Revisiting the DOWNFALL of Game of Thrones | Video Essay

Фильм және анимация

In this video essay, we break down the infamous Downfall of Game of Thrones. With House of the Dragon Season 2 here, and it being 5 years since GoT concluded with the disastrous Season 8 I figured, let's take a deep dive look into the downfall of one of the greatest TV Shows ever made. Many people point the finger at season 8 for the downfall of Game of Thrones, but the truth is, it started long before that. We dive into it all!

Tyrion teasing Brienne about being a virgin and Sansa saying her abuse wasn’t so bad because it made her smart were some of the most painful scenes in season 8.

The whole Sansa arc was a f up, she should have outwitted Little finger in the Eerie and be the one who leads the Vale into battle with the Boltons. Not because of any Feminist bollocks but because it would be right. Jon and his boys head South, recover Osha and Rickon then send a Raven to the Vale requesting help. Aryas story is in Kings Landing and should only reunite at the end.Bran should stay stuck in a tree warging and using his powers, he certainly shouldn't be King in fact the Monarchy destruction should be the end.

@@dmac3183 Exactly. Sansa's been in King's Landing this whole time observing politics. Her arc should have been about learning from Cersei and Littlefinger how to be a political powerhouse, ending in her outwitting Littlefinger in a "student becomes the master" type arc.

@@ACinemafanatic This is what I dislike about the Mad Queen theory: the mad part. I think insanity is a cheap, lazy plot device to have characters do illogical things without having to explain it beyond "oh, she's crazy". I can live with ruthless Daenerys, but not mad Daenerys. And even the real history which inspired Martin has an interesting equivalent to Daenerys: King Henry VII of England. What's very interesting about him is this: he's a very paranoid individual, no one likes him, BUT he never became a homocidal psychopath. He'd rather fine his enemies than kill them. At the end of the day, Henry took a kingdom in turmoil after decades of civil war and stabilized it, filled its coffers and left his son, Henry VIII the first peaceful/uncontested transfer of power after a very long time. No one liked him, but he was a competent king. He was devious and paranoid, but not insane. I think an equivalent ending for Daenerys would be much more interesting: she wins the throne and becomes a competent ruler, but she never finds peace of mind, popularity, love, safety (embodied by the house with the red door in the books).

They didn’t even run out of book material. Seasons 1 and 2 roughly adapted to A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings respectively. Seasons three and four split up A Storm of Swords. Season 5 stuffs parts of A Feast For Crows and A Dance of Dragons while season 6 is mostly new material with bits of leftover book plot conveniently peppered peppered throughout. If they had adapted Feast and Dance as thoroughly as they did the first three, they could have gotten two to three more seasons of just book material. Where needed for pacing they could have gone off the rails a bit but so much never made it from page to screen and it sucks.

I'll just never understand, D&D had the chance to become, undeniably the greatest TV show writers in goddammed history, all they had to do, was to give the best ending possible to one if not the greatest show in history. Imagine having the world, literally and arguably, at the writing of the palms of your hands, and just fuck it up. It's crazy to think. The ending wasn't because they aren't good writers, they wrote a lot of original content for the show that wasn't in the books, that were pretty great, the best example is the scenes for Robert Baratheon or Robb Stark. They fuck up just because they wanted to. That's just unforgivable.

This show is a prime example of what happens when show runners get god complexes. The final season is so horrible there is no way the other writers didn't point out the many glaring flaws to D&D. But they had one of the most successful TV shows of all time which they felt solely responsible for and felt they could do no wrong at this point. If they were simply patient and continued the formula of the early seasons AND actually followed GRRMs notes this show would've been their magnum opus. I watched the first episode of this "show" after people were telling me how awesome it was. I said it right at the end: so fire girl and snow guy hook up and rule at the end. Never watched another episode, because this was basically soap opera. Until my girlfriend said I had to watch this one "amazing" episode. She gave me a modicum of back story and I said: so the king obviously kills the whole family, right? She just deflated. I never understood what people liked about this. It's terrible and predictable. The accents are atrocious and all over the map. Anyone seriously wanna claim that Tywin and Tyrion are even from the same country, let alone the same family? And come on, try, just TRY to convince me that Daenerys looks like a warrior queen in the slightest, with those puffy arms. This was an actress that had never lifted anything heavier than 25 lbs in her life, and it showed. Anybody really think Vaserys made it that far in life, in that world, with that personality? Get bent, this was a good show. Garbage.

"You perfectly summed up my issues with Seasons 7-8: The action only matters if you're invested in the characters and events as part of the overall narrative. Action for action's sake is a waste of time." I would alter this statement a little bit. "Action for actions sake in a show like Game of thrones is a waste of time". There are alot of franchises out there which contains basically nothing else than action. I dont think the Fast and Furios Franchise is comprised of fans which fawn over the fantastic Dialogs ( FAMILY!!!!!) or the MCU, which was the other big thing in the 2010s, with big budget action festivals. In which superheroes with superplot armor fought against a myriad of faceless antagonists. Game of Thrones premise shouldn´t have worked as a mainstream show. It is still amazing to me, that a show which can be bleak,slow,dialogue-heavy and brutal ( I mean in the very first episode a random guy was beheaded, a young woman was sold and taken by a big, wild guy and a young child was pushed out a window from a guy who just had sex with his twin)was capable of THAT SUCCESS that Game of Thrones had. In the later seasons, especially after speedruning through the source material the show became excatly that. A mainsteam, marvelized spectacle with basically Fast and Furios Dialogue.

The thing was, D&D hated fan theory and wanted to subvert fan expectations above all else. So when fans picked up on little plot seeds that were planted in previous seasons and guessed the ending of some arcs, they decided to just say “fuck those carefully planted seeds and all the justification we built, let’s just do something random”. Danny going mad didn’t faze me quite as much as fucking Arya killing the Night King. Like what??? Exactly. The pleasure of paying close attention to a tv show is picking up those breadcrumbs and shouting “I KNEW IT! Didn’t I say! YESSSS” at the screen when you are right. Not… being surprised because something comes out of nowhere for no reason? Yeah, shock value, but then you sit there more confused the more you think about all those little things you picked up on. And there is no rewatchability unless you have those threads to follow, so nobody buys the dvds or keeps the streaming views up. The only thing you get through pure surprise is a momentary trend on Twitter.

Instead they make their leader a dark lord archetype which went against George RR Martin’s vision which was his world had no central evil dark lord but rather there was always new villains and threats to take the places of the previous. The wall had so much untapped potential as besides the White Walkers and zombies/skeletons in the books there are other supernatural threats and monsters and creatures and dangers that threated the world of mankind to have sealed off by the ice wall to keep from escaping. Trolls that acted as monkey’s paw type genies, ice spiders, evil spirits and gods, etc. The White Walkers weren’t the only thing that threatened humanity. it would have been so easy to make the night king an actual treat, make him swarm winterfell with some of his army and meanwhile try and sneak past winterfell with the rest of the army (taking a longer route around winterfell) to siege kingslanding. make dany or jon see them and warn the others, some characters like jamie and tyrion go with the dragons, as they are faster than viserion, so they'll get to kings landing faster than the night king and they have jamie to convince cersei. Make jon, bran and sansa go to kings landing, while they ask arya to come with them, but she stays in winterfell, stating that their mother always told them, that a stark must always be in winterfell. This way we actually sacrifice important characters and might feel their loss later on in kings landing. Making cersei and dany the bad guys over the literal personification of death is the worst decision.

  • @ParkerCS2

    @ParkerCS2

    2 күн бұрын

Exactly. The personification of Death (aka the Great Others) was the most important threat being a god or gods/entities or a supernatural force manifested into reality like a virus. It was a unique approach unlike other fantasy worlds that have dark lords or evil tyrannical archetypes (which GOT later made the exact same mistake of making The Night Kikg, who wasn’t even in the books, as a dark lord type like Voldemort or Sauron) as the whole point George established was that there wasn’t a central evil but rather there was always new threats whether it be human or supernatural. The White Walkers stopped being scary when they became a hive mind instead of a dark magic that was manifested and/or manipulated by the leaders to create endless ranks to cause eternal chaos to the world. I like to think of the God of Death as like Death (The Grim Reaper) from Final Destination which wasn’t a stereotypical horror slasher nor a literal entity but a supernatural abstract force of nature. Same was for the White Walkers and Wights in first couple seasons of GOT before they became a collective consciousness from the warging of the Night King and his lieutenants and body guards like the Borg. 🙄🤦 really stupid and lame imo

Why the F does a storyteller make a good king?!?! 🤷‍♂️🤦 It’s like if a good published author was immediately put into office as President despite not having the qualifications nor a proper run of an election. It’s stupid. Bran was interesting as a character born with supernatural abilities and natural magic within him similar to other wargs, but he practically did nothing with it. All he did was take over the minds and bodies of animals and sometimes astral projection. No further powers he demonstrated such as potentially telekinesis, pyrokinesis (which would be useful against ice zombies especially), and also that time traveling using his powers didn’t amount to much. Why introduce time travel to a high fantasy world?! It at first seemed like just seeing into the past, but clearly he was unintentionally interacting with the world and events but yet stops. At least with Harry Potter they only did the time watch thing once because too many meddlings with time could create chaotic problems and paradoxes and diverging timelines which could harm their present. It would’ve been interesting for him to experiment more with dark science and magic to replicate the Wights and weaponize them as loyal slaves/soldiers just like Sir Gregor the Mountain. Imagine him also studying the remains of the White Walker Wights and extracting some of their properties to combine with alchemy and sorcery to create his own versions of Wights. And if the White Walkers were able to try to invade king’s landing he could use his own undead to combat theirs. And also imagine Frankenstein Mountain fighting some White Walkers and Wights himself and holding his own.

  • @ParkerCS2

This show also forgets about the Lord of Light & God of Death, The Many Faced God, The Great Others (the gods that the White Walkers worship from the books), the Seven (New Gods), and the Old Gods in the final season as well like those important religions never existed. Although to be fair the Seven lost its importance after S6 and was implied to be the only religion that possibly wasn’t true as many the religions were up to interpretation of be all real or different beliefs of the same divine higher power(s) and was all up to interpretation as holy supernatural power or just elemental magic similar to what wizards and witches manipulate and use. The New Gods were the only religious belief that never showed any proof they existed. As again Martin’s world wasn’t meant to literally confirm stuff like if they are gods or just abstract magic and supernatural forces but not necessarily entities. And yet despite the fact some people who died claimed there was no afterlife it’s not exactly true that there isn’t life after death but rather it’s rather realistic like our real world where it’s not ever explicitly confirmed and anything is possible. That demonic spirit or shadow creature that lady Messandra summons using her witchcraft/magic or religious ritual to her god to have help assassinate Stannis’ brother may be the evidence to support that prove souls or ghosts exist in this fantasy world. Also Rickon tells Bran he had a dream of his father saying goodbye to him like as if perhaps his spirit was going to the great beyond after getting executed.

I also have an issue with the casting changes on HotD. Anyone who has read the book knows the young characters in story were in their late teens/early 20s when the main conflict erupted. The show already had actors who were the right age playing these characters but then they decided to "age them up", so now we have people aged 25 to 29 playing 17 to 21 year old characters. Meanwhile, the women who play their mothers are 30/32. It's so profoundly stupid.

Wouldn't Dany of having two dragons for the negotiations at kings landing with Cersei of made more sense? Cersei unloading all the scorpions on the wall towards Danys dragons and taking one out there would of been a more reasonable time for her to snap as she considers them her children.

Season 4 was the beginning of the end. I knew from the moment they removed the Tysha subplot rhat was intefral to Tyrion's arx and Jaime's arcs, that they were not going to have a good plot moving forward or good characterization. And i was right. Jaime is no longer a redeemed person who abandons Cersei to try and fix the war torn kingdom. He never tells Tyrion the truth and Tyrion never learna tbat he actually was loved unconditionally by someone.

Season 4 was also when they definitively dropped Lady Stoneheart, which fucked up Jaime, Brienne, and Arya's arcs as well. This is kind of an unpopular take (at least outside of book circles), but for me the changes GoT made in s2 did a lot of damage as well. Dany and Jon's arcs were pretty butchered in s2. The changes surrounding the Red Wedding that start to happen in s2 lead to them being unable to adapt the northern plot lines properly. seasons 1-4 were great television, but in my opinion seasons 2 onward were not good adaptations of the material.

Pirates of the Caribbean also wasn’t only about ship battles and sword swinging and supernatural threats, but was also about the relationships and back and forths between the characters and ideologies that contradicted the others. Like pirates were already portrayed as “bad guys” but some were more Robin Hood esc figures who cared about honor and giving back to the innocent unlike the government which cared little about the needs of the people. But still there were evil pirates who are the complete opposites to Captain Jack Sparrow which was the ideal example the government would have be propaganda towards the normal folk to point an obvious enemy while still doing evil actions themselves such as having dictating jurisdictions over the seas or finding treasures or magical artifacts like the fountain of youth or whatever else and not caring who gets in their way whether it be pirates or bystanders. Pirates of the Caribbean was the Disney version of Game of Thrones but for films.

I think the creators misunderstood the reason for the show’s early success. Whenever I heard random people talking about GoT while it was running, the conversation always included “no character is safe from death, so you are always surprised”. I think the creators learned the wrong lesson: surprise (shock value) = success. But instead, it was good character development that drove the early success. They ended up sacrificing all that character development in pursuit of “what is the most shocking next thing that could happen?”.

I am so happy that House of the Dragon exists, because for three years GoT was to me only the bad memories of seasons 7-8. Within just a few episodes HotD healed me, it reminded me of all the masterful episodes in seasons 1-4, and it has managed to make them my predominant memory of GoT. Even if HotD ends on a mediocre note I am insanely grateful that show exists so I could once again fall in love with my favorite fantasy series.

@@little.tricks it was really bizarre. Not everything in the final season was bad, there were some good parts but still so much felt so unsatisfying for a finale. The protagonist makes a gruesome decision that’s so out of left field, the story of S4 is backwards, they shoved some of the old characters to force in some new ones(One getting a ridiculous death and the other old characters just get little screen time), The overall message is really weird, etc etc etc. what’s even worse is that some fans gets so upset when you point out the flaws of the final season and they just scream out that it’s “perfection”. What made GOT very successful is Scene design. GRRM mastered the art of Scenario Design. The Queen, her Brother and a Kid. That was the scene that set the tone of how the show was going to go. But before that scene, he crafted the Direwolf, the Stag and the Starks Scene. Buy designing great scene from scenarios, GOT became a great success. The latar part of she show focused on the story and not the scenes and the scenes suffered.
