THank you! My ascend weathercocks so bad, but i also have mobility issues so a fixed or slide in skeg is not an option cause I usually have to get in on the shoreline

Thanks for the video and parts list. I need to add a DIY skeg to my smaller kayak too. I am sure yours works just fine but looking at the side view of your skeg it looks like the skeg might achieve a straighter up/down orientation if you reversed the skeg in the holder. Maybe that cutout at the bottom half is meant to better fit over the mounting mechanism? Not sure, just looks that way.

I'm doing the same thing to mine, but I'm having trouble drilling the hole through the rudder pin. The bracket drilled out easy, but I can't seem to get a bit that will drill through the pin. Any suggestions?

Use HSS or Cobalt Tipped Bits. Grind/file a tiny flat spot where you want to start drilling. Pre-drill the hole with a much smaller bit, and then go back with the actual sized bit.

Hey Chris, what hardware did you use to bolt the bracket to the yak itself? Screws, well nuts, etc?

@@ChrisSgaraglino Thanks. I ended up doing a similar install using your guide. My kayak has a flat square end, about 4"x4". I used toggle bolts to mount the included bracket because I was able to place the toggle/anchor part inside the kayak without drilling a hole large enough to fit the anchor through like you would in sheet rock.

Lawrence Shudra I added a piece of Bungee Cord that acted like a spring that automatically lowers the skeg. You can see the routing here: www.theoutdoorlife.us/diy-retractable-kayak-skeg/

@@ChrisSgaraglino I get it now. Would you say that it is harder or easier to steer with the skeg? We have a 13' Pescador tandem that tracks pretty well. We do a lot of flat water paddling and wind is a frustrating issue. A rudder would solve the problem, but we have molded foot wells. You skeg idea could be a solution. Here's our website with some pics of our tandem. kayakingtexas.wordpress.com/

damkayaker DYI men’s Do it yourself. Which I did. However, I also did it on a kayak that was not designed with any mounting by using and modifying other pieces to to create a mounting place, and modifying the skeg to be used in the new mount - quite the definition of DYI!

That isn’t a skeg, it’s a rudder. And it’s not DIY when you bought it on Amazon.

If it’s fixed, it’s a Skeg.. if it turns side to side is a rudder. It’s made from parts that not designed to used in the manner it’s is now, it’s DIY. If you want to nit-pick this apart, you’ll lose. The real question is what’s so screwed up in your life, that you have to attack a kayak enhancement?
