Today we prepare two recipes for kykeon, an ancient Greek ritual beverage connected with the Eleusinian Mysteries and Greek myths, following the descriptions that we find in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter and the Iliad.
Independently from the culinary point of view, these two recipes are extremely interesting for all the tradition and history they refer to, which cross all the history of ancient Greece from times that blend into the age of myth.
Ingredients:
Hymn to Demeter’s kykeon
whole-grain barley
pennyroyal
Iliad’s kykeon
whole-grain barley
wine
aged goat cheese

I always found it interesting that the mentions of kykeon remind me of what we call in the southern USA, grits. Depending on how you cook it can be rather soupy. And kykeon sounds like it was used as a ritualistic "power drink" until people could sit down and have a proper meal.

I'd say the Kykeon was a highly revered and very powerful psychedelic potion-meant to facilitate and initiate communion with the 'holy other'.

In Italy, we still have this kind of recipe. In my region (Basilicata) but also in the provence of Foggia is really diffused what we call "vin cotto" wich is really similar to this except for the cheese. We eat it during the "Morti" holidays. Maybe it might be a plate derived from the Magna Grecia tradition or from the ancient cult of Persephone and Ade.

its true, the kykeon used in the ritual of the eleusian mysteries was psychoactive and induced a trip of some sorts, but we dont know what exactly happened, since these rituals and their experiences were kept secret. So how could the kykeon be psychedelic? The Barley is the key ingredient here. Ergot is a fungus that can grow on barley. LSD is extracted from the Ergot fungus. maybe the ancients used the infected barley in some way for the kykeon to gain psychedelic properties. That woudl explain how the ritual would enduce a trip. but that requires that the ancients knew of a way to extract a compound from Ergot that is at the very least similar to LSD as we know it

@@KO-lq1yo No. You would need ergot alkaloids for that. But no one has been able to find which alkaloid and or mixture/ratio was used. It was highly secret and I'm sure the Christians destroyed any evidence of the original ingredients. They couldn't have people having direct communication with god.. 😕
