The Landrover has long been an Off-Road ICON around the World - Tackling deserts, Jungles, Tundra and everything in between. The Bronco (albeit an Iconic name) is relatively new to the game and being better than the landrover would certainly give it an edge in solidifying its position in the market.
This was a great chance to show the best on road and offroad skills that both vehicles have! Mud, Water, rocks and dry pavement - We found it and four wheeled it all! Family cruising or serious outdoor enthusiast? Take note of this one!

But yeah... The Defender essentially has street tires whereas the Bronco had a proper mud terrain beefy tire. It was basically no competition, which is what I expected. This comparison basically proves how important a proper tire is on your rig when you want to go wheeling. If you're on a street tire, you cannot expect your rig to perform well... Even if you have the most capable optioned Defender, or Bronco, or Wrangler, etc... Without a proper tire, you will be in trouble. 😆😭👍🏼

In my view Land Rover has hit a sweet spot with the new Defender. I think it’s a mistake to say they failed because it’s not like the old Defender or better off road than a Rubicon or a Bronco. The market has spoken, Land Rover has found a market niche with little or no competition and they’re exploiting it well. The proof is a top spec Defender costs more than the new Range Rover SE, and they can’t build them fast enough. In reality that extra 1%….5% of off road prowess you might get with a less civilized alternative isn’t worth it to the Buyers of the new Defender. If I want a kick-ass off roader I’ll buy an old Jeep that someone else has already modified and use it on the reality extreme stuff, the other 99% of the time I’ll much more happily drive the new Defender.

You'd think Land Rover would equip a 100k off-roading vehicle with a far more aggressive tires. All of that well designed tech is nothing without the basics covered as well. Sure, the Sasquatch package is a factory option. It's hardly a fair comparison still. The Wild Track costs 60% more than the base version for the extra features and upgraded tires. Why it doesn’t shut off in low range I have no idea. But you need to manually switch it off, regardless of the Terrain Mode you are using. The only exception is the Sand Mode which allows far more wheel slip. But will have a different throttle map. That said, your test really seemed to show the difference in the tyre tread, not the size.

Great video. I think it confirms what my initial thoughts of both vehicles are in that the Bronco out of the box is extremely impressive and likely has a higher ceiling for extreme off road. The Defender being a global vehicle is limited on tire sizes in order to appeal to a larger market where 35's arent the norm and aren't readily available. I think with a better tire, maybe a 33" it will help immensely, and the Land Rover traction control will kick in to allow it to do some amazing things, but the tires aren't capable of keeping up with it when you're at slow speeds in these kinds of conditions. I would kive to see someone put a set of good tires on the Defender and then really compare them to the Bronco and Jeep to see how it performs.

@@Adam_Rosenberg91 4-low is rarely a good idea through deep mud because low speed through deep mud is a good way to get stuck. It is the exact opposite of rock crawling. Sand/mud modes allow for unlimited wheel spin and require higher RPMs, often higher than 4-low will allow. The advantage of 4-low is to allow feathering of the throttle in tricky areas and to engage lockers, but the additional torque is not needed when there is low traction. I would never advise faster speeds through deep water, but it is more advantageous in mud in the absence of deep water.

In my opinion, even though the Defender is a pretty capable SUV/crossover Land Rover really missed the mark. They basically spat in the face of one of the most iconic vehicles ever made. They went from a company who makes a utilitarian world-class off-roader and a world-class luxury capable off-roader to a company that makes like five midsize luxury crossover/SUVs that are decent off-road... when they're not broke down. With their background in reliability, no thanks. Just more systems to fail and leave you stranded. And we all know that the air suspension sucks. People are already changing it out or trying because it fails, among other things, and jacked up to it high point it rides like a deuce and a half. I'm just super bummed. I was really hoping they'd do the nameplate justice and there'd be a third, cool, modular 4x4 to take out and run with the Jeeps and Broncos. I mean it even looks like a first gen Freelander that was blown up like a puffer fish. Really disappointing. Leave it for the Beverly Hills crowd, but then again they'll just probably get a Range Rover or Jeep or Bronco... Maybe used ones will be the new Jettas and Beetles and hairdressers will buy them when they're old enough.
