I feel like a lot of box office discourse recently has been "This movie saved cinema," or "This movie is killing cinema." Movie critics are being kinder to mediocre movies, like The Fall Guy, in hopes that it will bring more people to the theater, and every news article about box office performance seems either ecstatic or completely doom and gloom about the state of the box office. Dan, I appreciate that you don't fall victim to this drastic mindset, and instead give us objective and measured coverage of the box office
@OrionInSpace
16 күн бұрын
That’s how news gets talked about these days. It’s no longer just talking about the product itself, it’s about making talking points out of it. I never understood the idea of people saying “theaters are saved” after Inside Out 2’s success. It just felt like that was going to happen no matter what. I do however disagree with your view on The Fall Guy, I don’t think critics propped it up that way. Lots of people really like that movie it just got done a dirty hand.

Glad you reintroduced streaming charts! Feels right back in this show. Not to make more work for you 😬, but I think the streaming charts would benefit greatly by putting some of them in poster format similar to the box office charts. Visually streaming charts are just too easy to get lost in with how similar and plain they all look with the white rectangular box format. Some of the lesser value charts could stay this way but adding some visual interest to the newer release and year to date charts could help break that up. Just a thought. Always appreciate the show!

Love the show! And I really like moving the streaming numbers to Charts with Dan! Personally, that's my favorite data, and getting updated on that every week is awesome. Plus when it's all at once it can feel repetitive and bogged down with all the repeats. Having a smaller segment weekly allows it to breath a bit. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for continuing to put out great content :)
I like the streaming top listing, it's worth seeing again just for me and I am happy.
It was during this episode that I realized why I largely avoided the streaming charts. It's just a big info dump where Dan spends 15 minutes rattling off names of shows/movies and viewer count, largely with little to no information about the program. It's just a list, this came in first, this came in second, this came in third, this came in fourth, this came in fifth, etc. And then one week later, THIS came in first and THIS came in second and ... it's all just the same movies and shows. I enjoy the box office chart because you can go into detail about each movie, but the streaming charts is just a list with no real context.
The streaming charts were pretty cool. Great video as always.
Thank you for all the great work you do, man! Greatly appreciated! Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽 👌
Definitely like streaming stats at the end of this video
I’m starting to feel like after seeing how poorly Sound of Hope did that Sound of Freedom was pretty much a fluke for Angel (especially since they tried to make it seem like it was related to SoF when it wasn’t), especially since you can add up the total grosses for their releases since SoF and still come in significantly behind that film.
@Ebon_Sean
16 күн бұрын
I don't know that it was a fluke, so much as a confluence of several of exactly the right factors (which, now that I type it out, might be the textbook definition of a fluke) between the name ("Freedom in the title), the makeup of the cast, the specific subject matter (taking matters into one's own hands to rescue a vulnerable child), and the action movie-adjacent approach to the execution that caused Sound of Freedom to appeal to the conservative demographic in a way that Sound of Hope never had a prayer of replicating.
Good call being extra clear about the legs this week, Dan. I have nothing to add to the conversation at this time. 👍
Pixar does make films like the Despicable Me films, they’re called Cars. They have all the assets, they can churn them out and kids will reliably go out, watch the films, buy the toys

This was the first Minions/Despicable Me movie that didn’t have a load of anticipation or a great marketing campaign. So the fact that it didn’t quite reach the levels of the other movies in the franchise is not a bad sign for the franchise. If this movie had something similar to the “Gentleminions” from the last movie it would be right up there with the best openings in the franchise. Not to mentions Inside Out 2 probably took a bit of money out of Illumination this time around. Whether we like it or not Despicable Me and the Minions are still a behemoth and not on the decline yet.
cool stuff all-around. I think a quiet place day one is going to stream soon, that should be fun. I'm saving my money for Glen Powell in Twisters.
Great time for the box office! I saw Fly me to the Moon and really enjoyed it. Hoping for some sleeper success for that and Longlegs next week before Twisters and Deadpool take over. I don’t really care about streaming, but I can always click off early, so report away Dan! Great work as always.
Dracula untold doing numbers on netflix?? The "dark universe" is SO BACK babbbyyyyy!!!
It will be my head canon that Dan did the 5 day opening gross comparison based on my persistent comments about redefining the "official" opening weekend numbers to include movies opening on Tuesday-Thursday to include those numbers in addition to its Friday-Sunday numbers. 😅
wow, it's not often the throwback week makes me feel something - but 17 years ago for that first transformers movie, oof - that REALLY doesn't feel all too long ago lol.
I don't know if you'll go back to highlighting independent theatres, but I found a cute little one in Lyons, NY, today, and can't think of anyone else to share it with. It's called the Ohmann Theatre, after the man who built it over a hundred years ago, and has been used for live shows as well as motion pictures. It even has its own theatre organ, or at least it once did.
Barbie does indeed have great legs!
Whoa, the Streaming part took me by surprise!

But I do completely understand the idea of experimenting and trying to find the formula that works best for you personally. Just stating my preference.
How many movies do you actually see in a theater each week? I’d love to see you do a weekly recap talking about all the movies you watched in the week. Maybe you can recap reviews you already did as well as discuss the movies you didn’t think were good enough to have a dedicated review video. Would also like to see a preview video on upcoming releases for the next week. Perhaps discuss their trailers and how much you think they’ll make. I love your videos and reviewers. Suggestion for streaming charts. Can you put the data info - source (Netflix, Nielsen), type of data (movies vs streaming), period, etc in a prominent position at the top of the screen? Maybe abbreviate things use logos and such too so it’s really easy to tell. Right now with all the words in white at the bottom, it’s really hard to tell at a glance what data we’re looking at, and the screens all look the same. If I get distracted for one second I immediately lose track of what chart you’re talking about. Just a thought.
Inflation is getting pretty bad when adjusting for inflation changes the chart position of a movie from only last year.
Hey Dan, is Inside Out 2 the highest grossing film in Mexico adjusted for inflation or not adjusted?
I'm surprised about horizon. I saw it this weekend with my mom and we both thought it was pretty good. 60 seat theatre and there were probably only 10 seats at the very front that didn't have people in them.
