With Ciceroni we seek to be a guide to European culture and history. We make videos on little known subjects as well as more ubiquitous ones, ranging from current affairs like the European Union, to historic events like the Tulip Mania, and even mythological stories like those of the Greek Gods. In all these videos we strive to present the subjects in a objective manner and within their complex context.

Thank you. The cultures & religions developed differently, herders & agriculture, seems so important! Resurrection is part of agricultural societies...

I do like your videos but would like to add something: Demeter's name may be traced etymologically to Dea Mater (Godess Mother). It is likely that she was honored by the indigenous farming peoples of the peninsula before the arrival of the patriarchal Indo-Europeans, ancestors of the Greeks.

Thank you for that addition. These video's are of course just the tip of the iceberg. :)

Your videos are up there with the very best of educational videos on KZread. I understand why you might have despaired over the lack of attention since the effort needed probably couldn't balance with your day job. (I imagine you being an historian) I hope you will resume making videos, even if it is at a very reduced rate and you then over time will get discovered, perhaps by other edu-channels, and get the attention you surely deserve.

So Persephone is returned to Demeter right now. We’re in March 28 2020, for anyone reading this in the future.

I actually heard somewhere that homer altered the original myth a long time ago to the story of Persephone being abducted, but, years before that the story, although lesser known, was actually that Persephone wandered into the underworld and decided she wanted to stay. Hades didn't mind, but, he told her not to eat the food. Low and behold, she ate six pomegranate seeds. Hades has since fallen for her, so he wasn't too upset. However Demeter was, demeter's part stayed the same, but, Persephone would have to return for half the year and stay with Hades. Now I've heard this from numerous people but, there are still very few, I'm not sure what to believe but, it would explain Hades' and Persephone's behavior toward eachother. Like, when Zeus manipulated Persephone into thinking he was Hades so he could... Well... Yeah. (Enter: Melinoe) or when the nymph named Menthe, had attempted to seduce hades, and Persephone turned her to a plant and stomped her to dust. But hey the myths aren't real so I guess the sky is the limit! XD

Interesting :) Like with most Greek myths, there are various versions of this one. Makes for many good stories and everyone can use the one he likes best :) Which one do you prefer?

I kinda like the one where she just wanders in. It makes me laugh to think that Persephone, a goddess who leaves flowers growing wherever she walks, to find herself in the underworld and be like, "man, it's gloomy here, it's also super dark and edgy... I like it. Yo! I'm moving in!!" And Hades is just like, "Okay.... I don't know what's going on. But.... That's cool," it's just funny to me.

MissMaddy licious For what it’s worth on the Melinoë bit, the original versions of her origin story said that she and Zagreus were both the children of Hades and Persephone. On top of that, since Hades was sometimes literally called “Deep/Lower/Infernal Zeus” or the “Zeus of the Underworld” (primarily because Hades was originally considered another aspect of Zeus before later versions made him a separate entity) it’s not too far-fetched that the versions naming Zeus as the father might actually have been referring to Hades.
