Excellent Tutorial. I downloaded DPP4 some time ago and trying to work with the software without the benefit of training such as yours resulted in a very frustrating experience. Your video answered so many questions I had and am now eager to start working with the software with a much clearer understanding of how to perform basic photo organizing and editing. A really well done and easy to follow tutorial. I did find DPP4 very slow though, especially doing the convert and save to JPEG from RAW files. Several minutes for each file.

This is the BEST raw convertor for canon files thx for the tutorial

Thanks for this. I've been trying to work this out for myself, so some useful info here I didn't know. Everyone seems to use Lightroom but I don't want to pay a monthly sub if DPP4 can't do the job for free.

Thank you for the comment, it's definitely a useful piece of software. It does lack some of the light room features but it still lets you do some great edits.

This video is just great, thank you. I like to speed and explanations, good demonstrations too, the best I've seen. I'm off to watch a few of your other videos now.. :-)

You explain so well. Help me please...I have downloaded DPP in the past...one yr ago...and was so frustrated I un installed it. BUT...I have a nice new R6 mark II and no other application will open the CR3 RAW files. I am working on a six moths old macbook and I am still frustrated. I downloaded DPP again and it opens fine and all I want to do is find some photos which need processing and I can't do it. The computer tree on the left is similar to what you show on your PC but all I want to do is navigate to the desktop where these photos are stored in folders. Normally when I would choose Desktop with any other program it would navigate to the desktop window where I could find the images and open them. I finally made it to the "Desktop" in the tree but nothing happens when I click on it. So I know the I am doing something wrong...please help...much appreciate any new direction you can give me.

You chose the sharpness slider, but didn't tell us what the Unsharp mask setting do? I noticed I can switch and change them, and they both stay to what I set.

thank you … it really helps … I’m casual user and I just needed free version of editing tool for my Canon 77D. I dont want to use Lightroom coz its expensive and no need for me. 👌😊

Thank you very much for taking the time to make this DPP starter video Dom - it helped a lot. I am p*ssd at Adobe for bundling LR "classic" with PS @ $20 per month. I don't need PS and would rather not move to cloud based LR so, looking for a way around that for editing my brand new Canon R6 photos. Seems the DPP is pretty good but I am used to LR-5. I'll keep playing with DPP and see if I will make the switch.

I had used an older EOS Utility program on my old laptop for several years with no problem. However, I can't find my photos after downloading and installing the program and trying to import photos to my new PC from my Rebel. Can someone please advise?

My "Basic" panel is greyed out. Any help? Within the "BASICS" panel: Underneath brightness adjustment, then under white balance adjustment...the drop-down box says "Camera Settings". I recognize in the video yours says "AUTO". Any idea why this may be?

Thank you for watching, usually when its greyed out it is because you are working with a JPG file. Try to use a RAW file and all the options should be available.

Can you show HOW to get the photos from a camera into DPP4? I plugged my card reader into my laptop (Mac book), opened DPP4 and cannot find any photos. Can you please explain how to find the photos to start with? I have clicked on the tabs for my card reader and also my photos tab from Apple and there's nothing there. Thank you.

Great suggestion! Thank you for watching, will look at something like that in the future, especially the blur background. Dom on the highlight and shadow warning on my settings, shadow is set at 64 highlights at 200 but in my photo’s I never see any parts on the photo blinking ?

Hi Charles, My Shadow threshold is set to 0 and Highlights to 255. I believe that is the default. If your shadows are set to 64 it should definitely show the blue clipping in some dark parts of the photo. Are you sure the show shadows/highlights is enabled? Try pushing Alt + M at the same time to enable or disable it.

When I go to edit image my brightness adjustment slider is not in blue it is white so no control. if i check auto lighting opt. then i get blue slider

Loved the video - very clear and easy to follow along. Not sure if you can answer this but when I did click on folders (as shown) all of my pictures (which were loaded by date) disappeared - any thoughts on where I should look for the missing files?

Hi Cheryl, thank you for watching and for the question. That's odd that they disappeared, you would need to confirm that the files are still in the folder on your computer and if they are I would then make sure you don't have any filters applied in DPP4. If you are filtering by Star Rating for example, and none of your photos have been ranked, you will not see anything. Try set all your filters to show all.

great video but how do export and save in raw. when I try it save it, it saves in tiff and does not give the raw file. Using ddp4 is now my first workflow then i like to go into Lightroom, but the tiff does not let me do certain things as I could if it was a CR2 or CRW3

Hi and thank you for the comment. Once you apply any changes to a RAW file it is no longer a RAW file once saved. DPP4 will let you save in Tiff or Jpeg but once any adjustments are made and saved it is no longer a true RAW file.

Good morning. So I’m stuck and have searched online and need help. So I have a Mac and I downloaded dpp4 so this is what I do: I insert my card and open the program and see my photos as cr3. However, how do I save them so I can clear my card and reuse. Do I need to convert all the cr3 in order to save them in the program? I don’t want to lose my raw files. Hope you can help me. Calling Canon is not fun.

Hi, thanks for the question. This is what I normally do, I insert my SD card into my PC. I create a new folder on my computers drive and name it whatever I choose. I then copy the RAW files from my card to my computer. I then open DPP4 and work from the RAW files and when I'm done I save them as JPEG files. This does not overwrite the RAW files so then I have a RAW file and A JPEG for each photo. You can create additional folders on your computer drive to keep them separate.

Thanks for the great video. This program is new to me. It won't let me adjust any images. All of the editing abilities are grayed out. Any suggestions?

Thanks for watching and for the question. DPP4 full functionality is available for use with RAW files. So if you are trying to edit a JPEG file it will not give you all the options. Try using a RAW file and you should have all the options available.

Hi Maurizio, thanks for watching and for the question. If you have a recipe file downloaded that is compatible with DPP4 then you can apply it by right clicking the photo and then selecting 'Read and Paste Recipe from file'. This will let you select the downloaded file,

This looks a lot like what I do in Bridge I just bought a Canon 200 and I have been trying to downlead the print app for 3 days

I've got a video coming out this week on how to merge photos in DPP4 for exposure bracketing. I'm pretty sure this will work for focus bracketing too. I'll try to test it at some point as there surely must be a way.

I would like to know why I am unable to use a feature: "perform basic image adjustment" Could you help me? thanks 😊

Hi Luis, Thanks for watching and for the question. I've been trying to find the answer to your question and apparently DPP4 is mainly for use with RAW files. So if you are trying to edit a JPEG file it will not give you all the options. Try using a RAW file and see if all the options are visable.

It does open JPG files, however not all the editing options are available for JPG images for some reason. It's like Canon designed to work best with RAW files. I would love if all the options were available for JPG as well.

Is it possible to saw more photos then one in raw Example: To convert 5 raw photos in jpg in same time, or have to do one by one?

Hi, thanks for watching and for the question. Yes it is possible and very easy to do. In the thumbnail view (The page that shows all the photo thumbnails) just select /highlight all the photos that you want to save as Jpg and then once they are all selected, click on the save icon above. This will open a window with all the selected photos listed so you van then choose the settings and the folder where you want to save them. This also works with multiple photos that you have edited, if you edit lots of photos and then wish to save them all, just select them all in the thumbnail view or select the ones that you've edited and click the save button. I hope this helps.

Hi Thanks for watching and for the great question. Unfortunately DPP has no add watermark feature, I wish it did as it would make life a lot easier. Hoping Canon will one day add this function. This is a great idea for another video though, I'll try to find the best and cheapest way to do this because I need to do that with some of my photos also.

Ok, I have a problem with DPP now, just upgraded to a Canon 90D and have issues with CR3 files. DPP give more accurate colors, what I see on the back of the camera come out nicely in dpp BUT it messes up the sharpness, looks like it has an aggressive noise reduction applied by default. PS and LR applies a flat/neutral color profile by default. Problems I did not have with the old CR2 files.

Hmmmm...have you tried to see if the sharpness setting in DPP4 has any sharpness applied by default? Mine is usually is set to 4 by default. I would set that to 0.

@@DomsMediaZone Found a workaround by setting any noise reduction in camera completely off, both high speed and long exposures, gives better results. Only wish there was an auto mode for quick exposure fixes. Auto gamma is horrible for some images

Nice video. How do you save the edits to a new RAW file? You only cover saving as a jpg. I do my edits and save, but when I open up the raw file outside of DPP4 it still shows the original image.

Thank you for watching and for the question, ones you edit a RAW file it is no longer considered a RAW file because now we have introduced our own information/settings to it. You can save it as a JPG or a different type but not RAW.

You're gonna want to send it to Photoshop as a RAW file so you have it there to fully manipulate.

I downloaded dppm4.14.0 package and it just says "Extracting Files" and quits - doesn't install the package. I had a very old one from the Canon 5D days. But can't install the newer one.

I am on a Mac. Resolution - sorry this is the only solution. Create a new temporary admin account - I created dppuser. I copied the dmg file to /tmp and changed the ownership to dppuser. But you can re-download from Canon website. Then the install will work. You can then either delete the dppuser account or just keep it around. You might consider taking admin access away from dppuser. This does require a reboot to create/delete/change user account dppuser.

Did some looking around on the internet and unfortunately it doesn't look like DPP4 does photo stitching. I did find a software called Photostitch on the Canon website but it won't let me download it as says it's not supported for Windows 10 so I'm guessing it's one of those discontinued software's.
