DIY Air Driven Fry Separator
I actually got this as a viewer request, but thought it fit here better as I have never tried this kind of build before. Here's my attempt at separating guppy fry from mom before she eats them.

This is such intricate work!
that's awesome thanx for building my request. I had heard from some old timers a trap they could use in the tank similar to this ive never been able to get mine to work effectively. turning it into a breeder box definatley gets it working. I hadn't thought of that mine was just a DIY Lift tube made from an old HOB tube in the corner of the tank pumping water into a mesh breeder box but in all the months I used that I only ever found three fry in the trap.

Awesome idea! I've been wracking my brains for a way to do this in order to separate out low-form shrimp zoas, so they can be transferred easily to a brackish/saltwater setup.

You really need to market these things. I am newly retired, figuring where, and will get back into tanks once established. Using you all for tips, tricks, and general fish ideas. These (and others) are great ideas, but most of us will never have the tools to recreate them. Great vids though,... Keep them coming. Waiting patiently to see this working.

First time I see this, have read about it. Another build my LFS told me about they use to have for guppies back in the days is to put a 2 angle pieces to leave just a long slit below the female mother guppy in the tank, again a tank inside a tank. Might be a nice build also.
I see fishman, I click video, I press like button 👍, awesome idea and vid man!

Cool design. Been thinking on something similar, well something with the basic concept of moving the guppy fry away from mom with water flow similar.

Bro your on point
Nice. You could even make something that just sat in the tank and was a fry trap, fill it with the Java moss and something for them to eat with the sponge to keep them from going through and output tube and another inlet that would just suck them up and keep the bigger fish out and keep them from swimming back out of the hole Until they were big enough To swim against the current and escape and hopefully be enough by then to survive the other fish

So many ways to do this for sure. Thanks as always for sharing your thoughts and for watching
I've done a similar thing, just with fewer skills. :) I used a matten filter to divide a tank in half. Put mom on the intake side of the airlift tube. You can stack a few smooth rocks around the tube. The fry then swim for cover in the rocks and get sucked up by the airlift tube and transported to the safe side of the tank.

Have you tried putting a control valve on the air tube? For it would allow you to control the flow of the air current and make it easier to set the life tube up

Place an air valve on the tubing and dial the air flow down. That should make the flow less vigorous for the mom, but still strong enough to pull the fry up and out of mom's way.

@@Shaden0040 Good idea!
I used to do something similar with matten filter. Take pvc and make an L shape, put a hole in the lift tube for air line and cover the hole in the main tank with rock or moss (anything big enough to keep adults out but fry to swim into). Basically mom would give birth, fry would swim towards the rock/moss/"cover" and get sucked into the pvc and deposited on the other side of the matten filter.

Great idea, building a acrylic box to save fry from mom. 👍 As someone already mentioned add a air valve to fine tune air flow thus affecting water flow. I would remove the java moss . I would add a few stones in the bottom of the chamber with the mom over the slots. Hopefully the fry would seek refuge around the rock/pebble and get sucked up thru the slats with less water flow. This would help mom relax and not over work her in the chamber before giving birth. Are you willing to make me one. I would pay you, so the I could test it out?
