Why You SHOULDN'T Buy Run Flat Tires | Here's An Alternative! | DriveHub

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It's the age-old question in the tire world... Should I put run-flat tires on my car or go with regular tires? Run-flat tires allow a vehicle to still travel at limited speeds and distance after a tire has been punctured. This sounds like a great idea, why wouldn't you purchase run-flat tires then? Run flats aren't without fault and there are many cons to purchasing them.
Today I'm going to go over the pros and cons of both run-flat tires and standard regular tires, and also offer an alternative that has saved many non-run flat tire users in case of a tire emergency.

In my experience, regular tires provide much better performance than run flats. I like Michelin pilot super sports (or PS4’s now). Great tread wear vs the performance. I use a compressor & tire patch kit. Never had to use the patch kit. And only 1 flat tire in 15 yrs and two Corvettes. The one flat held air for several hours before having to be topped off. So, this has been a good option for me to date.

My run flats on my Q50 make me tram line like crazy on certain types of pavement and I’ve had so many opinions on the car from suspension adjustments, checking control arms, etc and chalked it up to Run Flat tires and crappy pavement. Replacing the current run flats is SO expensive, they're not in stock and need to be special ordered here in Canada. Frig it!! I respectfully disagree. We own a BMW X3 with run flats and love them. They are not noisy and the ride is excellent. BMW designs the vehicle for run flats and does not recommend changing to conventional tires. We got a flat during a terrible rain storm once on a mountain narrow winding road and the run flats allowed us to drive safely to a repair shop. They are well worth the extra price to me for safety and peace of mind especially when my wife drives alone. I currently use a compressor like the one in this video for an EV that I drive, but tire plugs don't always work and can invalidate the tire warranty. I'm planning to switch to run flats when I change the tires despite the few cons.

  • @TheFreshPeddler

You're talking about an x3, not a sportscar. Its an suv with a ton of insulation. Run flats are shit performers on your car and every car but again x3 so the issue is more cost vs convenience in incredibly rare situations being that you actually have a spare. Your car is not designed for them, you're just a sucker for believing that nonsense used to sell you more expensive tires. Unless you're running an armored x3 or dont know how to put on a spare id save the money and get more grip but like i said, it matters far less with an x3 as far as perf, noise and ride.

He left out so many things. I didn't want run flats but they came stock on my bmw x5. Noise, ride and life has been fine. If you catch a puncture quickly and don't drive on the it with low air you can plug them as a regular tire. Patch preferred also. Air compressor doesn't help if you have a big hole in your tire! And I'd hate to try to plug a hole on the side of the road. Runflats will take over. They are superior technology. Advantages are: Safer - never stranded. Never change a tire on side of road. Safer - tire is more controllable in sudden blowout. No spare needed to carry around in your car. Your wife and kids will like it.

So you are correct about the Runflat tires being noisy. However, when I had my Corvette with run flats and they needed replacing I did some research and my recollection is the OEM Goodyears are noisy and wear out quickly. The Michelin equivalent are supposedly noticeably quieter and also last longer. Not being stuck on the side of the road is worth the extra cash IMO.

Trust me, as a C5 owner for like 13 years, you should keep on those run flats. They've saved my ass so many times. When you use that flat kit on the C5 with the TPMS it'll plug it up/destroy it. That's why you use that with the z06 only. So now, if that fix-a-flat gum ruined your TPMS, you have to change that too and have it recalibrated. Just my thoughts.

My mom just had a flat tire in her Z4, which has (had) run flats and no spare. I guess she drove a bit too far on a flat and the tire was destroyed. We ended up taking the flat tire to Goodyear and got a new non run flat. The factors in deciding to go non run flat were that they were cheaper, in stock, and the car was stranded at a gas station sitting on a jack. Plus the car hardly ever leaves their town and my parents are in their 70’s and not interested in performance. Now I’m on the hunt for a spare to have on standby. Btw they insisted on it having a 6 speed manual. Save the manuals!!

The suspension of the Corvette is set up for run-flats. If your car sits in the winter, run-flats don't flat spot like a regular tire. Run-flats don't have as much body roll as regular tires. But with that being said, traction is better with a regular tire. Good report.

Thank you for your awesome info. My 2016 ATS has 34000 Km on it but Rear Left tire makes noise and it is Run-flat tire. I thought it was from the Rear Brakes or Parking brakes. so I replace them all and still, the exact same noise remains. So, it is absolutely tire noise. My question is as long as I keep the pressure, would it be safe to drive? I found a piece of rubber is hanging out on the tire sidewall close to the rim side. and it makes kind of grinding pulsation noise from it. Thank you for your help in advance.

It's funny how so many people are against runflat, claiming---well, all the points he made above. And he's right, if you're cheap, then by all means, don't get the tires. But, most of these points are not completely true. I moved to a smaller city from Houston, TX (pot hole paradise), where the roads are much better than Houston since they do not repair or update roads every day. Yet, TWICE (already), I experienced gouges in my tires, in different vehicles. One was a Mercedes SUV, the other was my BMW Gran Coupe. In both cases, I was able to get off the freeway, inspected my tires, and drove home. Of course, if I didn't have runflats in these vehicles, I would have had to carry a spare or call AAA, wait 3 hours, and find a ride home. One of those times was in a shady part of town in the early evening. Try waiting there. Now, most of his points regarding runflats are TRUE, but he failed to specify why. He made it seem like runflats are completely bad. Here is the thing folks, and judge it for yourself: The most luxurious vehicles in the world, known for comfort and quietness, come with run-flat tires (RFTs). Yes, Mercedes, BMW, Rolls Royce....all come RFTs. I don't hear any owner complain that these vehicles are NOT comfortable, or not quiet. The truth is: all of these manufacturers have DESIGNED their vehicles around runflats. These vehicles were designed to "absorb" all the negativities of RFT. A true customers of these brands should be able to replace a set of tires, and not bicker about an extra $200 for the safety and well being of them when in or driving their vehicles. I am not completely disagreeing with what he said above. But I wish he would either say this is only in regards to his Corvette, or elaborate more, instead of being bias to scare everyone on a product. It is true that RFTs are loud and rough, heavy and cost more (I wouldn't completely say "expensive", as anyone who lives within their mean should be able to afford for their rainy days). They do...IF you put RFTs on a vehicle that was not meant to use RFTs. Put that on a Toyota Camry, and you will experience all of his factors. And I don't know much about Corvettes, but it seems Corvettes slapped on RFTs on their certain newer generations. And please correct me if I'm wrong on this, when they released the Z06, they used nonRFTs with the same suspension of the C cars they originally changed to OEM RFTs (not sure which gen), but changing from RFTs to nonRFTs make the ride and handling of the Z06 much better. In MY opinion, when I found out about the Z06, it made me question whether their Corvettes should even have RFTs at all. As with the brands I have owned, they do not put RFTs on their high performance vehicles. The BMW M cars do not have RFTs, the 911s do not have RFTs. Why? As he pointed out, they're stiff, loud, and heavy. On these more ultra high performance cars (Corvette included), the idea is to maximize performance. And to do that, you do not want heavy or stiff tires. These vehicles aren't meant or designed to drive with RFTs, so his points are valid, if he just added "my Corvette". I have never owned a GM, so I can't speak for their designs. But I can confirm that on my non-ultra high performance vehicles that came with RFTs, the tires are great, and on my non-ultra high performance vehicles, I do not use RFTs, and will never replace them with such tires. Thing it, he did state his disclaimer saying this is just HIS review, and he's not any specialist. But---this is somewhat of a known source to almost 56k subscribers. If you have that many followers who trust in you (based on some of the comments I've read), you should do your part and research a bit further instead of following the "I hate RFT" believers. There are so many haters of RFTs out there, and unfortunately there are way too many bias reviews out there because someone can't afford an extra $100-200 for peace of mind, or just would like to believe thus so without knowing the facts. My vehicles with factory RFTs are extremely comfortable and handle extremely well. I bought them for that reason, and that reason also came with RFTs. I'm sure, maybe, I could, improve the comfort level a bit more, due to the softness of NonRFT. But then again, I'm thinking, if my vehicle was designed to react to stiffer sidewalls, heavier tires, and stiffer materials, then replacing with something opposite will actually, MAY, make my vehicle not handle to it's fullest capability, which in turn may make my vehicle less safe. hmmm...something to think about right? (I'm sorry, I wrote this over a 4 hour span while at my office with people walking in and out, so I hope it makes sense)

Thanks Craig! There wasn’t much statistical data about skid pad performance particularly, but what I researched and found out via lots of forum input was that the softer sidewall found on regular tires as opposed to run-flats equates to better grip in corners and on wet surfaces. People did say the run-flats all had a great turn in feel, which I noticed myself, and that’s due to the stiffer sidewall. That’s where you’re going to notice a difference mainly. The run-flats tend to break traction easier because the reinforced sidewall doesn’t flex like a regular tire does. Again, this is stuff only true enthusiasts, like yourself, who really push their vehicles to their limits will notice, and that was the aim of the video!

I use run-flat tires on all three of my cars....2017 Corvette Z06, 2015 Mercedes CLS400, and a 2009 BMW 535i. I've never had a problem with noise or ride quality, but they provide much better handling! I'll never return to using "standard" tires ever again!

When tracking your corvette run flats are way better than standard. They give you better traction, performance, and cornering at high speeds and high G's. Standard tires don't. There is to much flex in the tire sidewalls.

A lot of myths about run flats mentioned in this video. New design run flat tires do not sacrifice performance. The Michelin run flats in particular only have one sidewall stiffener which is on the inboard side of the tire. The outside sidewall is just like the one in a NON run flat tire. What you get is a tire that performs as well or better than the same version of the NON run flat tire. As for noise tread design and road surface are what make the noise different and usually just changes the location where noise occurs. One tire is not noisy on one road surface and another is. Drive 15 miles and suddenly the roles are reversed with the noisy one now being quiet and the quiet one now being noisy. Even slicks with absolutely no tread can make a lot of noise. The other advantage of run flats is with being able to drive the car after it goes flat. First, there are no blow outs where the tire suddenly deflates and puts a huge drag on one wheel potentially causing a loss of control. Second, they can be driven far further than the 50 miles that most people mention. Sure if you want the tire to be repairable you need to drive at no greater than 50 mph for no more than 50 miles. However, if you have a slow leak you can stop and add air every so often, if you have a huge hole in the tire then it isn't repairable anyways so it doesn't matter how far you drive it. You could easily put 1000 miles on the tire as long as you kept speed in the 50 mph and slower range so the tire didn't get too hot. If it does get too hot all you have to do is stop and let it cool down. So they are quite liberating. As for the presenter. One thing I noticed when his video showed the interior of the car was his poor grip on the shift lever. He had his hand wrapped around the shifter Vs putting the palm of his hand on top of the shifter and using the heel of the hand and finger tips to move the shifter. Even with the stock GM shifter it is easy to flick the shifter from one gear to another with small movements of the hand and some movement of the arm. This gets you accurate shifts without missing gears thus eliminates the myth that an after market shifter is required.

New to your channel and so far i like your style (editing, camerawork, etc) and sense of humor. Nice to see a layman's take instead of a know-it-all or idiot that is "rebuilding" another Copart mess. I predict much growth for you going forward. Some thoughts: Tires? The time of run flats has come and gone. Even after plugging a tire in an emergency, get to a shop to have it patched from the inside - postehaste. *Never* put those cans of goopy snot in a car tire! Finally, research nitrogen in tires and report back on your opinions, please. Your channel? You and your fans were making fun of jorts recently. There is nothing wrong with jorts! Or cargo shorts for that matter. Or cargo jorts even. If you want to laugh, look down at your goofy shoes. And if you want your channel to blow up, try more cleavage shots like most of the chick yubetooers - works for them!

Plugs are fine, so long as you’re not too close to the sidewall, but the same goes for an internal patch. I’d only be worried about a plug if I were in the practice of running my car REALLY hard on a regular basis. Even then, you’re only risking getting another flat. Nitrogen: it’s for suckers. It will eventually lose pressure, just like normal air, and then you’ll have to pay again to have them filled up, for no gain. Just use compressed air.
