Whilst the ride is Absolutely harsher than normal tyres I don't find the tyres are louder and they haven't worn any faster. That comes down to what RFT you get. I have the OEM Pirelli cinterato P7, very quiet and so far I have put almost 40,000 KM on them and they're only at about 50%. I have a pump like yours and a repair kit so I don't have to replace my RFTs if I get a flat. Here in Australia if you're get a flat with RFTs you supposed to replace the tyre, I don't intend on doing that if I can avoid it, especially as my tyres cost $330 each here!

Ken Lawton Definitely comes down to the specific RFT. On our 09 E92 335i, the stock Bridgestone potenza rtfs suck handling wise and make a lot of noise... So I’ll replace them with with Conti Extreme Contact Sports most likely. Our 14 S550 had Dunlop rfts which were smooth and quiet (it is an s class after all), but they wore down extremely fast

I work in a tire shop in Michigan and I can back everything you say about run flats. Something to consider, run flats don’t absorb impact the same. Seems like every bmw or Mercedes we perform a balance on, the wheels are out of round to some extent and no longer ride smoothly. Seems like the force of a pothole goes right to the wheels and suspension.

Hey Justin thanks for the video. Just looked at a used X3 that had replacement tires that were not run flat so was looking for alternatives. Just a word of caution to all, if you are not going with the run flat tires DO have a plan. Here is a weird but true story - I have a 40+ mile commute that is mostly on rural interstate in Wisconsin, one cold (-10 F) winter night I was headed home at about 7:00 PM when overtook a car that was billowing smoke, the driver was going 65 MPH on a flat tire and from the looks of it had been for awhile - apparently hell bent on getting someplace to get help. They showed no intention of stopping and I couldn't help them while they were going 65 down the interstate so I continued on my way thinking "damn I sure wouldn't want to deal with a flat tire on a night like this". Drove the final 30 miles home, pulled into my garage, got out and was walking around the back of my truck when I hear Ssssssssssssssssss coming from the the right rear, within a minute the tire was completely flat and I proceeded to change it in the comfort of my heated garage. Moral of the story: have a plan because you just never know. Oh, one more thing, you could have a long wait for roadside assistance in rural areas, especially when it is at night and -10, always keep that gas tank at least half full.

EXCELLENT tips, Bro! Wish I found your channel years ago. I literally just used your tip on the "service engine soon " light. all that was needed was to top off the coolant which had gotten low over the past year. The light went ouff shortly after driving a while. Can't imagine what the dealer would have "found" I needed and the high cost as opposed to a few ounces of coolant. Please keep 'em coming! As for run flats, I actually prefer them...just the confidence in not having to deal with a tire change in the middle of the road or something.

Justin I've changed from run flats to normal tyres about 12 months ago after owning my 3 series lci over 4 years.I can honestly say I 100% agree with you,The drive and feel of the car is much softer and in my opinion better grip in the corners because of the softer walls that allow a little flex.Anyway I've simply added a space saver (spare tyre)which is really thin and hardly takes up any room. This in my opinion was the best option as just like runflats once fitted you can only drive around 50mph yet continue your journey.

An easy solution to running non run flats is a product called RIDE-ON. It is a self sealing puncture additive that stays in liquid form under pressure and added benefit is no need to balance the tire. It self balances. Easy enough to go with a better more comfortable ride tire. AND if your tire is low, do too loss of a lil pressure, your TPMS will tell you and you can have the tire looked at easily enough.

I switched to standard tires on my X3 and wow, what a difference. I keep a bottle of green slime as it’s water soluble and is ok for tire pressure sensors and a mini battery powered compressor that plugs into any 12v lighter plug. Both fit right in the storage compartment in the back. I wish I did this 40k miles ago when I spent over a grand on new run flats not to mention on my previous 328xi...

I can attest to this. Recently needed to change my Pirelli P. Zero RFT's on the rear and the price of them was going to cost 470 EUR for two 255/40/R17's. The guys recommended I change all of the tires to standard tires which costed me the exact same as two RFT's which for me was a no brainer. The fronts were 225/45/R17's which I also changed to standard tires. The steering is lighter and more comfortable to turn and maneuver (you can still feel the road really well !) and the difference in ride quality is night and day ! I do town driving as I live on a small island and the roads are quite bad and this was a major upgrade for me !

Frankly speaking modern run-flat tires are very comfortable compared with those that produced 10 years ago. Also modern suspensions are better adopted to run-flat. I have plenty of comfort on 5 series g30 with 18” rft tires. But i’m sured that your experience is a quite valuable for 10+ years old bmw’s.

I thought I would be 'responsible' and keep runflats when I bought my e89 Z4, but decided to change and have never looked back, luckily haven't had an issue. On non runflats the car is better in every way - more compliant, better braking and super grippy (went with Pirelli in front so it might be that and not just the non run-flatness to be fair). In my country, you're either in a city where there's a tire shop every 5 blocks (in which case you can go there if you notice your puncture early) or you're doing stretches between city centers that are 100s of kilometers away so runflats would be no help anyway. They make sense in tightly developed first world countries, but I really wish we could just get a spare wheel well and a spare again - it does make me a little nervous to just hit the road in my Z4, vs my old e46 330i that had a full size spare. Now I do the thing we're all supposed to, I walk around my car before every trip and just check my tires quick. Few punctures are so bad that they completely deflate a tire instantly. But maybe I'm just getting old, I also wish good cars were still manuals and still had cigarette lighters - even if you don't smoke they're still more useful than a 12V socket - Am I going to plug a camping fridge into my Z4?

I've had run flats on s few BMWs. They have always been performance models so tires were wider and seemed to be a magnet for nails and screws. I hate how its a game that's hard to get out of.... typically you get a flat, don't want the sudden unplanned expense to replace all 4 so you buy that one new run flat, rinse and repeat. So normally I wait until my set of run flats need replacement and get conventional performance tires. When I do encounter a leak/flat, I use a small compressor and I also have road side assistance. I don't bother with the patch kit, because usually putting some air in gets me to where I need to go for a permanent solution.

In unsafe countries eg South Africa (especially if u a woman) makes sense that if tyre is flat (also towing a horse) that u can continue on your journey till u back at a garage or safe area... only downside of course is by that time ur tyre is buggered so u have to replace it (and tyres are not cheap)..Then again what value do u put on your life..

My new 2018 Mercedes-Benz C300 is already equipped with Run Flat Tires as standard equipment and has NO spare tire, nor does it have any space provision for a spare tire. My owner’s manual says that I should always replace them with the “MOE” tires (Mercedes-Benz Original Extended “Extended Mobility” tires that are contract made for MB by Continental) only for the special AMG 19” wheels. Although it has been known that the Run Flat Tires ride firm, the AMG sport suspension and the low profile tires ride firm anyway.

I don't know how KZread recommended this video for me to watch but damn I'm so glad I did. I have a BMW 330d e90 2007 model and so far I have been driving only on runflats 225/45/R17 (front) and 255/40/R17 (rear) ever since I bought the car in Mid-January 2016. What I can agree on is that the drive is much harder on runflats than on standard tires. So about 3 weeks ago, My left rear tire broke as I was on my way to work. I had to pull over and fortunately was close to my workplace when it happened. There's a BMW dealership literally down the road from my workplace and one of my buddies works there. I called him and he came through to assist my with a spare wheel. I was so grateful for that as changing a wheel is not possible for me as I have Cerebral Palsy. Having a spare tire in the trunk would not work for me as my wheelchair occupies about 90+ percent of the trunk space. I am definitely getting myself a Air Compressor and Tire repair kit. Can't believe I only see this video in Feb 2020. Thanks Justin

Just 2miles from the closest tire shop I decided to try my luck and pulled over immediately to notice that my tire was completely shot beyond repair.I pulled over to change into the sparetire which was in the trunk of my car. I am contemplating to go back and replace all tires for my good old Michelin Run Flats. BMW vehicles are heavy and my beautiful Rohana rims deserve better care in spite of any noice produced by tougher ROF tires. A fix with flat tire kits beats buying a tire and having to have them balance and mounted any time. I recommend OEM tires as suggested by the vehicle’s manufacturer.

We have a 2019 X3 with run flats and would never think of changing them as recommended by BMW engineering. I believe the pros far outweigh the cons and are a great safety feature, especially when driving in congested areas and freeways. Our X3 rides fantastic and is very quiet when the tires have the proper air pressure. The run flats have already paid dividends when we got a flat while driving on vacation through a horrible storm near the Smokey Mountains after a fallen branch poked a hole in a rear tire. We were able to drive a few miles to a small town and get the flat fixed which saved us from having to empty our luggage during that storm to replace the tire. I'm sold on run flats! In case of an emergency where I couldn't get to a repair shop within 50 miles (which is rare), I keep slime and an air compressor in the vehicle.

Runflat tires are safer if you get a puncure at high speed - you'll just see info on cluster what tire pressure is low and you'll have to reduce speed. If you're on autobahn, you feel much more confident - you can just drive to the next exit without having to pull over. With runflat tires you have also very low risk of damaging tire sidewall (it's much thicker), so tire blowout is almost impossible - it's very important when you're cruising at high speed - blowout at 200 km/h is the last thing you want :-)
