Dennis DeYoung (formerly of Styx)

Музыка

On today's episode of The It's Only Rock And Roll Podcast, founding member and former frontman/keyboardist for Styx, DENNIS DEYOUNG sits down for a wide-ranging, no-holds barred interview talking everything from lazy rock journalism, to his new and final studio album, to the true reasons behind why Styx are no longer the multi-platinum-selling band a generation of loyal fans remember from the 1970's and early 80s.

He was a beautiful looking pirate man when young. Wow. Although he did not create Styx.

DD is either really down to Earth or one hell of a liar. I believe him, and wish that Styx could get back together for another tour.

41:30 What a great interviewer and true Styx fan to bring up the question this way. As a founding member who was kicked out of my own band that I deeply cared about, by our new guitarist who I took under my wing and decided he wanted to run the band, I really empathize with Dennis. It breaks my heart to hear what REALLY happened. And I believe him because look at Tommy Shaw and JY's behaviour since 1983, tons of disrespect and REVISING of history. They are STILL doing it - Just go look at footage from their current 50th Anniversary Tour with Tommy DELIBERATELY omitting Dennis from the story of how Styx got together. Motherfucker, you may have been in the classic lineup but you weren't even there when the band formed! Even though he wrote the lionshare of their biggest songs, he gives credit to everyone - Does that sound like a 'dictator' in a band? And to think that Dennis had stood up on Tommy's behalf when they wanted to fire him! I am amazed at how Dennis has kept a positive attitude, understands time waits for no one, and wants to get together ONE last time just to say "Thank You" to the fans he loves so much. He didn't even sue his bandmates, he just wanted to reconcile. Tragic how this has divided the loyal Styx fanbase ever since. Dennis DeYoung always was and will be a CLASS ACT. And he's right, nobody shit on him before that fucking VH1 hit-piece came out.

@@ItsOnlyRockAndRollPODCAST If it possible, I think you should interview Tommy and JY, lets see what they say. It seems harder to find interviews of them on KZread. And we have never heard Chuck Panozzo weigh in on this other than something like "I hope it happens someday [a reunion with DDY] before it is too late". It makes me wonder if Tommy and JY would have gotten away with ousting DDY if both Panozzo's had still been alive and active in the band's trajectory at the time. It seems asenine you can oust a founding member of the band like that. It would be like any one of Ozzy's newer guitarists saying, "Hey, we kicked out Ozzy from the band and now we're better than ever for it".

He hit the nail on the head about punk music. So over-hyped, yet practically nobody listened to it.

It really makes me sad how JY and Tommy are behaving. They forget they wouldn't be Styx without Dennis. They might be famous on their own but we're talking about Styx here cuz they're profiting from the songs. Even those they didn't write. Dennis was the main voice and talent/contributor. Yes, Tommy and JY and the guys (sorry the guys, names are on the tip of my tongue) are important. But they make out like Dennis isn't [important] and that's what makes them look bad. Dennis is among the best of the best. Let him bask in his success. It's well earned.

You are giving Tommy, JY and Lawrence “not an ounce of talent” Gowan way too much credit. They would all be flipping burgers now if Dennis had never given them those songs.

Oh come on. Lawrence Gowan is a classically trained musician. He has a degree from the Royal Conservatory. He has written for years. Tommy wrote songs and many, also for other bands he was in without Styx. He wrote songs for other performers, Aerosmith being one of them.
