dark lord"? Maybe the Paladin has a legendary shield, the Ranger a legendary bow, the Wizard an arcane grimoire with spells that are of higher level that what they could normally cast and so on... Couldn't the player grow as heroes themselves, without having to babysit a spoiled brat? Why would you make your level 10 party fight MINIONS while THEY should be the protagonists of the story? I think this only worked because your players didn't want to disappoint you, but everyone would have preferred to fight the dark lord themselves. Of course, I could be wrong, but it's rare for the whole party to be willing to play a Samwise Gamgee role, while the DM is playing the "Chosen One".

    @@andreacallegari7137 before starting the game I pitched as the players where not the heroes, they where the hero's party. They thought it would be fun to NOT be the main characters for once and have play a game of escort missions. There is a level of challenge and roleplay entertainment that comes with having to protect and train a kid that runs right into a goblin horde because "I'm the chosen one, they can't kill me". The fact is my players where tired of always being the ones to defeat the dragon, fight the vampire count, stop the elemental cultists, etc. So they asked me to run something new. I also made the game high risk for death. Several players died protecting the kid, and made new characters.

    That's an incredible DMPC. My only example is a rogue-ish guide that led the party into a city inside a mountain, and after dealing with the "boss" he tried to nick an artifact that caused the whole conflict and get away through a portal of planes, only for the party to shove him into the Plane of Hades and close it on him. I had intended for him to escape as a hook for a campaign I wanted to run, as this was just a one-shot, but I was laughing my ass off that they pulled that off. I didn't prepare for the possibility of my players doing something like that, but I wasn't mad, it killed me XD

    You could just throw the Baba Yaga at them and it would still be correct. Don't even tell them that's why they were attacked. Just have them roll initiative later that night as she visits them. If it ever happens again, do it again. They'll eventually figure out that hiring dogs summons the Baba Yaga. The real question would be i are they going to abuse that later on when they're actually in a position to defeat her? Will they harm another dog to summon her so they can beat her?

    A one-shot where you play as monsters defending their dungeon/tomb/haunted house/etc from a group of adventurers sounds like a really fun game. It’s a shame the DM had to go about it in the worst way possible. If that’s what you want to run, just be upfront about it with the players, and don’t make the adventurers overpowered DMPCs.

But let's just say this mindset worked, how id attacking an innocent animal "cool" ? Don't most girls like animals? Wouldn't this upset them? What was the mindset here? Because it sounds like someone who never had a pet, who is selfish and decided that if they think they're cool, others will think as well. A very selfish mindset tbh. That and if he simply petted the dog first, he'd achieve what he wanted to do with the girl in the first place by showing a sensitive side. The guy has his priorities backwards! XD

    To the OP (DM) in the second story, you handled things appropriately. The only other thing you could have done, since everyone (particularly Kyle) was new to TTRPGs, is stopped the game and explain to him that this isn't a computer game and how his actions will have consequences and if he continues to play like a murder-hobo he will be killed in short order.

One of the common "selling points" of a TTPRG over a computer game is that you can "do what ever you want" and some people take that to mean there are no consequences to their actions in game as opposed to what it really means, that your character isn't restricted to a arbitrary set of actions.

Sadly some players and dms ignore that just because something is fun for them doesn't mean it's fun for the group or think that it is. Like you said communication is key. Edited to add: the bs I was referring to and why I think those who knew him would decline Is the fact paladin is dm's former character. Story #3 - The DM's idea was potentially interesting. Imposing it on a Player, messing with his backstory, and hanging a bunch of murders on him, was a lousy thing to do. Some other things said, such as Players worried about the DM retaliating if they say or do the wrong thing, leads me to believe that walking away from this DM is the wise move.

    To the Werewolf player in the last story: If you've been enjoying the game otherwise, tell the DM that you would like to retire your current character and make a new one (that's probably the plan anyway, since it seems like the Werewolf is doomed to die). Reiterate that you did not appreciate having your character and backstory messed with in this way, and ask that they promise not do that again. If they won't agree, or if the game just wasn't that great in the first place, then it's probably time to leave and find another DM.

    I would suggest requesting a retcon on the werewolf thing, honestly, but aside from that, I'm in your corner. Furthermore, if the Barbarian player is scared the DM might fuck with their character too, that's a clear red flag.

    Last one: I like the idea of surprising a PC with being a part of a group they are hunting down as a way to force empathy. Now you are presented with a way to deal with problems other than blanket murder. I have no idea if this is why they did it or not, but it is a good wrinkle in so far as it is a dramatic twist in the game. Only thing is I would not retcon to make a mystery twist. The dm is home brewing rules for lychanthropy, which is common as the 5e rules are pretty terrible. I do not see an issue with presenting lychanthropes as being unaware of their curse; that makes a better mystery. I am also OK with a moral dilemma with no clear way to resolve; the werewolf is innocent and does not know they kill people. This is might even be a fun link up to a sub quest to find a cure or means of controlling lychanthropy. There are interesting ways to go with this... not really a horror story yet. OP should talk to the dm before they take it to the internet, I think.

  • @EnraiChannel

    @EnraiChannel

    Yeah it has potential for a story. But the problem is again lack of communication. The DM should have still made it clear that one of them could be the werewolf. Or at least contacted the guy they wanted to be the werewolf and ask if it was okay. They made one of the biggest sins as a DM which is taking away player agency. People treat meta knowledge like a plague, but in these kind of situations they can actually improve the RP.

  • @rynowatcher

    @rynowatcher

    5 ай бұрын

    @@EnraiChannel I disagree they had to tell them or ask them about being a werewolf. RAW you can contract lychanthropy from fighting werewolves, so it is like asking for permission to do take hp damage or to use dice to decide saving throws: kind of built into the game. The player can always roll up a new character if they reach the end of that character's playable story, and it sounds like the other players that want to kill the player, not the gm. The op has a bigger issue with the other players than the gm, based on that. That is a good excuse for roleplay and character growth; ie, these creatures we have been relentlessly slaughtering might not have known they were killing people during the full moon... are we the baddies here or do we kill our friend and ignore the implications this has to our own actions? The interesting part is if they are forced to deal with the fact the werewolves might be doing this unwillingly and forcing it on a player shows them without ambiguity. What are you going to do about it? The assumption that the party will kill op betrays the person's murder hobo tendencies, though. I do agree the gm flubbed this one; springing a player as a werewolf is a mystery plot and mysteries require set up and foreshadowing. The fact there were no signs of lychanthropy for the PC and changing the back story is bad design. I had a game where I dealt cards to randomly decide who had a mindflayer larva in their head and they kept losing time, forgetting things they should know, hearing voices... that worked out well because it was a mystery that ended with them finding a problem organically and giving them opertunity to deal with it.

    I would have handle the Dog Kicker story with Drill-Sargeant rules, one of you f-up the rest of your team mates will pay for your. NPC in town will refuse to talk, trade or be hostile to the party now know to the locals as 'the dog killers'. If the party is full of very reconizable characters new will spread to other towns to beware of said party of baddies.

    Honestly, that's going to be a problem with any agency which feels they may absolutely need to trespass on somebody's property and involes people who don't live with and understand dogs. The thinking going in will always be, "We need to assert complete dominance and control of the environment as quickly as possible so we reduce the need for people to die." Except the dog doesn't understand it's supposed to be still and quiet, and as long as there's some agent who isn't sure how dangerous the dog is and doesn't know a better way to handle the dog than shoot it before it riles up the humans into fighting too (not reasonable, but that's going to be the thought process of somebody in that situation)... I can empathize with why it keeps happening while still believing most of the raids in which a dog gets shot weren't raids which should have been made in the first place.

    The werewolf campaign is not bad but not good either. Werewolves are unaware that they transform, so he may have omitted it to give a sense of actual mystery, since some players out themselves too quickly. The DM did make a big booboo on this though. One question you would ask ALL YOUR PLAYERS would be "would you be ok with a mystery to you about your character?" And you should specify that it will be significant to the game. Then they will know to suspect not only the NPCs, but also the party.

    Story One: I think he was trying to do some sort of Castlevania thing with his character as the star. No one likes to be on the losing side of an unfair fight, however his concept minus the overpowered DMPC has merit. I might run a monster one shot one of these days. Story Two: I don't get what this guy is thinking. I would have stopped the game and explained that his actions have consequences and doing such rash actions will most likely get him killed. I would have also explained that NPCs aren't just little bag of experience sitting around to be harvested. They have agency and will respond to his actions accordingly. If he decided to double down after this talk, I would have pulled no punches and had the owner and possibly other NPCs attack too. If he doesn't get it after seeing consequences in action, he is obviously not mature enough for TTRPGs. Story Three: I get that the DM wanted it to be a surprise twist, but the player needed to be consulted first and their should have been hints. The only thing the DM achieved was dividing the party and alienating the reluctant and nonsensical werewolf. Character agency is important!

    I hate bad GMs who give DMPC's a bad name. I run one in one of the three groups that I have because that group only has three players. The PC is basically a support character who never says anything unless addressed by the PCs. He has no direction in the game. He doesn't lead. He is subjected to the same situations as the PCs. He acts like henchmen.

    OP DMPC Story. If you have to have a DMPC, the best way I think to handle it is have the DMPC handle things "Off Screen". Like if the party is being attacked by a horde of minions, delaying them getting to the BBEG. Have the DMPC do something that temporarily gives the party an opening to go after the BBEG instead while the DMPC stays behind. "I'll keep these wretches busy! You all go and finish this!" The DMPC gets their "Great Stand" or "Last Stand" moment that the DM can narrate however they please later, while the party stays main focus and does their stuff in game. Personally I don't like DMPC's at all and avoid when possible. But every now and then either a DMPC or an important NPC has to be around to drive the plot forward. And this doesn't work for every encounter, but could for the big boss fights. Personally I like having the Party Hire extra party members that they control during combat, but the DM controls nominally during role play like a normal NPC.

Ngl, if I was in OP3s position, I would have dropped the game the moment they told me that, not going to stay in a game where a DM is that trash they caqn't think of a way to do good werewolf and just randomly make a party member one and change their backstory.

  • @GundamAngelicDevil

    DMs making changes to a player character's backstory without consulting them only makes me distrust the DM. "You can always make a new character" is moot since the DM can modify the backstory of that character as well. The trust is simply gone and I couldn't care less how great of a DM or storyteller they are.
