    I feel like a lot of box office discourse recently has been "This movie saved cinema," or "This movie is killing cinema." Movie critics are being kinder to mediocre movies, like The Fall Guy, in hopes that it will bring more people to the theater, and every news article about box office performance seems either ecstatic or completely doom and gloom about the state of the box office. Dan, I appreciate that you don't fall victim to this drastic mindset, and instead give us objective and measured coverage of the box office

  • @OrionInSpace

    That’s how news gets talked about these days. It’s no longer just talking about the product itself, it’s about making talking points out of it. I never understood the idea of people saying “theaters are saved” after Inside Out 2’s success. It just felt like that was going to happen no matter what. I do however disagree with your view on The Fall Guy, I don’t think critics propped it up that way. Lots of people really like that movie it just got done a dirty hand.

    Glad you reintroduced streaming charts! Feels right back in this show. Not to make more work for you 😬, but I think the streaming charts would benefit greatly by putting some of them in poster format similar to the box office charts. Visually streaming charts are just too easy to get lost in with how similar and plain they all look with the white rectangular box format. Some of the lesser value charts could stay this way but adding some visual interest to the newer release and year to date charts could help break that up. Just a thought. Always appreciate the show!

    It was during this episode that I realized why I largely avoided the streaming charts. It's just a big info dump where Dan spends 15 minutes rattling off names of shows/movies and viewer count, largely with little to no information about the program. It's just a list, this came in first, this came in second, this came in third, this came in fourth, this came in fifth, etc. And then one week later, THIS came in first and THIS came in second and ... it's all just the same movies and shows. I enjoy the box office chart because you can go into detail about each movie, but the streaming charts is just a list with no real context.

    I’m starting to feel like after seeing how poorly Sound of Hope did that Sound of Freedom was pretty much a fluke for Angel (especially since they tried to make it seem like it was related to SoF when it wasn’t), especially since you can add up the total grosses for their releases since SoF and still come in significantly behind that film.

  • @Ebon_Sean

    @Ebon_Sean

    16 күн бұрын

    I don't know that it was a fluke, so much as a confluence of several of exactly the right factors (which, now that I type it out, might be the textbook definition of a fluke) between the name ("Freedom in the title), the makeup of the cast, the specific subject matter (taking matters into one's own hands to rescue a vulnerable child), and the action movie-adjacent approach to the execution that caused Sound of Freedom to appeal to the conservative demographic in a way that Sound of Hope never had a prayer of replicating.

    This was the first Minions/Despicable Me movie that didn’t have a load of anticipation or a great marketing campaign. So the fact that it didn’t quite reach the levels of the other movies in the franchise is not a bad sign for the franchise. If this movie had something similar to the “Gentleminions” from the last movie it would be right up there with the best openings in the franchise. Not to mentions Inside Out 2 probably took a bit of money out of Illumination this time around. Whether we like it or not Despicable Me and the Minions are still a behemoth and not on the decline yet.

    I watched kill because of your review, movie was awsome, This movie lacks stars and known faces, thats why its mot earning well, even in indian market its not doing that good,but overall its day by day collection is increasing because of word of mouth.

But I do completely understand the idea of experimenting and trying to find the formula that works best for you personally. Just stating my preference.

    How many movies do you actually see in a theater each week? I’d love to see you do a weekly recap talking about all the movies you watched in the week. Maybe you can recap reviews you already did as well as discuss the movies you didn’t think were good enough to have a dedicated review video. Would also like to see a preview video on upcoming releases for the next week. Perhaps discuss their trailers and how much you think they’ll make. I love your videos and reviewers. I feel like a lot of what you like aligns with my tastes. And you got more numbers than a phone book. So keep up the good work!!!

    I used to do a preview video for every week, but no one watched 😕 I generally see at least one movie in theaters a week and I review about 90% of them. Every once in a while, I’ll see one and decide it wouldn’t make a very good review

    Suggestion for streaming charts. Can you put the data info - source (Netflix, Nielsen), type of data (movies vs streaming), period, etc in a prominent position at the top of the screen? Maybe abbreviate things use logos and such too so it’s really easy to tell. Right now with all the words in white at the bottom, it’s really hard to tell at a glance what data we’re looking at, and the screens all look the same. If I get distracted for one second I immediately lose track of what chart you’re talking about. Just a thought.

    I'm surprised about horizon. I saw it this weekend with my mom and we both thought it was pretty good. 60 seat theatre and there were probably only 10 seats at the very front that didn't have people in them.
