great playthrough! watching makes me want to pull this out and play it again.

I like the infirmary options. The special infirmary gives you something to do with badly rolled dice but it sometimes makes the game a little too easy since you don't have to struggle as badly to get exactly what you need. The expansion really improved things with the upgrades since dice rarely feel wasted now. I'm really looking forward to the Kickstarter that launched today because a co-op version of this game is something I really wanted.

Me too! Very intrigued to see how Armada works out. My only concern at the moment is how well the co-op will actually work, but otherwise it looks great.

Looks about right to me. Start off with "Oh well, all is well and easy cruising." which quickly turns into "Why am I almost dead?". Great playthrough.

I love that at 7:09 he rolls 3 blue, 1 gray, 1 purple, and 1 orange. Then exactly a minute later 8:09 rolls the exact same thing!

That turned quickly! Blowing up the meteroid (whoops, meteor) during one of the lull turns might have helped prevent the huge damage spike there at the end. Surprisingly tough decisions for such a simple, light game.

Thanks for the great Playthrough! My Partner bought me this Game as one of several Solo Games purchased for my Birthday a couple of weeks ago - it's a really 'addictive' little Game this - can't stop playing! (but then I LOVE dice rolling) At the moment I've only been playing using Ship 'Athena MkII'. Watching you play the 'Halcyon' makes me think though I perhaps should have started with that one as an easier starting experience.

This looks like a digital game I got off of Steam called “Tharsis”. You are trying to survive a trip to Mars on a damaged ship. The ship has different modules that you assign crew members to as damage events occur. It’s actually a digital board game as you are rolling dice to mitigate damage. Brutally hard game though.

It looks interesting and for me it evokes Star Trek Voyager (because I never watched Deep Space Nine) and it's great fun to imagine the Doctor sawing off some limbs or throwing someone into the vents or whatnot whenever the occasion arrives. Not even for pressing needs, just because it's easiest. (And yes, occasionally healing them too, that's nice I guess .)

That was really well explained. I've had this for ages, thought I'd look for a play through vid before having a blast myself, and this vid has helped a lot! I got it because it reminded me of FTL, and I got the expansion as well when I purchased from their own website. I heard recently they are doing a 2nd edition (only has a small change to the rules for clarity), think it may contain the expansion? They and won't be doing one again after that, so this game is a rare item! Great vid, keep up the good work, Fella! (subscribed)

I think playing with the expansion content especially upgrade cards is much better than the base game. The upgrades allows you to use most of your dice all of the time.

Well, you got me to buy this game! I'm trying to cut back on purchases, and largely succeeding since I don't have any more shelf space, but a small-box, inexpensive game like this I can handle.

The design of the ships and their outlines reminds me of the style used in the video game Faster Than Light. This looks neat, but it seems like it's not got a ton of player agency. You roll and assign, sure, but each thing you roll can really only do one thing and you have limited options for changing dice, either Command or your Infirmary. I mean I guess Medical dice but it seems like most of the time that's a no-brainer "move scanner die to returning" rather than real choice. And since the goal is to get through the encounter deck and reach the boss, that means that each turn you're just wanting to deal with threats as fast as possible so it seems like, again, no-brainers to turn dice into lasers with command to remove enemy ships when at all possible. Sure you can choose to do something else, but why would you choose to, for example, use a command die to turn an engineering die to a science die to regain shields instead of a laser die to destroy an enemy, in a situation where 1 more laser die would finish them off? Yes, okay, if there's multiple threats you might benefit from fully restoring shields, but what I mean is, it seems like in many situations while you technically have a choice, there's a pretty clear "right" choice. And all this isn't even touching the issue of "I have nothing to fight and rolled only laser dice" that can crop up. It certainly seems like a fun light game, but from seeing this (which I recognize is hardly enough to definitively judge it) it seems like it's kinda surface level and lacking in more complex player choice and interaction.

Fully agree on the FTL comparison. I mention it in the video. Love that game. I won’t disagree with what you said about agency. I will note that the other ships force you to make tougher choices, but the Halcyon is pretty simple to play.

Interesting game, however I think a game like one deck dungeon is generally more interesting as it has a sense of progression and has far more decision space.

Nice game. Only downsides for me are - 1, after rolling the dice the resolution seems pretty obvious most times. 2, it would be nice if you could upgrade your ship, or something, when you have leftover dice.

Agree with 1, though some ships give more to think about. As for upgrades, the expansion has an element of that. Use extra dice each turn to build 1 of 6 upgrade cards.

Just made the dice and played the game. I played easy mode and I barely squeaked a win. I was swarmed many times.
