DIY layered haircut in 5 mins!

I made this tutorial for a friend, but thought I'd share it with the public. I have been cutting my own hair this way for about eight years now, and it saves me a ton of money! I am happy with the result every time, and each time I do it I get a little bit better.
IF YOU CHOOSE TO FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL:
- Please understand that you are still taking a risk, as everyone's hair and preference is different. Always start by cutting a small amount, you can easily cut it shorter later.
- I am not a professional hair stylist, and have never gone to school for this. I actually have a Masters of Architecture.
- If you part your hair deeply to one side of your head, you should probably not use this method, as the cut it will produce will not look even under that circumstance. I have a slight side part, and it works fine.
Feel free to ask any questions below!
What you need:
Clean, wet, conditioned hair
Cutting shears of sharp scissors ($10-12 at any drugstore or here on Amazon goo.gl/Q2ORh7) My scissors in the video were old, please have sharp scissors!
A comb
A brush (optional, many people recommend you don't brush wet hair, so you can use just a comb if you prefer.)
This cute is very similar to the new #trendy #wolfcut!

I have been a hairstylist for 30 yrs and I find the most comprehensive tutorials to cut your own hair are done by people like you in your home. The professional hair videos are ridiculously in-depth to the point of sounding like brain surgery. You did good!

I have been using your method for years, and each time i watch this video i think "i should leave a message." Here it finallly is. This is by far the best tutorial i have come across for easy, quick diy hair cut with style! The first time i used this video, my grandma a retired beautician raved about it! Just last night i cut about 12 inches off, gave myself a shoulder length bob with layers and it worked great. I live in a remote area and thanks to your video, i can still maintain a cute hairstyle! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Isn't a Bob all the same length at the bottom? How would this work if it gives a tapered bottom on your hair?

@@Lisa42002 there are many types of bobs such as the "inverted bob" www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=stayglam.com/beauty/inverted-bob/&ved=2ahUKEwj6_eDf8L7iAhVgHTQIHYLCA50QwaICMAx6BAgNEC8&usg=AOvVaw1QrJI6TRGbdNPVutbIzmBN That are in fact not all the same length, most modern bob styles are tapered one way or the other...its kind of the point

I was debating using this for such a cut. For the inverted, did you just do the pony tail at the nape of the neck so its longer in front?

I found your tutorial a little over a year ago and have been cutting my own hair this way since. I cannot thank you enough for all the money you have saved me. The results achieved with this method look exactly the same as a ridiculously expensive haircut you could get at a salon. Not to mention, I have rarely left a salon completely satisfied with a haircut. I love it every single time I cut my own hair and it looks EXACTLY how I want it to..every time! Still amazes me, even after doing it for over a year. THANK YOU!!!! P.s. I used to go sometimes up to a year without getting my hair cut because I hated the whole experience, and now I cut it myself about every 6 weeks. You're amazing.

But that can get pricey at a salon. Since I first watched this video 5 months ago, I've trimmed it myself 3 times and each time it looks better :)

A BIG, BIG Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a 61 year young woman, with long graying hair, 2 , days ago, my sister-in- law, trimmed my hair. She happens to be a beautician, from 30 years ago! Well, I, told her to take about an inch, or so off, as you can guess, she took over 3 inch's, ask her to leave the draped affect at the ends, in the back, with the sides slightly shorter, nope, didn't listen there either. Also, ask her to trim the layers and not to touch the bangs, didn't listen!! Well, I, wasn't a very happy woman. So, I, looked on line and found your video!!!!!!!!!!! I, did what you showed and WHALLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AM SO HAPPY, with the turn out, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! Will not have to, depend, on another person any longer, cause as long as I, can do it myself, I, will. XOXOXO'S, FROM ALABAMA, Kathy

I even got drastic this spring and cut it short, shoulder length, but the same technique, and it looks great. As I'm growing it back out I'm trimming using the same idea every three months. It allows my hair to grow and look so good. People ask me who cuts my hair, and it's me, because of her!! Couldn't be simpler. I always share her video, no one else's.

Brilliant! I realised at work today that my hair was in desperate need of a good trim but didn't want to spend $50+ for a haircut for my rather long hair. Followed your instructions exactly and it turned out amazing! I even went a step further and sectioned a very small part at the very top of my head to get some shorter pieces. Been wanting a hairdresser to cut the top short and leave the bottom long for EVER! Always told "can't do it, your hair is too fine, the base won't be full enough"....well, I just did it myself and it IS full at the bottom and I still got the short layers i wanted in the top to give my fine hair some oomph. Thank you thank you THANK YOU! I did invest $18 in some quality barber scissors. Worth every penny as I can see they will be getting future use thanks to this video.

Due to health issues I rarely leave home except for doctor appointments, but even that became embarrassing. I'm older, 63, & can't work anymore. ..so no more $ for haircuts. You think YOUR hair is fine?!! Mine is SO thin - clips, hair ties, etc. just slide out. Plus the ends looked old; damaged & uneven. I washed & left some conditioner in, and watched your video several times. Went into my bathroom WITH the video so that I could pause when needed, came out with healthy, fuller looking hair (4" needed off) & blow-dried until barely damp. Round brushed only the ends under my chin with a little nourishing mousse - saved $$ and BETTER than my last "pro" cut! THANKS SO MUCH - your way helped boost my self-esteem too!

Ok so just tried this. I had washed my hair last night and didn't want to wash it again, so I just dampened it with water. I have a LOT of hair (same length as yours but incredibly thick). So this took quite a lot of effort just to brush it forward. Brushing it back after it got very knotty but such is life! I have some great hair scissors but even these struggled a bit with how much hair I was cutting all at once. Anyway, it worked brilliantly, very happy with the results. I did the top layer shorter as well and that worked well. The only thing I would add is after doing the straight line cut, do a few little snips into the hair to give it a slightly looser look (so you don't get that scissor line) - for the top layer anyway, I can't imagine you'd notice on the bottom layer. This was amazing, it cut the time it takes to cut my hair in half!

jilloora I agree. I have never left a hairstylist 100% happy… Usually I lean towards unhappy. Since cutting my own hair (which I've done for years) I've never been unhappy with it. Sometimes it works out better than others, but at least when I say "No more than 1 inch" *I* will not cut more than 1 inch! I've had expensive cuts and inexpensive cuts and seriously, probably my most unhappy experience was with the one I paid the most for at a high-end place. Like others have said, it's probably only hairstylists who are getting wound up about people cutting their own hair because they are "not doing it right". Who cares, as long as we love the finished product!

I have cut my own hair most of my life too! I can do full bangs, layers, etc. that look quite well. I have even made my own clothing, accessories, even a few simple makeup products. I feel like people throw rocks at these sorts of tutorials because they've never had to struggle financially in such ways. Just because we aren't well off doesn't mean we can't invent ways to look and feel good about ourselves! Great job! :)

I have now used this technique for the second time and still love it. Some tips: stop and consider the angle you cut. Remember that the "top" of your hair (if you mold it like she does) should be the longest (that's the back of your hair), so angle higher on the bottom side getting longer towards the top. Be very cautious with the second ponytail and cut. It is easy to go too short. The second time I did this, I combined it with the point cutting I've seen in other videos (scissors pointed straight into the ends, snipping to create a less harsh line) and loved it even more. Thanks again for this video!!

No flexing, no hawking products, just a straight-up video showing how you cut your hair. Started off about 2 inches, looked at it, decided I need more off. Did it again. Still felt like I needed a little more. So then I divided my hair in half and just pulled to the front, and cut about another inch. My hair looks like I went to my favorite salon. THANK YOU SO MUCH. This was so easy. And as long as you are careful, it will turn out good. THANK YOU. 😊

I wanted to come back to your video and post thank you doll, I truly appreciate you posting this video. I've been cutting my own hair since I was a teen (bad salon experiences) then once I hit 20s I'd give them a go again, after a few more bad experiences and 150 plus tip every month to two months I decided it was time to just do it myself again. I've never layered my own hair in my 33 years, but has always been the look I've always wanted to achieve at home. and because of you, I've been doing just fine over two years. I have always had my hair short (like pixie cut short) since I can layer it I love long hair on myself. ... sorry for rambling, but in short, I do deeply appreciate you taking the time to make this video as well uploading it to share with the rest of us.

You know what? I just tried this... removing around 4-5 inches from my hair because they were thin and not well layered. It's by far the best results I have seen, better than any haircuts I had in salons. To be honest, I decided years ago to cut my hair myself, because I never got great results for the price. Your method is fantastic! I adopt it and it will be easy to maintain in the future! Thanks so much for sharing.

THANK YOU. I tried this today on my thick and unwashed hair and It looks amazing. It took less than 5 minutes and both sides of my hair is now equal (were not before the cut). I have tried following a lot of self cut KZread tutorials and they are really good but a few too many steps not to have remember for the next time and I’ve just been cutting my hair much shorter than I want it. THIS tutorial is fast. Easy. And I can’t imagine forgetting it. And no more pausing and getting wrong, so so simple. I was so close to having to go and pay for a salon cut, which would be expensive, and, I’ve always begrudged paying as I’ve never been happy with their outcome. Now washed, I love this cut. Big thumbs up, again thank you for putting this up on KZread.

Sounds like a bunch of angry hairstylists on here mad that ppl can actually cut their own hair better than going to spend time and money at a salon.Who cares if it's not professional technique or equipment. The point is saving money. It's a quick easy tutorial that obviously works due to the many positive comments. The only negative ones I've seen were from hairstylists trying to shame a person out of saving money.

Seriously, not everyone wants or needs a professional haircut. Some haircuts are easy af to cut, and if you can do it without spending money, why shouldn't you? I don't understand hairdressers who get so mad and take it personal like they're the only one who can put scissors to hair. All of the times I've went to a hairdresser, simply because it's the norm in society, it has NEVER turned out how I've wanted it and been a BIG waste of money, I can cut my hair way better than they ever have.

Ok sooooo I tried this the exact same way and it turned out wonderful. Even better I didn't pay a penny. :) I'm all smiles now. My hair looks amazing because my naturally wavy hair isn't weighed down, which my hair look a mess. I certainly recommend this to everyone. Mostly because it's easy, you don't need no one to help, and it's free lol Another thing, I read a few comments in the comment section about how it's bad to comb your hair when wet. Ummmmmm i recall that everytime I got my hair cut at a salon it was fully wet, sooooo how is this any worse?? I mean if you only do it once every couple of months how is it bad. I honestly feel this is the best cut I ever had. Good job!!! :) thank you!!!

  • @misskim2058

    @misskim2058

    3 жыл бұрын

Agreed. You’d have a hell of a time combing it out when dry, with snarls that only become less manageable than wet hair. Duh, (to whoever said not to), you have to comb it when it’s wet. Better not to BRUSH it fast and hard (impatiently) when wet, or with a cheaper brush that tears at the hair, but it’s a no-brainer you have to comb or brush it out when wet, working from the ends up until it’s smooth and one can go in one long stroke from scalp to ends...anyone who had a mom that didn’t know this growing up, one who didn’t believe in using detangler, and always started at the scalp, ripping the hair from the head and making more and more snarls knows the foolishness and misery of not starting with the ends. Like life, if we hit those little problems (“wet”-when we first notice them, -before they “dry”-get set hard in place), and before using force in all the wrong places, we can preempt the creation of much bigger, more painful situations and experiences in our lives.

This is super helpful, thank you so much. It came out awesome. I stopped going to salons - my last 3 visits at 3 different salons were all REALLY unpleasant... third last time stylists were being incredibly catty to each other... switched salons and had a stylist make fun of my cut (yes, I had cut it myself, I don't have $60 lying around for every 6 weeks!) what she thought was behind my back... the last visit I finally had a good experience with a stylist and he was working his last day there, everyone else didn't even want to touch my hair (I'd been stupid and tried to lighten my own hair). I'd rather look a bit silly and save the money and at least not feel like I'm paying to get side-eyed.

My hair is also real fine and I have been needing it cut bad for awhile. I wanted to do it myself but was afraid I'd f**k it up big time. After watching this, I washed my hair and sat down with what I needed in front of the tv and basically cut my hair right along with your video. I have been wanting to go shorter but I figured I'll start with an inch or two and see how it goes first. AMAZING! The dead shit is gone and it looks great and feels healthier. Gasoline in Nevada is $5.50 and the price of food has never been higher. What you have created here is a classic haircut, one that fits most faces at most ages. Still loving this way of cutting my hair. I do some point cutting to make mine a little shaggier since I have really wavy hair. But using your instructions has worked for over 2 years now, my hair is about 8" longer and people frequently tell me they love how it looks without soliciting their opinion. Hope you have found the job you love. If not make more videos!

Very helpful. After watching many different videos, I came back to this one because it made the most sense to me for my 'at home' needs. Thank you.

My hair isn't long enough for this method, but during Covid 19, what a great idea!
