Lyrics:
You get a shiver in the dark
It’s raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel all right when you hear that music ring
You step inside but you don’t see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth London town
You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he’s strictly rhythm he doesn’t want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make the scene
He’s got a daytime job he’s doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for Friday night
With the Sultans with the Sultans of Swing
And a crowd of young boys they’re fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don’t give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain’t what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans played Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
‘Thank you goodnight now it’s time to go home’
and he makes it fast with one more thing
‘We are the Sultans of Swing'

That is my defence, apart from an army band lyre, against an Amish condemnation of music as ‘Dionisiac’: Nietzsche uses the term to mean “ecstatic nutter”. What you are describing is why we can be proud of our commitment to it - ‘Apollonian’: the rational considered *mind*

My parents were in their teens when they had me, so I was raised on 70s Classic Rock vinyl. My dad cherished his collection, pampered it, lol. I remember laying on the living room floor feeling the vibrations from the speakers. It never ceases to amaze me the emotions that can be triggered by a song. Dad passed 3 months ago at only 67. This song will forever elicit waves of precious memories for this girl.

Their collaborative "Neck & Neck" was definitively bona fide. Why Chet Atkins didn't bestow C.G.P.-status upon Mark Knopfler (& certain other notables)...we'll just never know...

In 2024 with all the shit and coldness and lies and uncertainty you listen to this and you feel good again. MOST of the music they make today cant do this!
Simply one of the best songs I've ever heard.

One of my all time favorite songs.
Song came out when I was 18, today I heard it coming out of a passing car driving by my home in San Francisco. What a joyful inspiration that we're still loving the real music that came before all the current nonsense. Took my son to see Mark Knopfler at the Greek Theater was a blast. Thank you for all the wonderful years of Alchemy music.
I love how they're so relaxed, really enjoying what they are doing.. I will never tire of this song.

I'd be honored if some Dire Straits fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performance of ON EVERY STREET in tribute to the genius songwriting of Mark Knopfler. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.

search up john butler funky tonight... he's got bloody talent no offence to mark he's a great guitarist but he is only playing chords when he is singing
@alanhuffbass

The problem with singing and playing is not about the chords, it's all abouth RYTHM. The right hand is what matters. If you pay attention, John Butler is always fingering a fast and repeated pattern when he's singing, except for a slower riff at some point. Nothing different than what Mark Knopfler is doing. They're both great musicians. Talent? I'd say it's more about practice till perfection. Also, Mark is left-handed but his right hand is incredible. Peace.

This is an example of song and music complimenting each other perfectly. The man tells the story, but then the guitar paints the PICTURE of that story, like a play by play. 👌 So good

One of the best songs ever written. Much more Knopfler is self taught and with no training. Incredible.

I'm 50 now. I've been hearing this song since I was a little kid. I didn't realize for so many years that this song is a masterpiece. The guitar work is amazing and flawless. The vocal sound from Mark fits perfectly with the mood the instruments create. Having a band that tight behind the lead guitar work of Mark, makes it perfection. There's no repetitions in the song. It's a complete story from the start to the end.

What about the sound guys the roadies the people who built the amps the engineers the luthiers the miners who got the metal the lumberjacks, Pythagoreas, and what about the cavemen who first played their bow as a harp why don't those people ever get credit either. That's what I'm wondering.
