Poor Man's Kayak Modifications

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Cheap Menards kayak fishing modifications.
This video was put together as a inexpensive way to get your sit in kayak water ready for fishing. I show you how to install heavy duty handles, an inexpensive anchor trolley system, flush mount rod holders and rod leashes.
Keep in mind this is a sit in kayak, the open cockpit will allow water to get in. That being said, I do not use silicone on my drilled holes. What I do is use a rubber washer that fits the stainless steel screw nice and snug and then a stainless washer slightly over sized to the rubber washer to create a water tight seal. You will get more water through the cockpit opening then any hole on this kayak if any at all. These are inexpensive modifications to get on the water. At any time you can take these ideas and upgrade to better quality material and maybe even build on these ideas and make them better, it’s your yak. Keep in mind that any cuts and or holes you make a very hard to repair so measure tice cut once. Some of these mods are necessary and some may not be for your style of fishing. Be sure to check out my playlist of other kayak mods that may be helpful.

Great video. I applaud the fact that you use nuts and bolts and nut just screws. This is more secure. Tip: Use heat shrink to cover your paracord knots, instead of tape.

Keep in mind zip ties break down in the sunlight, I would recommend replacing any ziptie exposed to sunlight at least once per year. Somebody already mentioned backing plates, another alternative is LARGE fender washers, available at hardware stores or big box lumberyard/home improvement stores.

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. kzread.infoUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

I came across this as I was looking for some mod ideas to make our little dolphins a little more "fun", versatile, lake machines...as the broke mom, I found this quite sensible to do to save us from wanting something else that wont fit on my Aveo roof. Also appreciate the use of washers/rubber gaskets as the marine silicone is not budget friendly. lovin it, thanks for posting and giving me some confidence to drill into a perfectly good boat skin...eek!...lol. I got us those little dock rods instead of long rods because they fit inside the rig for car travel. (no large fish here)Mounted them with velcro tape... and put two mesh zippered school supply bags for small items on the inside (also with velcro tape), one on each side these are great for keys, radio/cell phone in a wet case, gum, sun lotion-another.. idea for you) all I need is a cup holder now bahaha...happy kayaking!

Good luck with your modification ideas. And thanks for watching.

i added a short piece of bungee on the pad eyes front and back, with stainless pulleys from home depot (cheap and awesome) rather than run anchor chord thru the pad eyes. it acts as a shock absorber for choppy conditions and puts less stress on the pad eyes. also, i use stainless steel pad eyes from Austin kayak and canoe ( they also have pulleys and tons of great accessories) because i've snapped several nylon ones. do it right, do it once!

Common Stainless d-ring tie downs have the same spacing as the plastic deck eye fittings holding the original handles. I replaced mine, and have hauled up and down an 8 ft bank with no problems using them to drag it by.

I wish I were brave enough to start drilling and sawing into my kayak so I could do some cool mods. Great video! I did have to replace some eyelets on my kayak. I used marine sealant from our local Ace Hardware on the eyelets on the inside of my yak. Yeah, it's a sit-in and invasive water in the cockpit is unavoidable, but, I felt better inside by covering the bolts w/ marine sealant. Guess I'm OCD like that! LOL

It would be great if you did/do a follow up video on the water demonstrating how each of the additions to the kayak work/function or benefit the fisherman.Especially the anchor trolley.

Rick Barraza sorry I’ve had a lot of changes in my life over the last couple years and finding time to make videos had been tough. The anchor trolley is all based on current and wind. Being able to anchor at either end of the boat helps position yourself for casting. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

I hear you. As we get older time seems to fly. I’ll search for “kayak anchor trolley” vids out there. I’ve already purchased and installed the rod holders from Yakattack just like yours on my old blue Tarpon 120. The thing is like 16 years old lol. Mine came out looking just like yours, angled to the outside of the craft. Thanks for the reply!

I found that your DIY upgrades were extremely thoughtful. I find that a thoughtful and capable "end user", person can often accomplish for dollars, that which high paid engineers sometimes obtain for much more. Power on!
