    The tank on the right had the advantage of having bacteria already on the surfaces of the lava rock, substrate of the plants, and walls(it looks as if they weren't cleaned spotless like the sponge filter tank).

    hi, i want to build a 4ft by 4ft by 45cm high tank, what thickness glass do you recommend for the sides and the bottom.

  • @FishmanEricRussell
    @FishmanEricRussell9 күн бұрын

    The most important dimension is the column of water being supported. Your tank is just under 18". With the 4' of free span, I would recommend, 10 mm glass

    Hey Eric, so I was thinking about that hornwort. Do you think the flow from the filter bubbling through it could have something to do with it? I wouldn’t know why but that is one difference between the two. Look forward to the white clouds and culture videos 😁👍

  • @FishmanEricRussell

    Don’t let those Killis get too old man!! It’s been real super hot here in Cleveland too man we don’t really use our air even though we have it most days. It’s almost unbearable with the humidity but at night at least it gets enough cool down the nice part is we haven’t used to use any electricity to heat the fish tanks or to cool off the house so we have hardly any electric bill at all, especially with the solar panels, but we’ll see what the rest of at the beginning we had close to 100° for about a week and we had to use the air. There was no way around it. We hope you’re having a great start to your week Fishman!

    please do the more precise test with glass to glass as my mate swears after seeing this that black is stronger than clear. personally i dont beluieve it. the very first silicone for aquariums was 100% clear silicone though its not quite clear. all the new ones stem from that one. the black one by default has an adative so really should be at least slightly weaker or at least the same. the clear is way easier to use as it gives you about 5 minutes to work with it and the black gives you hardly any time. i suggest 2 polished flat edges glued togeter of the same size glass and a 2mm gap to get a better measure of each colour. thank you .

  • @FishmanEricRussell
    @FishmanEricRussell16 күн бұрын

    Thanks for your interest in this. This all started from my experiences with commercial tanks my clients were using. I found that black silicone hid the stress lines that appear in silicone when under it is under uneven pressure. I had to figure out a new way of telling if a tank was going to fail. With clear it was obvious. This is the reason commercial tanks go this way. It's purely cosmetic. Unfortunately, at the moment, I'm very busy and it may be a while before I can get to this.

    Yep, not many videos showing how to culture from the wild, just a lot of people saying to do it. I'm thinking northern waters are better for this. I'm in the south east and every pond or river I take from, I end up getting mostly planaria, hydra and dragon fly nymphs. No scuds or other desirable cutures. Of course, snails but I already have thousands of those. Would you ever risk getting planaria in an aquarium? I've heard mixed opinions on this.

  • @FishmanEricRussell

    Hello, I have many buckets now of live fish food (ducks make a constant supply easy) - daphnia, seed shrimp, cyclops, midgefly larvae, worms of various types, ect... Always something new to see:) And yes, there are pros and cons of this method, but that's life for you. I have learned that we learn through doing, and my comfort level changes through experience. One thing ive been wondering, though , is how much to feed? How much do the fish actually need? I've had such an abundance that i have the tendency to feed alot at one time. I've been doing a "feast and famin" thing, with a few days between feeding more than they could possibly eat in a day. How much do you feed?

  • @FishmanEricRussell
    @FishmanEricRussell16 күн бұрын

    Love your attitude! The nice thing about live food from these sorts of things, is it all lives in our aquariums. Everything I feed finds a refuge somewhere in a given tank and can be found even if I haven't fed in quite some time. The fish will eventually root them out in some cases, but they do persist. I feed regular food and use live food as a treat. The only fish that get daily live food are fry and fingerlings.

    I still like having Duck Weed in my tank it reminds me if I've got behind on maintenance. I don't think I'll have it for much longer as I'm moving on the last few fish removing the heater getting a few Minnows 2 nice pet Gold fish and 4-5 tiny Carp that I'll grow and release into local pond's that have been annihilated because of the release of Mink by activists and exploded in numbers as most waters where well stocked. There's no sign of Mink in my area now and a group of us former members of a angling group are making plans to restock the pond's and their is even plans to farm breed and release our Brown Trout from our area. They aren't officially recognised as being anything special but they are in the late 1950s the river got contaminated and groups of people saved as many fish as possible by moving them into the mill pond's and raised the money to buy new stock to release there's no records of where they originally came from and after decades of crossbreeding with the native one's they have obvious differences that set them apart from UK Brown Trout. Before the Mink you would see dozens of 8-12" Trout in every swim on the river and 5-7lb fish where around it's now rare to see the odd 8" one
