Great video. When that first DEICIDE album came out it really hit the Metal scene in the mouth. Such a killer band.

Carnage in the temple of the damned is a criminally underrated song. Best song on their first. And those 2 choruses are each different but GODAAAAAAMN they’re so good. Plus the Jim Jones intro rules. Drink the wine! DRINK THE WINE!

Nobody and I mean NOBODY sang death metal with as much hate, anger, articulation, conviction, and aggression as the mighty GB.

First time I heard Deicide was when I picked up the At Death's Door compilation albums, when I heard Dead By Dawn I was drawn in by it's sheer ferocity, violence, and just fucked up hatred that song possessed. I picked up that first Deicide album immediately. And it just blew me away. I didn't think any type of Heavy Metal could be that scary, frightening, a so full of hatred. I fell in love with that album. And it remains top 4 with the likes of Altars of Madness, Entombs Left Hand Path and Obituary's Cause Of Death. All 4 I still listen to this day. I'd like to hear more on Obituary.

Deicide are an ever so close runner up to the Mount Rushmore of Death Metal. Morbid Angel, Entombed, Obituary and Death being the four founding fathers. I loved the first two records but I have to say those 4 bands cast a much longer shadow of influence on the scene, much more integral to its development over the 90s and beyond. But when I was a kid Deicide were the go to for headbanging and for producing shirts that pissed off teachers. "End of god the way it must be." Edgy stuff back then.

It’s not underrated among people that love Deicide. The album cover rules, GB’s best lyrics of all their albums. My only minor critique is the dry as bone guitar sound.

Thanks for the video - it’s an eye opener for - always passed by Deicide for some reason, like you said they seemed a bit passé when I was getting into metal…. just stuck on first three records over the past couple of days and wow… how did I miss how vicious they sounded?

I love "Serpents". I get why people don't like it, but it ha some absolute brutal bangers (like "Slave To The Cross", "Bastards of Christ", the title song). It's the last Deicide album that I actually like. After the "Bible Basher" song there's not one song of theirs that I can remember, or really care about. I guess "Overtures of Blasphemy" was fine, but if you want me to play something Deicide - I won't go further than "Serpents".

Amon: Feasting the Beast was my first death metal albums back in 93/94. I was into Slayer and this sounded to me like a more extreme Slayer so I persisted even though at that time the death metal vocal style was a bit of a leap to make. It is the one i would go back to now. Once Upon the Cross is a ripper as well and holds certain nostalgic emotions for me. I remember going in to Sound Cellar when it came out and there was someone chatting to Rodge (or was it Sid?) and flicking through the artwork. Myself and my friend were looking at the artwork thinking, oh fuck! Pure evil. I have good nostalgic memories associated with Serpents of the Light too as I bought it and The Pagan Prosperity by OMC together on a school trip to Europe in 97. A decent album it is too despite the weird production. I fired on Insyneratehymn in the past year or two and was surprised at how listenable it was. Bit of a Necros Christos vibe to it. Ultimately though,I gave it one spin and put it back on the shelf. Nothing else of their post- Serpents stuff made it into the collection but the bits and pieces i heard along the way weren't terribly inspiring. Still, their early period is ferocious and evil death metal par excellence.

I like the production of Serpents actually. The thin guitar tone gives it a slight black metal feel I think. I think they haven't bettered Stench since then though. I like the kinda Megadeth style solos.

Hails Alan. Just found your channel. Thank you for the great music w Primordial. It was a pleasure to see you share your opinions on Deicide. You and I are the same age and though I am from P.A. our experiences are similar seeing them live. We have similar opinions on the deicide releases . I have very recently grown to add Serpents to the list of the early greats though this is because the songs are that good though the flat production holds it back. I never listened to it in 97 though. Anyway, thank you again for the content. Cheers

Once Upon the Cross was the album that got me into death metal. What a dark and brutal piece of metal it is. The tones are just perfect, the songs amazing and Glen's vocals just dripping with hate and fury. Probably Scott Burns' best production. The first three albums are all 10/10 for me with Serpents just below. They've released some really good stuff since too. Live they're always amazing. The recent Legion tour was brilliant, you can see how hard those songs are hard to play. Legion is such an odd album in their discography as they never released anything like it. Just so technical compared to their other albums. Apparently Steve Asheim has always written most of their material from the beginning.

Happy to see these back - on those later ones, big fan of To Hell With God and Overtures of Blasphemy particularly - obviously not hitting the energy of the classic years but there's a bunch of really great songs, and a whole lot better than the late 90s/early 00s albums obviously. Very worthy. Renewing the call for the collected works of Tom G Warrior episode next.

I don't know how familiar Alan is with Neurosis' material but yeah, Neurosis would definitely be interesting to go through since apart from the few last albums (that aren't all that good, in my opinion), all of their albums feel drastically different to me and you can definitely tell how they matured as humans along as time went by and it's all reflected heavily into their music as well.

Yes I was at Dynamo 1998 and remember hearing about Deicide not being able to make it... I dont remember the Tura Satana bit, other than reading the name on the festival poster. I remember different stages for different subgenres, e.g. death stage, black stage etc, perhaps was it is just that only bands from that genre would play on that day... I remember seeing Emperor, Immortal, Covenant.... and Death on the main stage and they were fkn boring!!! Somehow that live footage is legendary now.

@@AlanAverillNemtheanga I saw Rammstein for the first time at Waldrock Festival 1997. I believe they played there for 7.000 guilders! And indeed, I remember Phil Anselmo was so wasted (did you see Emperor? Awesome man, awesome!) and the gig was not very good. I do not remember Iced Earth at all. Dynamo 98 was my first European festival, absolutely loved it although 99 was a lot better, probably the best line up I've ever seen. I was gutted Deicide didn't play but don't remember the Tura Satana incident. We found out Bolt Thrower pulled out of Dynamo 99 when we were going over on the ferry, gutted again! Emperor, Enslaved and Immortal all played on the same day in the tent, amazing! And that was the festival I got into Death, only time I saw them. The thing I remember most was about 10,000 people in Dissection shirts, just crazy! Can't believe it was 26 years ago!

I have very similar feelings about their discography, though I would probably be more harsh od their weak albums. The first three is where it's at, plus of course the second demo, "Sacrificial". I would love the first demo if not for the vocals, which sound... well, weird. "In the Minds of Evil" was surprisingly good - would be a great album if it had a different production (the drums kinda ruin ot for me). The new song I'm not impressed with at all.
