The DPP4 I use it a lot. The best Raw editing program for Canon cameras. The color that is achieved with this software is very good. Also the PictureStyleEditor is fantastic!

It would be useful when referring to DPP (but it may exist somewhere already) to have the logical progression within DPP to produce the best result when post-processing. As an example if you sharpen before you remove noise you enhance the noise and make it more difficult to remove. If you remove noise too much in certain windows you degrade the picture sharpness and cannot recover the sharpens of the image. The same goes for contrast shadows highlights color correction cropping etc. It would help the beginners to provide some logical workflow steps with guidelines of what to do first and which tabs in DPP to start with and end with. This would also apply to output sharpening re what you will use the image for as a final product and how to not over/under-process or do something in the wrong order and get sub-optimal final products. Just my humble opinion

I believe the masking/set adjustment area feature can be improved by adding a brush to remove the mask from places we don't want in order to refine our selection. Adding more adjustment sliders within our custom adjustment area would save me from needing to use third-party applications for fine tuning.

I think Photoshop is a tool that should be held in reserve for what it does in all of the detail areas of photo work that are outside of what a program like DPP4 does best, and that is to make the image that comes out of your camera the best that it possibly can be. After you get to that stage, then you can customize you image in so many different ways, and Photoshop has an arsenal of choices on its own. To further complicate DPP4 is not a good thing to do... I like it being held to simply making adjustments to bring the image to it's highest level.

I have recently downloaded DPP 4.8.30. My major difficulty is that, although I have a reasonably fast PC with adequate RAM for most applications, I find this software extremely slow. The worst possible function is in the "partial image adjustment" department. I have not managed yet to "paint" a partial image area correctly. The cursor moves freely, but the brush does not follow but with several seconds' delay. In this does not allow you to see immediately the effects you are creating but when it is too late to make any corrective moves. Is there a later version released yet? I read about DPP 4.9.20; logically this should be a more recent version, but I am not sure how Canon assigns software numbers.

Thanks John Already watched the video. The explanation is very limited though. Was comparing DPP with ACR and DXO last night and noticed the OOTB colour rendering is very good in DPP however the limiting factor for me is the availability of good tutorials for DPP. For example; the DR adjustment tool itself is proving hard. We can slide all 4 sides but I need to know the basics behind that. Downloaded the manual but it's more like a technical guide and explains what is what instead of guiding when and why. I am not very experienced in photography and some basic understanding of a tool makes my work bit easier. Regards

At 6:08 your cursor turns into an arrow and you can click and drag to crop. No such thing happens in my DPP 4. The cursor stays in the shape of 4 arrows. Like a + sign with pointers at the end. And no clicking and dragging is possible, which makes the cropping virtually impossible.

+CanonUSA Sorry to butt in on Barbara, but I have a Canon 70D now after progressing through the ranks. What can I do as I have DPP version 3.13.0.1? I have hardly used it for years. Also, it appears that DPP was for RAW images but I just noticed that it can also be used with JPEG images too. I can trim and alter all the main characteristics of the photo but not resize. I came across this while researching Picture Style. DPP is the only place I could find the complete Picture Style that had been used on my JPEG images AND my video clips. I thought it was important to know what Picture Style the pics and videos had originally been taken in. For picture editing I have been using Corel PaintShop Pro X6 (on Vista) and previous versions mainly for trimming and batch resizing for uploading to websites or emailing.

Wow! I stumbled on 4 of these videos for version 4 of DPP. Why are these so hard to find? Are there more than the first four that I found or are the other videos not out yet? How can I make sure I will be able to see them? Can I subscribe or something? A comment on the software - I am a very serious semi-pro photographer and I had been using Aperture since its inception. I found the earlier versions of DPP very unappealing, although DPP has always had certain advantages. Now that Apple has seen fit to abandon Aperture and the serious photographers, I have been in search of an alternative. I found the new version of DPP and I am very impressed with the improvements Canon has made. It certainly does not accomplish all that I was able to do in Aperture, but I will be using another editor (Acorn) to make those kinds of edits now. Speaking of which, I wish DPP4 would allow me to export to an editor besides Photoshop. Perhaps something in settings to designate the external editor? Obviously I can simply leave DPP and manually open the file in my editor, but being able to ship it right from DPP would be nice.

Hi Samuel! If the images you are trying to make adjustments to were shot as JPEGs, you won't be able to change the White Balance because the camera has already processed the White Balance you set for the shot into the JPEG image. Try making the adjustment to a RAW file instead. Also, once an image is a JPEG, much of the data that was there when the image was in its RAW form is gone, so it cannot be converted back to a RAW. We hope this answers your questions!

Hi Georgiana! You will want to verify that you are working with RAW files when using the Basic Adjustment Tool Palette to adjust images. The tools in this tab only work on RAW files. The only adjustments you can make on JPEG/TIFF images are applying Auto Lighting Optimizer and adjusting image sharpness. See page 48 of your DPP4 manual for details. The lens aberration correction functions and Digital Lens Optimizer can only be used with RAW images. It will not work on JPEG files. @@CanonUSA Thanks for your assistance. I downloaded the software. But it appears there is no way to save all your hard effort, to organize your photos with collections & keywords or data. The manual does not give more info. There is no export or backup of collections. That automatically means I cannot use the software, except only to convert raw files. If you have such great, top notch equipment, why not a great program at least with the basics, with DPP 4. It is lacking in just some basics, to the point I find it a serious lack & so cannot use it for such purposes. No one expects that canon Dpp must have adobe level of features, but DPP is a far cry from even just giving a great, basic, yet very solid, full functioning software with such INITIAL photo processing needs, to go along with your great equipment. I need to be able to sort/ create collections / add keywords or metadata/ tags, etc, at the same time as initial processing from raw, & not need to use some separate program that adds a second step, with need to go through all photos again, a 2nd time, to take such a step. That is a BASIC need that DPP should be notch with & excel at. Thanks for listening Blessings. Peace.

Two things: why does the DPP 4 descriptions and advertising not mention this prominently, or at least when one tries to use that function with a JPEG why does the program not give a message that the function is not possible with a JPEG (instead of the user wasting time trying to find a solution)? Secondly, I find this a REAL drawback to DPP 4 and will switch to another editing program.

Most people use 3rd party programs to manipulate jpeg programs, they will not be offended. DPP is best for converting Canon RAW files.

After having adjusted a couple of pictures I want to crop them all with the same ratio but it always returns to "free", can I find a way to keep the settings?

  • @CanonUSA

Hi there! When you set the ratio for one image, then move to edit another, it will default to "Free" and cannot be set to default to another setting. We hope this answers your question!

Thank you, yes it does. Usually after a session I end up with around 20 pictures I want to crop to 9,5x11,5 cm and send to a lab to develop and this really slows down the process. I used to use DPP 1 or 2 until now where there was a separate trimming tool and the possibility to stay with the same setting.

I have a real newbie question. I have DPP open and selected an image. I clicked on Quick Check, backed out of this and went to Edit Image. I can't change even one of the options; brightness, white balance, nothing. They are all greyed out. What did I do wrong? Augh.

Hi Erica! The specific adjustments you mentioned are only available when editing a RAW image. Images shot as JPEGs can be adjusted, but the available settings are more limited. We hope this information helps!

After editing, do we save as a JPEG file and if so what is the point to RAW files. I hope someone can give me some advice on this one.

  • @CanonUSA

Hi Clive! The advantage of RAW is that all of the original data is there with the image so you can make more detailed changes or edits before you process it into a usable format, such as JPEG or TIFF. Another benefit to this is you still have the original RAW if you want to come back to it later and do something differently with it, whereas a JPEG or TIFF with those previous edits is final. We hope this helps!

I don't have much experience with the program yet, but I wanted to ask... when I save edits to the original CR2 file, it's really only saving the recipe? I will always have the option to delete the recipe and revert back to the original RAW file? Including cropping? That can be undone if I choose?
