    I got rid of my run flats on my 06 BMW 330I and bought Michelin Super sports, and wow, the difference in ride, noise, and handling, was impressive. I'll never go back to run flats and the super sports are amazing tires

    The 4 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires that I put on my 370Z sport coupe cost about $1500, including alignment, 245/40R10-F & 275/35R19-R. Your suspension will be more responsive with the lighter non run-flat tires.

    Ran MPSS 245/40r18 97Y on my Volvo V70 for four years, if heading for Autobahn might take it up to 38, normally 36-37 and she bloody heavy...

    I have a solid set of Hankooks on my Mini & I run them at about 35/36 PSI, never had a problem. Smooth ride as well. Awesome video mate!

    Glad to see you went for these tyres in the end! Perform well day to day and did incredible at a torrential Brandshatch. Never driven them around Goodwood so weather dependent it'll be these or the Toyo R888Rs! I tend to drop the pressure in these to 26-28PSI for track though as they did get up to temp and were around 33psi back in the pits 👍

    Good report. I had horrible Dunlop run-flats on my BMW 520d. I thought it was a good idea until I drove the car for a few miles. As soon as I could, I swapped them out for a set of Michelin Primacy 3's, as they have excellent reviews. I also bought a spacesaver spare from BMW. The difference was quite dramatic - a far more settled and quieter ride. I was very pleased to discover that my new Peugeot 3008 SUV is fitted with Primacy 3's and this time I was able to choose a full size alloy and spare as an option for £100. The pattern/location of any tread wear should indicate if they are over inflated. I don't know how far Sainsbury's is from your house, but tyre pressure should be checked when the tyres are cold.

    Thanks for the reply. Its only a couple of miles so I don't think it would have made that much difference. I have an inflator at home but it's much better at increasing the pressure and not so good at decreasing it !

    Had the same dilemma a few months back on my R56, in the end I stuck with run flats because living in the country with hedges always being cut it was quite likely I'd get punctures. After watching your video i wish I swapped. Would love a less harsh ride. Oh well, next time. Great video

    Have just made the same changes to my R56 this weekend, gone with Dunlop sport maxx RT, was going for Michelin PSS but bit to costly for me. However I completely agree the difference is night and day, for any driving enthusiast this is a must modification!

    I dont have money this , but some of the dealers I've run into are told to put the recommended tire pressure stamped on the tire. That's all good but the Manufacturer of the vehicle has put a lot of testing into the tire , tire pressurer and the car. To know what should be the right pressurer should be. I never run what the dealer what's to put in there.. I loved you video and your car. Ok, it's been a year now so what have you learn about the tire you choose. I just learned the my mothers car is suppose to have Michelin Pax Tires.

    Hi Peter, I have added a reply to Bluemeanie's comment further down, but forgot to add, I've just had Corky the Coupe mot'd & end of warranty checked. I did do my customary 'inspection' just to see amongst other things, whether they had altered my tyre pressure. Nope, still on 33psi front & 35psi rear. All of my (6) previous MINI's have been set to that, run flats or conventional. Never had uneven wear & handling characteristics have been fine. I currently have Continental R/F tyres, a bit hard but they stick like the proverbial you know what to a blanket. Great video & all the best. Geof

    I love the Michelin Pilot Super Sports tires, I remember when I added them on to my 7 series I had no problem hitting 155 MPH (250KM) very proud moment for me!

    Ditched my run flats after owning my R56 for almost two years. (I had to wait to run the tread down on all four tyres.) Did a ton of research. At the time (May 2015) the best tyre for me was falken ZIEX ZE914 ecorun. I run then on 2.5 (36psi). I drive on them all year round and think they have excellent grip. Much better ride quality too 😊

    I have Falken FK510 on my Golf GTi Mk7. Replaced Bridgestones which it came on new and which were not great. Really rate the Falken much better than the Bridgestones in wet and dry . Excellent value as well

    My dad is happy with Michelin Pilots on his '02 Vette. Much smoother than the run flats he had previously. I'm thinking of ditching the run flats on my '07 328i.

    Also own a MINI Roadster S (R59). Ditched the o.e. run flats after about a months driving in favor of Continental Extreme Contact DW tires. Enjoyed your video...I run about 37psi on my R59. Couple of pointers.....new tires require ~100+ miles to wear off tire manufacturer's mold release compound before true tire grip is achievable. Also...you've driven quite a few miles after new tire install to then check pressures and reduce them. Realize "hot" tires will read high...always adjust tire pressures on cold tires.

    I just bought a Z4 and one of the first ‘mods’ I did was to ditch the runflats. The difference is night and day, the car is so much smoother quieter more comfortable ride and the handling is way improved too.

    @@paulharkin1212 Mine has 18" alloys. I got some Goodyear Asy 3s. You should do it, I don't know many who have made the change and regretted it.

    I recently brought a 2011 R60 auto (today) which has continental run flats (guy at garage said he put new tyres on) but the recent Mot last week says the near side front and rear tyres are cracking so when I next get a bit of money I think I will be going to ProTyre/Micheldever to get them changed thanks for this been a great video to watch

    Brilliant video just what i have been looking for , I recently bought a Mercedes GLA 200 “ used” with run flats and was shocked by the hard ride , i love the car and drive, but i am struggling with the ride comfort 🙁 i, like you cannot believe the tire pressure on these 42psi !!!! Hard as rock , i did by mistake reduce the pressure and the grip handling and ride was better but for safety decided to put back to factory recommendations. Unfortunately the tires are pretty new so in a quandary as to shell out for standard or keep the run flats for a little longer , I’ll see if i still love the car in a few months. But great information and once the run flats are worn a little more I’ll most definitely put standard tires on . Just one question is it safe to reduce tire pressure from factory settings ??     Love my new 4s on my Golf R! The road noise is greatly reduced and seem to have a ton of grip just like the PSSS. My Golf R recommends 38psi.

    I run my mini r56 FJCW (Conti Sport 5's NONE run flat) at 32 PSI - I just drive day to day town and some motorway. Wear is fine, ride is much better, grip is fantastic. I remember doing the first drive going from run flat to normal - the difference was crazy. The only notable difference is I run 215/45/17

    @@patrickli804 I used to run an emergency compressed air repair kit. It comes in a single cylinder and will inflate and send repair gunk in to the tyre. I also have breakdown insurance! My preference would be to have a space saver spare wheel!

    I use Pilot Super Sport ZP run flats in my C7 Corvette. I had Pilot 4S in my Nissan 370Z, but it had a spare. I live in the middle of nowhere Texas so I don't want to go without a spare or run flats. The cost is about $1500.00 every 20,000 miles. I am hoping the Corvette is easier on front tires than the 370Z. You cannot rotate tires as the fronts and the rears are quite different sizes. Recommened factory pressure on the C7 Corvette Stingray is only 30 PSI. They recommend about 35 or so for track days. I wouldn't run them at more than about 32 PSI , That is what I ran my Pilot SS in the 370Z .

    I have a 525d MSport with 245 40 19 on the front and 275 35 19 on the rears, We ripped off the RunFlat Tires as they were causing the alloy wheels to crack on the inner rims, W also have a slimline spare wheel in the boot, since taking off the RunFlats my car is a lot quieter, Smoother and a lot more forgiving on bumps in the road, I feel a lot more safe with regular tires too, my mini cooper R50 was running 32psi on non runflats too,

    Pete anytime you ask the dealership they will tell you to fallow the mfg recommendation always . A little background I use PSS on all cars in the family a 328i, 330zhp, M3, and ( 2 ) M5’s and my daughters 2015 Mini. As a vague pressure a lot of people say is 35 psi as that is the pressure stamped on tires. The pressure recommendation on the car is the pressure the engineers came up with for the tires the car was built with based on only the vehicle, now that you changed to a different type of tire that mfg. pressure is no longer valid. Now Michelin puts 35 psi on the tire this is a base line, now figure in your weight and other added weight at normal everyday driving, drive the normal then drive Like a hooligan sharp fast hard cornering, hard acceleration if you like how it feels then you found your pressure but try a 5 psi higher And lower to feel the difference and adjust accordingly. Also keep an eye on wear thicker in the middle is under inflated thinner in the middle is over inflated . My experience is I run at 40 psi in summer and 35 in more rainy months here is San Diego, Calif. It’s mostly summer pressure. I just replaced all four tires on my M5 at discount tire with Michelin PSS for $2,227.95 US Dollars or 1699.20 quid that includes taxes, fees and certs. No alignment . Ouch !

    992 TURBO S good point I suspect tire manufacturers should know better what the optimum performance pressure should be. Car manufacturers recommend higher pressure in order get better MPG!

    Yep, don't skimp on tyres, oil, fuel or servicing intervals. In fact the manufacturers recommend 15,000 km oil changes for my car but I use synthetic oil and change it between 6-7000km.

    The tire shop told me 56 PSI! The charts say a max of 50 PSI. I keep reading as that sounds so high to me, glad to hear I am not mental and you too think they are set too high also.

    Great Video buddy! I run 37psi in my rears and 35 in the fronts :-) Get yourself a tyre pressure gauge, those Petrol station ones are usually inaccurate. Cheers man

    I drive a Bimmer F30, 225/45 n 255/40, both r 18". After various experiments, I personally feel running 35/38 psi work best, also absolutely agree with buying own decent tire gauge as most gas stations' gauges r inaccurate due to lack of care + highly usages.

    Check tire temps to work out pressures. High rear pressures may help the car turn for you on the twisty roads

    @@patrickli804 due to the mot centres being closed here due to faulty car lifts, they pardoned my car until the end of July so I thought I would keep the old tyres on and get what ever I could out of them, so the new tyres are still in the shed and I went and bought an emergency wheel with tools, takes a fair bit of boot space but it doesn't bother me 👍

    A drag race trick to figure out the psi you want is to draw a line across the tread with chalk. Drive a short distance and look at the line. Over inflated the outside chalk goes away first and so on. I would think you want the tires (tyres) to be at operating temp.

    Despite the relatively harsh ride, I'm sticking with runflats on my 3 series. They just give me piece of mind that I'm not going to be stranded on the side of the road. I actually experienced the benefit of runflats a few months ago when the left front got punctured on a day out with the family and I was able to continue and get home. The steering felt a bit soggy and the tyre pressure monitor wasn't happy, I had to drive slower, but I didn't get stranded. The car now has runflat Bridgestone Potenzas on the front, which actually feel a lot better than the Michelin Pilot Sports they replaced. Better grip and slightly more compliant.

    stubones agreed! I have a E90 3 series and I can put up with the harsh ride to get the high speed stability and immediate turn in steering response with the stiff sidewalls of the run flats. 3 series suspension is calibrated to run flats so other tires give a mushy steering feel. The added safety of the run flats to punctures at highway speed is a bonus. Never had a sidewall blow out or bubble with them. Unfortunately they are 2x the price now.

    I changed mine as soon as I bought the car to the Michelin PSS. I have now changed these for some brand new Michelin Pilot Sport PS4, and they are absolutely brilliant! Btw, I've heard from BMW that they might have to ditch the runflats on new cars, due to environmental concerns (apparently they lower your mpg by a noticable amount). Oh and man, how cheap are those tyres in the UK? In Norway I paid the equivalent of 1300 pounds for all 4. And that was without alignment. They are 19 inch though.

    Hi Ped, I share your views about the superior ride quality of normal vs. run flat tyres. I run some standard tyres on my Roadster SD, too. You just have to be aware that if you have a puncture and immediate pressure loss, you will probably lose your car. My wife's R50 Cooper was hit by a bolt (yes, a bolt) - probably from a lorry, about 10 cm long. Another lorry had trown it up driving over it. It hit the side wall of the tyre when she turned onto the autobahn. It was a sound like a shot and it punctured the tyre with the head first. The guys at the tyre service later could not believe it but we have pictures and the bolt still as proof. As the car was hit in the middle of a right turn at about 30km/h on the left rear wheel, the car would have turned around and crashed into the barrier. We had another puncture on the Autobahn a couple of years later on snow tyres at 150 km/h, again on a rear wheel. Both times, nothing happened and the car could be driven to the tyre service. Otherwise we'd have at least lost the R50 in the first event. Not to speak of possible injury in the second incident. And bear in mind what you do when you break down somewhere with a puncture. You won't get anywher without a spare tyre or an emergency kit on the car. That's not to say it has no advantages to use standard tyres but the risk should be carefully weighed by the average driver who probably hasn't got as much experience as yourself with your track days and all. Would like to see more of Ruby Roadster... Keep up the good work!

    Thanks for the comment. I know that the risk of a blow out is higher, but then it's now the same as any of the cars I have owned before the Mini (my first experience of run-flats). I have really good breakdown cover and will rely on that. Foam is only really any good when you return to the car and the tyre has gone down. If the tyre goes while you are driving, by the time you stop the tyre is normally too knackered for the foam to work. I've got a couple of cool thing coming up with the Mini so stay tuned :-)

    The reason the run flat pressures are so high is to prevent the car riding purely on the side wall. It pushes the centre of the tyre out to balance out wear and somewhat compensate for the over stiff side walls. You don't need anywhere near that pressure on your super sports. Even on my old scirocco r which was maybe 150kg heavier than your car, they were 38psi. I'd suggest 36 is probably the highest id run on a mini.

    Run Flat Tyres on BMW cars, is that something to do with the fact that you can’t repair a tubeless tyre in Germany, Hence the number of part warn tyres for sale here in the UK. Also, as you know it saves weight and saves money in the production costs.

    They had more tread than it looked and the stickers are well out of my view, just look worse fro that camera angle :-)

    Last time I hit a bad pothole like that I had to get the wheel repaired due to buckling - it would show up as a vibration around 120 km/h. My tyre bloke put it on his balance machine and showed me how out of round it was. Luckily a local engineering shop was able to true it up for a pretty small cost. I run Michelin Pilot Sport 4's at 36psi, but my car is huge, RWD, weighs 1850kg's, and has 500bhp so probably not in any way comparable to your mini :-)

    I’m definitely going to change the run flats on my MINI, had to replace a tyre that was basically brand new because of a nail, and got told that repairing a run flat tyre is illegal. Technically you can put a brand new run flat tyre on drive out, get a nail in it, and then need to replace a whole brand new tyre, at £130 each, disheartening tbh.

    Very interested to see this as I have run a tyre shop. I would have been interested to see you weight both tyres as run flats are heavier, so I thought you might find the engine spin up a little quicker ( like a lighter fly wheel ) Text book job though with a wheel alignment and new tyres.

    Thoughts on whether suspension needs to be retuned when switching from run-flat a/k/a run-rough to regular tyres? BMW supposedly tunes my X-1 suspension to deal with harsh ride from solid sidewalls.

    Hi Pete, is all still good with the non run flat tyres?, noticed the michelins you had fitted were '88' load as opposed to '84' on my run flats (cooper s factory fitted jcw wheels) have you had any problems with losing pressure or anything like that? Great video and very informative, thanks .

    I got a wheel alignment the other day in my 3 series with Pirelli Cinterato P7 run flats and they pumped them to 40 psi all round. They feel light and responsive but a tad harsh. Still undecided about having 40 psi though 🤔

    Ken Lawton Stick to the pressures recommended by bmw if you’re on the stock run flats. You risk damaging your alloys if you hit a pothole.

    these tires came with my volvo s70 T5 .... they wore out so fast . I replaced them with a longer lasting brand . not a fan , and they are prone to sidewall damage when you get the low profile .

    Very useful - the right tyres are so important for getting the right drive, and being able to stop safely when needed. I am just getting a used petrol electric hybrid - thankfully with decent almost new tyres - it got me thinking it would be interesting to see how hybrid cars can benefit from something other than the OE tyres supplied from the manufacturer. Mine is a BMW 225xe - it comes with run flats as many BM's do, but not specific EV tyres. While hybrids are generally that bit heavier are run flats the best answer I wonder, and what about the new EV tyres - eg Michelin Pilot Sports now have an EV version?

    @@PetrolPed Yes - because in a hybrid or electric car you become more aware of road noise than in a traditional combustion engine and tend to enjoy the much lower noise levels.

    My 320d BMW is on continentals rears 2.3 front 2.2 bar I know different car but seems a bit high for a mini I will have to check with continental now on there recommendation

    run a cooper s countyman on non run flats 34psi front 32 rear; suits me. when i bought it it had 43/41; skippy, and the back was sliding out on spirited running

    I have a JCW and have also thought 44 PSI is too much. I'm still running the Dunlop runflats. I've experimented with type pressures from 35 PSI to 44. I've come to the conclusion that it makes very little difference, as the runflats have such a stiff sidewall. I'd have though non runflats would have been at their best at 32 PSI

    I have just returned from a long drive with a nice bit of twisty road. I cannot speak highly enough of the new boots on my Mini. Just gutted I didn't do it earlier...the grip is AWESOME !

    Well that's the first mod next exhaust then brakes then coilovers then engine map👍 . I know what you mean regarding the noise levels had mine changed within a week and won't go back.     1BLUEMEANIE Great idea for a MINI chat segment. I'm on my seventh since they were launched. Used to belong to New Mini Severns, great group, really interactive web site. Sadly they seem to have disappeared and there's no one local to me that's into MINI's. My JCW Coupe is going to be needing front tyres soon. I had Toyo Proxies on a previous JCW hatch & they made such a difference. Maybe I'll take a look at the Michelins Peter. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Geof.

    I have the Hankook runflats, absolutely amazing with steering and what a joy knowing I won't be robbed and/or killed next to the road while trying to change a tyre, some countries are not safe to stop at all and even if it is safe, good luck trying to change a tyre on a highway and hope you don't get run over.

    Max psi is 50 on the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Try adjusting them to 38 psi. More balance between soft & stiff.

    I've got an R59 with 215/35 18 Goodyear Asymmetrics. The pressures I use are 37 psi in the fronts and 33 psi in the rears. If you've got the time and inclination, you can calculate the correct pressures by measuring them with cold tyres, then remeasuring when the tyres are warm (maybe 45 mins mixed driving). What you're looking for is a 4 psi increase.

    I can see why you would need to inform them about the tyre change, but can't see why they need to know about the foam you are using. Let's face it, most of the time it doesn't work anyway ! The new tyres have a 88Y speed rating.

    Petrol Ped I think you mis understood me. Tyre foam choice is for my knowledge not the insurers! I have a 120d M sport on non run flats that the dealer told me was supplied for new like that so it has a mouse system but wondered what system you'd opted for? Thanks

    Ped bit of advise needed was looking at changing tyres to normal from run flats but two friends of mine have said you need to inform insurance company that your going from run flats to normal tyres and I presume it would be vice versa as people they know have had problems with insurance cover.?????

    And also when changing old tyres for new they are telling me you need to put the same make back on because that's what the manufacturer recommends but theft doesn't sound right to me .

    I agree & tq - 40+ is mind-boggling - I run 35/33 front/back based on the inner door chart recommending higher front / lower on the rear - anyone else following these ‘staggered’ pressures pls? Tq

    RF Tires are noisy, weighs 30% more, and lasts only 15k miles. Yes, pressure 36 is the ideal one for smooth drive. I did change Bridgestone RFT to Pirelli steel radial and experiencing great drive.

    Greetings. I was talking to a tire specialist. And he told me that cars that have runflat have shock absorbers and springs with different ratings. Because they combine the hardness of the runflat tires. If you put normal tires on the car. With the weaker flank, the car will perform worse. Because you will notice it as it slides in the curves. It does not maintain the trajectory as well as with the runflats due to the fact that the electronic systems of the car have to work much more. What do you think about this?. Thanks.     Nope, nothing unusual. They still create road noise at speed but probably less than the run-flats.

    43.5 psi sounds like the top end of any range, on any street tire any silly person would want to drive around on. I've never gone over 37 on performance low profile tire, usually 34-35 get's nicely sticky and smooth. What sadist are those recommendations for anyway? lol

    Forgot something: I saw your wind deflector in the rear of the video. Have you exchanged the net for perspex or glass? Would love to learn more as I have also fitted the deflectors in the hubs like you. They are terrific! I still can't stand the net in the middle though and have never fitted it as it's just too ugly in my eyes to bear it. So a perspex insert into the standard frame would be definitely an improvement! Please share what you did.

    The perspex in the roll over hoops are Dobblestein Windscreens. A brilliant invention. I too am not a fan of the central mesh screen and maybe one day I will get around to changing it !     I in fact have the Dobblesteins fitted in my Roadster. That was the first thing I bought after seeing your video. Nice guy by the way. To me it seemed that in the video the MINI wind deflector between the left and right hoop had perspex fitted instead of the net. But that might be because the camera can't properly see the net. I'm looking for something less visible than the standard deflector but with a classy and easy to remove fit. I was thinking of fitting perspex to mine inside the original frame, but I'm hesitant to pull it apart. That's why I was wondering...

    Why did you get an alignment before the new tires? Just seems wrong. Ditched the run-flats 2 weeks after buying my BMW 335 and sold them. Bought a new spare from eBay that goes to another model BMW throw in a small scissor jack and a 18" breaker bar and good to go. But I have room for it. 36psi sounds about right. If the tires wear properly no problem. Over inflated will wear the center out and under inflated will wear the outside edges.

    I guess the alignment first is so that they can give you the cost of repairs (if needed) before you buy the tyres - in case you don't have the money for both at that moment? Money can be tight for a lot of people, and that way they can sort out the alignment, replace bushings, bearings, tie rod ends, whatever...before forking out for your new boots.

    @@1061shrink1061 nonsense... some cheap shitty tyre alignment machines clamp on to the tyres. If they are then rather old and worn to the old wrong settings then will read wrongly. I agree with you that the decent ones do clamp onto the rims however. The rims again will only give the same reading the badly worn tyres make them display due to postionioning

    Interesting over here in the US alignment is usually done after new tires installed, to me that makes more sense when all four corners are even?

    You are aligning the wheels not the tyres so it doesn't really make a difference which you do first 👍

    Petrol Ped I noticed that UK wheel alignment process is different, Your car was lifted, in the US they don’t the car is drive ontology rig with four moveable plates

    I find my R56 MCS very harsh in runflats, but they have too much tread on them for me to consider dropping over £400 on replacing them all.

    On my mini jcw 2018 I noticed that the rotors on the back are smaller than the fronts. is that normal and if not what size rotor do I need. thanks

    I am driving b 200 run flat with 18 in wheels. Terrible driving, every bump i am feeling it!.original tyre pressure 38psi. I don't mind the fuel consumption or the tyre wear 😏. I reduced the pressure to 28psi. Now I feel the difference in comfort and driving. On motorway it glued to the road!

    Such low tyre pressure with run flats is not a great idea. You’ll get excessive wear on the shoulders 😬

    As a Brit who's lived/driven in the US for a number of years, they rotate the wheels/tyres every time the car goes in for a service, which I prefer as the tyres wear evenly. Just wondering why rotating isn't common practice in the UK?

    I just changed to non-run flat Michelin Pilot sport 4’s on BMW 435d xdrive.... ride is now quieter, smoother and grippier than run flats. Have bought a space saver, which adds weight but main tyres are now 1.3kg or so lighter each. Very happy with result.

    Hi, i ve got one question, i have run flats on my bmw and i would like to switch to non run flats. Can i do it on the same bmw wheels ? I mean using the bmw wheels can we use RF and non RF ? By the way at my bmw i have 19 s and the pressure is 2,5 front and almost 3,2 rear (bmw settings) so 4 sounds huge to me...

    Can t wait to change (end of winter) pressure sensor stays the same ? Do i have to notify insurance since it is considered a "modification" ? I ve heard that these guys try to find excuse not to pay if something happens...

    Totally the opposite. The handling and ride comfort improved unbelievably. Through the corners the car is in another league with the Michelin’s 👍

    @@erkinkucukkaragoz2464 in fairness the PSS is an ultra high performance tyre designed for occasional track use. By non run flat standards they have very stiff sidewalls designed to keep a crisp turn in response. Suspect their design and outer treadblocks compensates for the lack of run flat solidity.

    So are still glad you removed the RubFlats? My 2017 Countryman S has Pirelli P7’s and need replacing at 11,000 miles. I just don’t want switching from RunFlats to have a negative affect on ride or handling.

    You soon know if you have too much pressure, the centre of the tyre wears more than the edges.
