Moana’s popularity is insane. On average 3 million people (presumably families) just throw it on and watch it, once a week on average, like every week of the year. I assume they just need a random movie to throw on to keep the kids happy but I wonder how that came to be specifically Moana for so many people. There’s a lot of good animated kids movies out there, and most of them are on streaming.

I mean encantos been on the list a lot too, I was surprised at how popular Moana has been on streaming too, but I think that's just a product of timing and age groups. And that it is a good movie with good music. There was a period where I as a small child apparently watched lion king 3 times a day, and that was back before DVDs. If U get the kids with the right movie at the right age, they'll re-watch it a million times. I think the fact that the male and female main characters in Moana have about equal importance to the story and no romantic relationship also helps make it more appealing to more kids, sometimes kids refuse to like something because it's "for boys" or " has kissy face" or whatever

Bluey released a 28 minute special, The Sign, on April 14 (the second of three long delayed episodes released in April that closed out the staggered release of Season 3, which began all the way back in November 2021), so I would attribute the sudden jump to #2 to that, and I suspect that Bluey gave Fallout some stiffer competition the following week (unless Fallout viewership fell off a cliff, and I'm pretty sure it didn't, I would be surprised if Bluey takes the #1 spot, but I would guestimate it had close to 30m hours watched for the following week, considering the size of the spike for just one day). Even as an adult Bluey fan, I was surprised how much the episode was talked about online, with Ryan Reynolds (or at least his production company--I don't know how much direct involvement he had) even making a parody live-action commercial for real estate website Zillow, narrated by one of Bluey's voice actors (Dan Brumm, the voice of Uncle Stripe and brother of Joe Brumm, the creator of the show). The third episode, called Surprise, was released on April 21, and despite being leaked over a year ago in India, it had a massive surprise ending (for those who stayed away from spoilers) that also created some buzz and debate for the show and its future (in more ways than one).

Love the nerdy data, one question on normalizing on the watch time per episode. Is that normalized for episode length? I thought at one time you were dividing by the amount of run time of the episodes, but in this data it seems like the divisor is the number of episodes instead. Isn't that going to privilege longer episode length shows too much? I thought the idea was that if two shows both have 1 million viewers you want them to be equal and don't want the one with 20 episodes to seem twice as good as the one with 10 episodes, but if the divisor is number of episodes instead of length of run time, now if one show has approx 30 minute episodes while the other has approx 1 hour episodes if both get 1 million viewers the watch time per episode will privilege the longer show. Seems like the denominator for measuring should be the sum of the episode length of all the episodes so neither the show with the longer episodes nor the show with more episodes would do better just because of structure in the normalized metrics. Also, if there is a chance for some version of this to go even deeper on some of the other categories that would be great. Like I'd be interested to know how the various original animated series stack up (Arcane, Blue Eyed Samurai, Invincible, Castlevania, Inside Job, Love Death + Robots, Bojack, She-Ra, XMen 97, Star Wars Bad Batch, etc.). Maybe once or twice a year to round up that aspect as well?

  • @DanMurrellMovies

It's by number of episodes and it's a general metric. I'd love to get into the weeds on every single thing, but it's just not possible given the somewhat limited range of people who are even interested in this data. The time spent wouldn't be worth it. Every metric has its own blind spots and disadvantages, which is why I present several. The hope is that looking at everything in totality begins to make the picture clearer.

Not surprised. While Fallout not perfect its the best video game adaptation. While Last of Us is the better written show, it keeps it game aspects completely out (especially the lack of various infected, as if its ashamed of it) Fallout feels like im watching the game. Season 2 soon please!

What I really liked about the Fallout show, compared to most other adaptations is that it's a new story. It adds a new tale to the world instead of retelling an existing one. On top of that, it also succeeds in making it feel like your archetypal Fallout narrative. Like you said, it's flawed but I would definitely love more adaptations that expand on the universe they're set in. Like how cool would it have been if Netflix had made a series about one of the other avatars instead of Aang? Or if they made a Last of Us spin off about completely new characters in that world? There's a lot of creativity and new stories to be had even in existing IP's and they should really capitalize on it.

The last of us is only better written because the source material is barely a game. Game adaptaions suck because there is usually no real narative to pull from.

The last of us was good, but completely lacked the video game aspects of the show It only showed infected people 3-4 times throughout the series, and to be honest the story is not that cohesive meaning it’s more like one-off episodes Fall out wasn’t perfect but it was very video game accurate and had 3-4 storylines with main characters running at the same time interconnected

What makes Fallout so good is the fact that its the total package. From the lore to the special effects, Fallout delivers but What makes it really special is the acting, which is my opinion is Emmy worthy. Both Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins deliver excellent performances that are funny, dark and heartbreaking (Episode 8 alone should be given to Emmy voters for consideration for Purnell and Goggins superb acting).
