I still remember celebrating my 18th birthday (self treated) at their concert in Melbourne in 1983. Skipped last class in Year 12 just for their concert. They played this song of course, about almost as good as this version. I still remember that like it was yesterday.

John's bass is soooo vital in this song. Nobody is saying that. It gives a lot of groove to this masterpiece in the record (like in six blade knife and in the gallery). John simply deserves more credit.

Dire Straits were probably one of the best bands at changing volume and tempo repeatedly throughout a song and bringing out every subtle nuance in their performance. This is what live performances should be like. Even if you're not a musician, there's something that everyone can take out of seeing and hearing something unique. It also allows the players to avoid being overcome with boredom -- playing the song the same every night. It does, however, require that the band have that deep connection and know how to play together, and play off of each other. This is a clinic in how to do that. Utter brilliance!

This is one of the finest live recordings there is. Knopfler is obviously something else on this, but it's the rhythm section of Hal Lindes, Terry Williams and John Illsley that create the foundation for this version to be as good as it is.

Early Dire even just on CD is awesome. Drummer I took for granted all these years. First album was the best for me, Brothers In Arms later classic. I dont know all those music type terms I just know its special. What I grew up listening too, I will leave listening too, kids today don't know Jack!!!

@@hsvgts4349 Never been one to really give the drummers a lot of credit other than in solos, but this dude totally drove that song from front to back, kudos for the rest of the band for keeping up with him, you could even see Knopfler looking back and smiling several times!

Loved Dire Straits but just in the last few months I have realised how insanely good this Alchemy version of Sultains of Swing is. The best live version of a tune ever with all band members giving their all except the drummer who was nuts!!

2:30 holy shi*t. That drumming is unreal!

The drummer, Terry Williams, is the best drummer I have ever heard. He literally sets the tempo for this cut and without him Dire Straits would only be half of what they are here. The people filming this agree due to the amount of time they spend cutting to him, something rarely done in videos. I love listening to perfection.

Timeless one of the few records that the live version is miles better than the studio one and to see every one thrashing their instrument to an inch of its life awesome

I'll forever consider Pink Floyd as my favourite bande to play live but I have to admit this is the best live performance I've ever seen

I've been a huge fan of Dire Straits for years and what I think makes them a fantastic band is they are all individually great musicians in their own right. Of course Mark continues to have great solo career

Well put..I think a Rock Symphony like this classic if we can call it that is much harder to pull off given the blistering pace and the all too high probability of messing it up so easily and just once..may be a better trained ear can spot some minor inaccuracies in the workmanship here but to the average fan, this is just flawless. And doing it live on stage with no chance for a do over or re recording is just icing on the cake...how supremely talented they are individually and collectively !!

I have watched and listened to this piece hundreds of times (maybe a thousand) and still get goosebumps. To me it’s simply the best live performance from all involved I have ever witnessed. Everything in complete sync, and Williams on drums the icing on the cake! You knew you were going to get a great mark knopfler but it’s everybody. To this day I’m so blown away by this production, and I’m 69 years old. Absolute PERFECTION.

I was there,best concert I have ever been to,also saw mark in front of only a a few hundred fans in shepherds bush arena,years later the best.

There should be another button other than just like to show appreciation for this video! What a performance!

That drummer is on fire! Amazing. I wish I could single out the drums and hear just him. The man is totally in control.

Hes actually not. His time changes when he pays fills. He speeds up slightly. Its a no no in the drumming world.

The thing with Sultans Of Swing is, most of the time this song is performed live it seems to be way better than the studio version, live version have something that makes this song extremely special.
