Lyrics:
getting crazy on the waltzers but it’s the life that i choose
sing about the sixblade sing about the switchback and a torture tattoo
and i been riding on a ghost train where the cars they scream and slam
and i don’t know where i’ll be tonight but i’d always tell you where i am
in a screaming ring of faces i seen her standing in the light
she had a ticket for the races just like me she was a victim of the night
i put a hand upon the lever said let it rock and let it roll
i had the one arm bandit fever there was an arrow through my heart and my soul
and the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above
and i’m just high on the world
come on and take a low ride with me girl
on the tunnel of love
it’s just the danger when you’re riding at your own risk
she said you are the perfect stranger she said baby let’s keep it like this
it’s just a cakewalk twisting baby step right up and say
hey mister give me two give me two cos any two can play
and the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above
and i’m just high on the world
come on and take a low ride with me girl
on the tunnel of love
well it’s been money for muscle another whirligig
money for muscle and another girl i dig
another hustle just to make it big
and rockaway rockaway
and girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids
oh girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids
she took off a silver locket she said remember me by this
she put her hand in my pocket i got a keepsake and a kiss
and in the roar of dust and diesel i stood and watched her walk away
i could have caught up with her easy enough but something must have made me stay
and the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above
and i’m just high on the world
come on and take a low ride with me girl
on the tunnel of love
and now i’m searching through these carousels and the carnival arcades
searching everywhere from steeplechase to palisades
in any shooting gallery where promises are made
to rockaway rockaway from cullercoats and whitley bay out to rockaway
and girl it looks so pretty to me like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids
girl it looks so pretty to me like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids

Leslie Ash! Men Behaving Badly, anyone remember that? Always get goosebumps listening to the gorgeous outro. I used to relate to this as a youngster thinking about lost love and bad decisions (or maybe not!) either way, that’s what songs should invoke, not pointless diatribe and feeding corporations! Made in 1980. This year no artist or band will beat this tune, god damn beautiful!
Mark Knopfler is a genius with an accurate, quirky, blues voice.
When I was 22 I was working with street children in Ethiopia. One day a social worker and I were driving down south near the Kenyan border to visit another project there. In the car was just this one tape from Dire Straits with this song on it. The bumpy ride would take us 12 hours and we listened to this song probably a hundred times, watching the most gorgeous landscapes and sunsets I’ve ever seen. Most beautiful time of my life in the most beautiful country with the most beautiful music. I miss Africa so much...

That last guitar solo is gotta be the most beautiful thing I've ever heard in my whole godamn life, it's so so incredible I can't find the perfect word to describe it, it's happiness inducing really, mark was a true master, period.

I love the way Mark Knopfler, although only in his early 30s at the time he sang this, sounded as if he was recalling a very deep and distant past.

Music in that age took time to unfold. Something so much important these times..
I think I was 15 when I bought the album Alchemy, Now it's 2024 and I'm 55 and still love listening. Good music never ages, Love Dire Straits ♥️.
The outro is the most beautiful, deeply emotional guitar work Mark has done in his celebrated career. Yes, it surpasses Sultans of Swing. It deserves to go down in history as one of the great, all-time guitar solos. I’m guessing Tunnel of Love just didn’t get the radio play of Stairway and some of the other iconic songs. Mark channels feeling through his instrument; the outro is even more powerful and heart rending than his very powerful lyrics.

This song reminds me of someone I met a few years ago. I met her at a nightclub where a live band was playing. We had a blast, dancing to almost every song. At the end, we hugged and parted ways, because we lived in very different worlds that we had to go back to. I found myself wishing I could recapture that moment in time, just like the guy in the song. It makes me think of her and brings back bittersweet memories.

There is also an element you will never understand - the pure magic of the Spanish City in Whitley Bay in the late 60s/early 70s. Like a Haiku this song captures a moment.

Pick Withers - the perfect drummer for Dire Straits. He had such a fantastic ability to match every song with perfectly placed subtle fills and a driving force. Outstanding musician.

Mark Knopfler is a genius but he can't fulfill his vision without an elite rhythm section. He had one.

I definitely agree, but does anyone happen to know why he left Dire Straits in the early 80s? I would argue some of their best work (So Far Away, Money For Nothing, Walk Of Life, etc) was still ahead of them.

@@AchtungBaby77 It's all a bit murky. There are interviews with Pick on KZread where he skates around the issue, (maybe for legal reasons?) as does J Illsley in his book on life in the band. He and M Knopfler met up with him. He anounced he was leaving, and that was that. Illsley doesn't really expand much further. Perhaps it was a combination of much touring, personality clashes and musical direction that made Pick leave? There's a rather vague but well documented "alleged" quote from Pick saying he left because he was "in danger of becoming a rock drummer". Just my opinion here, but I can't imagine Pick on the Brothers In Arms album. A different animal to what went before it. But I can imagine him on the last album. Whatever....a truly great drummer.

@@AchtungBaby77 From what I understand is Pick viewed himself as a jazz guy and thought the band's poppish direction wasn't for him. It was a creative fulfillment thing. Probably it was a lot more complicated than that but that's just the gist as I've heard it.
the outro is really brilliant, like watching sunset
