Thank you! I'd fashioned my own before in a similar way, but that was over a decade ago, and I didn't have the same materials on hand when I spotted babies in my balloon molly tank tonight. There were 4 survivors and they're safe now, thanks to you. I just happened to have bought soda for the first time in a month too! The bottle worked perfectly!

I have an Angel fish that looks exactly like that one, and had it in a tank with a breeder tank inside. Some 20 odd guppy fry in there, and one day I left the top off. 3 AM in the morning, the Angel leapt out and splunked into the little breeder tank. Sheer terror and total carnage, poor fry had no place to hide at all, because I took out the slotted divider, and that monster ate every one.

@@cherylmockotr it was tragically funny I guess; that devil fish turning all those fry into a giant poop. I can't decide if she was actually smart enough to know that she could jump out of the water into the breeder tank, or just did it by accident because she got spooked for some reason, and then found herself stuck inside with a load of Happy Meals.

(not as trap but as small home for my tiny family) :) .. thank you sir. keep on designing more new things like this one it seems as decoration as well ;) ...

Thanku, I’ll make one tomorrow. Atm I’m using a measure jug hanging over edge of tank but it doesn’t get glow through with approx 8 fry that I managed to siphon out, the rest if each batch of fry I just left in tank and for nature to take its course but after a water change n clean if tank I doubt any would be left...who knows? Mind you, my sparkling gouramis ray are only 2 mm in size to may get thru holes. They’re incredibly tiny and are from two batches that hatched in same tank within two days of each other. Only had the 5 gouramis for 6 days and two pairs spawned . Nether the less I will make up a fry holder even the tiniest if holes will be better than no holes. Cheers n take care

What type of bottle did you use? I have 3 babies that survived somehow and I put them in a container. It gets dirty frequently though, and I want them to get used to tank water. Problem is, I have a very aggressive molly that picks on the other one from time to time and I'm worried it might stress out the fry. Also, the water level is being greatly affected at the moment and I constantly have to do water changes and putting in pH up in there. I have 2 female mollies in a 10 gallon tank, so it wouldn't be that much waste, but I guess I got them too early to let bacteria build up first to level out the pH levels

Thankyou so so much. I had no previous experience in this, and really had no idea what to do. Successfully recovered 12 numbers of fry. Thanks a lot. The best part is works with small aquariums too. Edit after 5 days: Within the bottle make some hiding place for fry, example you can add artificial stems of plant, two to three stems would be sufficient.

I had to net them and only caught 5, 4 died over night but 1 is 2 weeks old now and doing good. he is in 1 gallon of a 10 divided. but I like this idea very much! do you think it would be ok to use a 2 liter and allow the moms to give birth in there? I am not looking to breed but I bought pregnant fish, and plan to keep the survivors.

This looks like a holding tank not a trap. A trap catches something automatically and won't let it out. It looks like you have to net the fry yourself for your idea. so it's a diy fry breeder, not a trap.

A “fry trap” in the fish hobby means that it lets in fry but not other fish that might eat them. The fry don’t leave because of their fear of their parents. But some plants in it and the fry will go to it for refuge.

Big surprise, I know... :/I need to catch the maturing little guys so they don't eat the tiny newbies. It's quite "difficult" - for lack of better words. I think I'm going to try this "fry trap" I think it's a great idea!!!Another thing I thought of was to use a breeding basket in the fry tank, placing my very pregnant molly in it and making tiny holes in the bottom that they could hopefully drop through & join the other fry!Any thoughts on that idea???

Can you make a tutorial DIY how to make breeder trap for unhatched eggs using a somewhat creative divider in the same tank so we won't need to transfer and buy another tank for the mother to lay eggs..

I feel it is a trap. The fry are swimming in through the little holes and then cannot get out. It is helpful for those who are trying to isolate fry who were born in a community tank.

i just bought 3 balloon bellys from petsmart today, just learned about them and i now know i bought 2 females and 1 male. yikes. I have them with neon tetras, 2 tiger tetras, and i bought them with a baby plecostomus. I am pretty sure at least 1 of the females are prego... i dont want them to get eaten... not sure what to do with them but i will find them homes... my question is did the fish get through those tiny holes themselves or did you put them in manually? I know they are mostly born overnight so i am worried they will all be goners in the am. OH and after they get pregnant once, they always are pregnant right? Should i bring the male back and switch him for a female? he seems pretty aggressive towards 1 of the females in particular. Will that stop?

I just spent two hours fishing fry out from the back of my aquarium where the filter goes. One just died an hour after that. None of these videos on guppies talk about how long it takes for a fish to finish giving birth. They’re all just literally “look what I can do!” Like we’re all 6 here on KZread!

There are 3 different options. You can either have the mother give birth in a breeding box beforehand so she doesn't kill the fry or in another ceperate tank with enough plants for the fry to hide in. After giving birth (would say that it takes about max. 12 hours for platy fish for example) you can move the mother fish back in the original tank and place the fry in this selfmade 'fry tank'. Another option is to place the mother before giving birth in this selfmade 'fry tank' and move her out again after birth (possibility of fry being eaten by the mother). The last option is to let the motber give birth in the original tank and catch all the fry and place them in there.

@@alwaysyouramanda If you can't find how long the birth of your fish takes, I would recommend keeping an eye on the mother fish. The easiest way to know if birth is done, is to count how many fry are there. If the number of fry doesn't change in 2 hours, it's a high possibility that there won't come more fry and you can move the motherfish out.
