    Kidnapped is apparently based on a true story that happened in the 1860s. At one point Spielberg was going to make a movie of it (I think with Oscar Isaac) but I think he couldn't find a little boy that fit the part.

    Most of those "bottom 10" movies went on to do quite well. Not 'Tomorrowland,' and I think 'Cobra' was a bit of a disappointment, but these were big money makers over the course of their summers. And Google-AI (sigh) says 'Backdraft' was the highest Memorial Day non-sequel opening at the time...

    Hi, Dan. Great content as always! In your video you mentioned three reasons for dismal theater numbers--the recent strikes; consumer behavior; and unappealing movies. I want to add a fourth reason that I would LOVE to have you examine on your show: theater closures. I live in rural America; my town hasn't had a movie theater since the 80s. Even so, we had theater options 15-30 minutes away. I think in large part to due the pandemic on top of an already struggling economy the two theaters that were 30 minutes away and the one theater that was 45 minutes away are now closed. So now, if I want to see a movie, I have to drive for TWO HOURS on top of the run time of the movie and the ads before the show. What I'm saying is that I think that there are many people like me who want to patronize movie theaters again but for whom doing so has become increasingly impractical. I know that on your show you highlight small, picturesque, independent movie theaters, some that were reclaimed by cinephile citizens. Not every small town has one of those. I think it would be really interesting if you did a chart, map, or some kind of infographic on the cinema deserts that exist now. I know that I definitely live in one. Where I live the mid-market movie theaters that did reopen after the pandemic simply weren't able to stay open thru the end of 2023/early 2024.

    Movie theater experience sucks now. I always dread someone is going to talk or use their phone and ruin my experience. The only movie I plan on seeing in theaters this summer is Twister--going to treat myself for my birthday.

    Last year, people cried of superhero and comic book movie fatigue. This year, after quite a few months of original films, biopics, and standalone sequels, it looks like this year’s box office hinges entirely on… Deadpool and Wolverine and Joker 2. Audiences are *truly* unpredictable.

    The only movie I went out to see in the theatres this year was Dune ii. It's the only 2024 movie I've seen honestly. Perhaps I'll catch Challengers at some point, when I go through the catalogue of the director, but nothing else has remotely interested me, let alone excited me to rush out for on opening weekend. I'm not even sure I'll end up watching Deadpool iii at this rate. Up until Quantum Realm my friends and I would rush out for all the MCU movies. But that died and I can't remember the last time us, a big group of nerds, have gone out to see a thing at the movies since Barbenhiemer (we did the double feature just for the meme). This year we've gone to a few musicals, but no other movies aside from Dune ii. But perhaps we're not a good sample size. I can only speak for myself, but there's not a single movie in the summer box office that remotely interests me. Deadpool comes close, but my personal disinterest in the MCU hasn't subsided.

    For me it's been the theatrical experience that's finally keeping me away. Bad or broken seats, expensive treats, and rude people are the norm these days. It's a real shame because I used to see at least one film in theaters per week prior to the pandemic. I finally went back on the regular in 2021 and 2022. But I started having some back issues so the halfway recliners didn't work for me. Plus AMC in general has just gone downhill to the point where I canceled my AMC A List last year. Now I just wait for PVOD for certain films and longer for others. I saw Challengers last week and the Fall Guy. Would like to see Civil War but it might be too pricey at PVOD right now when it'll likely be on Max by August if not sooner. Do I hate the theatrical experience? Well yes but not in terms of seeing a film in the big screen with the excellent sound quality. If you can find it. But I just invested in a solid at home theater setup (65 inch OLED with Sonos subs) and I'm pretty happy.

    Dan, are theaters paid to show the trailers for future movies? Is it lucrative? I sure hope that theaters don’t have to pay distributors since most theater goers are annoyed by the 20 minutes of trailers.

    37:00 Yikes, remember when a wildly historically inaccurate "epic" starring Mel Gibson could win Best Picture? (I'm Scottish; do NOT get me started.) About the only good thing about that film is the music.) Not that things have really improved all that much in recent years, looking at Green Book...

Most of the time, I don’t even check actuals. 😂😂😂❤ pretty sure you will get more viewerships. If you are doing estimate why not move it to when Movie Math or OMB. Their show comes out way early than yours. I love your show with your different takes and content and format but It would have been awesome to get it the same as theirs. Timing is important. The early bird catches the worm hehehe just an opinion as a viewer ❤❤❤

    Slowly, over the years, I found only MCU movies worth going to the theater for (and I'd go opening weekend, to avoid being spoiled). But phase 4 burned me and the last movie I paid to see in theaters was Doctor Strange 2. And there's nothing on the horizon that I'm interested in (I'm not going to see the new Deadpool -- I didn't see the first two either).

    How much do normal people go to see movies now. I used to see 20-30 movies a year in theatre, now I go to about 2 or 3. I think the new premium cost of the movie, and how it will be available for streaming 3-4 months after its release makes going out not worth it anymore.

    I saw Furiosa on Sunday night here in the UK - I thought it was good, but only captured the sublimity of Fury Road in the middle sections. The opening seemed a bit too CGI-y (maybe because Dementus' horde and the many different landscapes would be too hard to do practically) and the final act felt like a bit of an anti-climax. The middle (particularly from the beginning of the Stowaway section to the death of [SPOILER]) was great, though.

    I just saw it and it's one big chase film that's over long. It's repetitive and boring. I had no idea what the bad guys wanted and was not interested. The pacing of the film is slow with convoluted action sequences. Chris Hemsworth is the biggest problem. He is like a second rate LOTR character with a bad prosthetic. He acts like Jack Sparrow and is very fake and hammy. Just awful acting. Film looks good but is hollow. Ana was the best thing in it. Huge presence with expressive eyes that didn't need dialogue to convey emotions.

    Hollywood has trained people to stay home. Too many movies are bad, underwhelming and, some, off putting. (Yes, I’m one of those people that doesn’t like woke stuff. I don’t care if you don’t like me for it.). The cost of movies and concessions has gotten too high to go to the theaters to see something that probably isn’t going to be good and, finally, movies are hitting streaming very quickly, so, why not just wait? (However, If it’s woke, I won’t be watching it on streaming either.). Did I mention that I don’t like woke stuff?😂

    21:00 Hey Dan, chart idea for next week (or when you have time) percentage of movies (in wide release) each year that opened to $100+ million vs opened lower. Maybe also average & median opening weekends for the year? I think people got too complacent with $100+ million opening weekends. I don't think they were ever as common as people seem to think. Also, as much as I'm tired of hearing the phrase I think it applies here: "This is the new normal."

  • @KeithFraser82
    @KeithFraser822 сағат бұрын

    Yes, I think the 2010s, especially the late 2010s, were a bit of an anomaly for blockbusters making giant amounts of money. I think that "event movie" zeitgeist (which has probably happened in other periods in history as well) has come to an end with the pandemic, streaming etc. I don't think many people are doing things like seeing an "event movie" 2 or 3 or 5 or 10 times in the cinema, for example (not that tens of millions of people were doing that, but more than now).

    Honestly I think there should be more strikes. Especially from Animators and VFX artists. They need it the most. Its too bad they don't get enough respect. Especially VFX artists. Even the audience doesn't like them. The audience of online discourse about hating CGI is a problem. Double edge sword.

    As usual no one considers inflation when looking at discretionary spending. Wages have still not caught up to increases in housing and food. That means people have less money to go see a movie. And when you consider you can watch all the movies with a couple of streaming services which is so muhc cheaper for a family of 4, how is this at all surprising? You sound like Kodak when digital cameras were becoming a thing, or Blockbuster when streaming was emerging.

  • @RichardLaughlin
    @RichardLaughlin2 сағат бұрын

    The poor performance is totally unsurprising. No one is making films worth putting on pants, driving a car, waitinf in line, and being extorted for popcorn and soda to see. The theatre experience is sub par compared to the convenience and quality I can get at home, so I'd rather just wait to see it at home when I get around to it. Unless the film is some cultural phenomenon, theres enough other content available at home on-demand.

  • @KeithFraser82
    @KeithFraser822 сағат бұрын

    People don't *have* to buy overpriced popcorn and soda to watch a film. Admittedly I mostly go to cinemas where you have a much better choice of food and drink which can be brought to you at your seat (e.g. I watched Furiosa with a cold beer).
