Viewer Question: Sylvester Harris - Hey John. I wanted to bring a really disturbing article to your attention from Variety about Disney’s new leadership and direction. The article basically lays out a company in massive confusion, the additional of unnecessary new layers of management, the taking away of power from the actual creators and giving it to the business suits and tension between Bob Iger and the new CEO Bob Chapek. If you’ve read the article what are your thoughts and could this all be a problem for Disney?

I have to wonder, theoretically of course- what happens if Kevin Feige goes to the board of Disney and asks them to choose- him or Bob Chapek. Unless Star Wars or Avatar become as big as Marvel, Feige is Disney's biggest money-maker. I think in that case they would only choose to keep Chapek so the division heads don't feel like they run the company. But if Feige is almost on the level of Chapek, he's surely not going to take stupid notes from a manager that never had any experience in making content.

I work in finance in a totally different industry. What I learned early on is that the ONLY way to have true accountability for results (good and bad) is to have the producers/generators of the actual service/product accountable for their own P&L. When they are not responsible for their own successes and failures, the organizations suffers because you lose the incentives that drive people to excel.

Yesterday, John did a video about Jungle Cruise getting a day and date release on Disney+. In the CNBC article he cited, I went and read it, and apparently, according to insiders in Disney with knowledge of the situation, Disney's investors are frustrated too. Apparently, it goes back to the Mulan Disney+ Premiere Access decision late last year, when they were "promised" to know the numbers of how well it did on Disney+ (the actual numbers not made available to the public) at the Investors Call last November, and then they got nothing. Something similar also allegedly happened recently with Raya and the Last Dragon. (I'm actually surprised that John didn't cover that in the segment about Jungle Cruise yesterday or this topic today.) If Chapek is actually LYING to investors, I'm sure the investors could give Disney's Board an ultimatum: oust Chapek and his allies, or lose them as investors and have their reputation permanently tarnished for potential future investors.

Some of this is open to interpretation. For example, when I read up on Disney’s restructuring, I didn’t get the impression that the distribution arm would be meddling in the creative process. Rather they would just decide on whether content is released theatrically, on Disney+, Hulu, or a hybrid. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Let the creators create and let the business folks determine the best way to get it in front of audiences.

If Chapek adds a layer of management in Disney strictly for financial reasons then the company will start to die. It wouldn't surprise me if many production people start leaving in mass in 2 or 3 years which is when the next phase of the Marvel MCU starts over. Who do I think is a threat to Chapek? Kevin Fiege, because many may consider him for the top job at Disney if Bob Chapek stumbles. Expect a much higher demand for Disney to kick into renovating the Disney parks because Chapek reduced the overhead maintenance expenditures for that division. That area of Disney can't run on skin and bones forever, because the attendance by the general public will notice the rundown sections of the park over time.

The Idea being that you first grow your revenue and then once you've reached your revenue target you switch gear and maximize profit by focusing on cost. And each phase demands different leadership. In such a situation it would make sense to let distribution take over during the second phase. But in Disney's case they had massive profit while also increasing revenue at the same time. Like, there's no wrong in shifting focus at Disney+ because no matter how cliche it may sound, that's the future. But in the end, it ends up leaving the other companies and divisions at a marginal state that they could end up dying. Its all becoming a matter of quantity over quality at worse, really worse. Disney is trying to operate more like Netflix. Netflix doesn't have to worry about cable channels and broadcast networks and cinemas and physical media and PVoD and on and on. Separating distribution from content-creation is supposed to allow for Disney to compete better in the streaming wars.

The way this has been described and conveyed, I'm reminded of the changes from 44 to 45. I'm in the camp that would charitably describe those changes from 44 to 45 as "not good".

I personally think it’s WAY, WAY too early to make bold predictions about the future of the Walt Disney Company under Chapek. So FOR NOW, i’m gonna keep enjoying this company that I’ve enjoyed since I was born. However, I can understand why you might be concerned about this article. I’m just not gonna worry too much FOR NOW.

I'm glad you're optimistic, but unfortunately its not just this article or his last year as CEO; Chapek has spent years as the head of Parks and Resorts at Disney where he has been cutting staff and entertainment while increasing prices. Disneyland fans have predicted trouble ever since he was announced CEO last year, and now it looks like other news outlets are picking up on it.

Why the lionising of Iger? All of Disney’s innovation and creativity which the company was built on died under his watch with a focus of subpar animation and over exploiting existing IPs (eg live action remakes), devaluing them in the process. Not to mention the complete mismanagement of Star Wars after its purchase (has Disney actually made a profit from the brand once all the costs such as Galaxy’s Edge are taken into account?) and overspending on the acquisition of FOX. Iger saw that the spending over exploitation policy’s he implemented were coming home to roost so he cowardly jumped shipped to protect his own reputation and let someone else take the flak rather then demonstrate true leadership and steer the company through rocky seas!

These are my views: Disney has been going downhill for a while, since the 1990s. Beginning with the disposing of Horizons, World of Motion dark rides and going towards motion simulators and a race car ride. Also the Winnie the Pooh ride which is like taking a ride through cardboard cutouts. Screens can make a nice background for rides but I think you need an animatronic foreground. I think it is true people appreciate real elements in rides. You cant watch TV at home. Also you have junk Hotels, the one which is allegedly modelled after the French Riveria but looks like some boxy apartment complex. The quality theming like Grand Floridian is just not there. A motion simulator and coaster here and there is fine, but they knocked out good dark rides and replaced them with those so the parks are becoming more heavy on those. You cant these dominate. People can go to Six Flags for coasters.

If Pixar or other execs start stepping down in a few years, that’ll showcase it was a bad idea... I mention Pixar in particular, cause under Jobs they didn’t take shit, and they may be the first one to decide they out imho.

I started going to Disneyworld resorts and parks in 1996. I went at least twice a year from NY. But because of the way Chapek is ruining not running Disney i no longer go. It's a shame that he is destroying Walt's dream of having a place for families to go. People from states outside of Florida can no longer afford to go. Chapek needs to be let go and bring someone in that really cares about carrying on Walt's dream and the average people. Prices have gone through the roof for everything. Just outrageous.

i think the effects of this are being felt now. As you say, the decision to put Pixar movies onto Disney+ directly taken out of the hands of the creators is a bad move. Pixar movies are a big deal. They revolutionised animation and made people take the medium seriously. Pixar has put out four $1billion movies. Then, there's the issue with WandaVision and Falcon and The Winter Soldier clearly being rushed in production to get them onto Disney+. This is clearly not a decision taken by creatives. And as a result, subscriber numbers to Disney+ have begun to plateau. What I fear is that decisions like this will lead to diminishing returns from Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars movies and the studio executives will blame creatives for it and either fire the great visionary creators, interfere more heavily with the work, or shut promising and would-be groundbreaking projects down entirely.

Of course creators are no longer being given creative control. Everything has to be created by committee now for fear of being cancelled. And that’s why everything is already starting to suck. Risks are no longer being taken because corporations are playing it safe, not realizing they’re only going to ruin their IP’s.
