DIY! Kayak Rudder (money saver)

Спорт

I wanted to save the cost of the rudder for the Old Town Predator 13. I was able to take items that I had around the garage and built a rudder for my kayak. In this video I will take you on a tour of what I was able to come up with.

    You just saved me a few bucks with the weed eater line! I’m just about to start a rudder install, and I had been trying to figure out what to use for rudder controls. Thanks!

    Very nice! I got mine out for the maiden voyage yesterday. She paddles great, but would certainly benefit from a skeg at the very least. Caught a couple dink LMBs and my finger on a whopper plopper. All good now and looking forward to my next voyage.

    I agree about the skeg for sure. If I don’t have the rudder down it doesn’t glide well when I stop paddling.

    Nice setup and vid! Do you find that the foot pedals don’t leave you with as much to brace against? I’m refitting a kayak I bin dived out of store at the moment and there’s a lot of parts missing. It has toe pedals adjusters, which mean you can brace with your whole feet, but it’s also not nearly as effective at actually turning the rudder. And I want it to be effective in that aspect, as I’m adding a sail too.

    Yes, I think you definitely give up the ability to brace yourself when making the pedals movable. To me it’s not a major issue because I spend 95% of my time on small calm water. If I were to do this again I think I would just make it as a stationary skew to help with tracking.

    Do you find the lack of a fixed foot brace a hindrance to your paddle stroke?

    Sorry, just saw the comment. I don’t, but I probably don’t have the best paddling stroke to begin with.

    Hello! You should be able to work out a way to make it work. I didn’t really have much of a plan going in, just trial and error.

    Did you need to sharpen the edge of the rudder?

    I did not shape the edge at all. I suppose it adds a little drag, but it’s a very small area.

    How did you feed the weed eater string through?

  • @KayakAnglingMinnesota

    @KayakAnglingMinnesota

    The Predator 13 is set up for a factory rudder so the holes are already in place. A hollow tube runs from the front holes to the back, so it was just a matter of feeding it through.
