Derrick Bird : The Cumbria Massacre

Derrick Bird spent his life resenting his brother and believing everyone else was conspiring against him. When he thought that even his own brother and lawyer were working against him, he decided to silence all of the people who were working against him.

@@hypticnosisgaming No evidence that Bird had any grudges against anyone or had any history of violence. He was described by people who knew him as a nice person. If you look into what Derrick and his brother David were doing prior to that day you'll discover that they were in talks with Kevin Commons about pursuing a legal case against United Utilities because Commons had evidence to show they were responsible for causing the floodings in 2005 and 2009. Thirlmere Reservoir was allowed to overfow and burst its banks due to the excess rainfall, this caused flooding not only the villages but to a bridge which resulted in the death of a police officer. Had Commons' case been successful it may've resulted in the prosecution of United Utilities CEOs. Now isn't it just a strange co-incidence that Kevin Commons and Derrick's brother David were shot dead that day. There are a number of witnesses who saw the gunman with short dark spikey hair driving a maroon Citroen Picasso, Bird's was silver/grey and he was in his 50s.

@@wowplayer160 I’ve never thought of doing it yet I’ve had the capability to for a long time. Only time I’ve “used” a gun was when I brandished a revolver to a car jacker, and I thank God he ran. I’ve had firearms since I was 13, and lots of them. In middle school we were able to take guns to school to go hunting when class was out; they’d be locked up in the principal’s office. In high school all my friends and I, and many other students, had shotguns and rifles (including AR15s) on our gun racks in our pickups. Many fights were had and none of us ever grabbed a gun after the fight, nor did anyone threaten to do so. This was in 2001-2007. Something has drastically changed the past 15 years or so, and it’s sad as hell. A large portion of the population has gone completely bonkers or turned into ideologues (like the Buffalo shooter). I wish I had the answer to stop all this senseless killing, but there’s so many factors at play that it’s probably impossible, even with gun control that actually works. Maybe we need to bring back the insane asylums, but with a humane twist to it.

But idk… if the siblings didn’t want to take care of their father and literally made no attempt to even try to do so, they should’ve be able to keep the inheritance. Whether that sibling took care of him or they put him in a facility, both options would be expensive. And those options come out of the estate. So the siblings do nothing and foot zero bills or sacrifice their time to help care for their father but then they collect his money when he dies. I bet if the father’s wishes had been exactly what the one sibling suggested, the other siblings wouldn’t have followed the father’s wishes then lol. It’s easy to follow their father’s wishes when those wishes are “here. Take my money•

The husband and wife who were both shot just down the street from one another, neither knowing what had happened to one or what would ultimately happen to the other. So unbelievably cruel and heartbreaking, and I can’t help but wonder if one another crossed their minds briefly before passing. I’ll never understand the act of taking out others in this manner, or just taking another person’s life period. What’s scary is knowing that there are many people out there who suffer with a mental illness or have become increasingly paranoid to where thoughts of committing such atrocities has crossed their minds … they’re out there, and we never know until it’s too late. I just hope whoever and wherever they are, they’ve sought out help and are doing better. These types of tragedies should never happen.

I can't understand why people leave their doors unlocked, even in peaceful areas. When I lived in a really bad crime area, I used to flip out on my roommates for forgetting to lock the door when they came in, and now that I live in a peaceful area, I still always lock it as soon as I get inside. Your door is the barrier to the outside world, why would you not secure it? It's easier than buckling a seatbelt which people consider to be common sense; it's confounding to me that so many people don't bother to do it.

The front door on my mom’s house doesn’t even lock (Lock broke years ago). Sometimes when she leaves she just leaves the door open so the dogs can go in and out. We don’t need to live in fear of each other. If someone wants to get into your house, they know how to even if the door is locked.

I remember going to Pattaya Beach in Thailand when my unit participated in the Cobra Gold deployment in 2003. We were stationed at a small Thai Marine "base" and when the weekend came everyone that was allowed to, headed straight for Pattaya Beach and then to Walking Street where all the Go Go bars were. Because of the exchange rate everything was insanely cheap. The women that worked in those bars were BEAUTIFUL and could rob you blind if you weren't careful. When you had to take a Baht bus out there, the drivers had zero issue with breaking every traffic law you could possibly imagine for about $3 American. They were little Isuzu pickup trucks with cages built on the back and they had no issue with sharing their bottle of Thai whiskey with you on the trip out there. I'm not sure why there were any traffic lights built in the area because none of the drivers gave a shit about them. Beautiful country and culture.

This is a terribly sad story from such a magic part of the world. Derrick's growing paranoia was fuelled by his unfortunate life experiences, but he was obviously consumed by these feelings of persecution. How sad that he failed to think of his own sons and how this rampage would've affected them. But maybe he was too far gone by then & it's possible that the head injury he received had further muddled his thinking. Whatever the cause, a dozen innocent people lost their lives for no reason.

I feel no sympathy for him like some people commenting on here. There are many people who suffer from delusions and never turn violent. He had a better chance of getting help than many others but chose not to get it. This demon chose to take the lives of innocent people and then take the coward's way out. If he was going to do that all along, if he knew his life would be forfeit, he should have just done the right thing and skipped all the way to the end.

A few years before, we were in Seascale, and were walking our dog up what is called the cinder path. We spoke to the twin sister who was killed. She spoke of how she fed the birds, sych a lovely lady, so sad. There are lots of little back roads from Workington to where Derek killed himself. This is why he evaded the police for so long. It was such a shock when the news broke, the people of Cumbria are such friendly people, you just don't hear cases like that there. Those poor people that he shot, just innocently getting on with what they thought was an ordinary day. Rest in peace to those poor victims, so sorry for their families loss.

Man, paranoia is such a toxic festering thing and it can literally occur from just a person having a slightly off perspective of a situation that they see right before their eye's.. Perspective is such a powerful thing, if you become self aware enough and to have the willingness to allow yourself to be vulnerable, that will allow you to gain inner strength, because everyone should be able to express their inner insecurities, it could help that person find some bit of peace from them which could start your personal journey of self realization of that "oh, I didn't even know, I was looking at everything ALL wrong." And hopefully a moment like that can help show a glimpse of just how powerful of a tool perspective is and the reality is we all have our own ability to be in control of our perspective, if used right you find that you gain this inner strength of being able to chose how you chose to respond and react to anything. The part tho that makes that not universally known is that you can only get there to that place of inner peace/strength/belief that everything will somehow someway be okay even if I never know ahead of time: How it will be? - find the strength with-in you to be okay to say you're nervous, its uncomfortable, its hard to not always have the answers but use your power of Perspective as Tool to Observe Nature, and let it be a sort of guide towards the manner in which the Natural world around us functions and if you look long enough and just allow yourself to observe, explore, lean into walking around Nature, really observe the systems that which the Natural world functions by, if you look just right, its possible to gain this perspective of our Natural world and see that it has this sorta systems, basic ways it functions by for each system with-in its structure of its foundation. Observe that long enough, and you can see that no matter how harsh or chaotic nature and the world may be, that it always finds a way of not wasting anything. That goes for everything, so given that, try to see that even tho from one perspective its really harsh to see Salmon work that hard to get up stream inland from the sea just to be forced to face death and some may feel sadness (that's good, you can and should, don't not allow it) let some bit of time to go by so you can decompress and you'll now have a chance to reassess. If you step back, observe, let time go by after the fish die, you'll see the remaining pieces to this ecosystems function. The harshness is just one junction of a converting function, that is an integral part of how this ecosystem can even function. Nature might have inescapable harsh moments to it that of course might seem unfair but in reality what's really what would be unfair? Is if nature truly did let harshness occur for it to just really actually let it Not care, waste it, doesn't matter, does nothing but take away and be wasteful.... That would be truly unfair. BUT you see, it took me awhile to get past this sense of agony too. I think its only natural. Like *going through those points in life where you learn to ride a bike, or are driven to move out on your own to go thru that faze of leaving home, telling your parents you can do this on your own.~ I'm going to wrap this up. We are back observing time pass by after all the fish die. You start to see to kinda have these moments of glimpses where you see things somehow someway finding a way for itself to be applied, its like Nature doesn't let death die, it has these systems that give a natural place for that initial harshness to be, then convert it into usefulness to continue, to be interconnected in helping a flourishing reality continue on *You see? [Nature naturally doesn't let things go to waste. Even if it seems harsh, meaningless, what does any of this mean? It all means nothing..] I hope you see that's Not how the Natural world has to be, that's just a "perspective with-in your mind." In reality the deeper and deeper you look, you see that Nature would never create a system that EVERY single thing functions by: *Which is that sadly we all die. *But for me at least, even tho I'm still always going to be sad and cry and wish time with my parents/grandparents didn't fly by, and that one day it will be my time too.. I think, that I'm a lot happier now that I will at least have this perspective of *How the entire natural world has certain structures it lives by that keeps things going in this endless unknowingly vast ocean. I think I can lean into trusting Nature to metaphorically "catch you" just to at least say: "Everything will be okay because nature finds a way. You're not wasted in any way. How else do you think we've been able to keep the universe running until this day?" Then I would giggle *because I enjoy the little dark humor there. Then I think I'd find peace in imagining my matter converting into usefulness for fungi and plant matter. 🪨🌲🍂🪵🍄🌱🌹🥀🪲🧬🦠🌎
