    For me decluttering is about feeling light. Now, being in my 50s, I know I don't need much. My passion is to travel, to discover new places and explore. This is what nourishes my soul. Decluttering also inspires me to travel light.

    When I started my decluttering journey I knew I would have to do at least three rounds in my home. First I packed up boxes of stuff in each room and stacked them in a corner of that room. This was a small but quick win as I got my floors cleared. While filling the boxes, I got rid of the trash and things I knew for sure that I did not want to keep and donated what I could. Second, I started going through closets and dresser, again sorting trash, keep, donate. Second, I went through each box (1-2 every weeknight, 3-5 on the weekend). When it came to photos or paperwork, they were put into another box for future review. The third step was to go through my house one more time making some tougher decisions (How many hammers…can openers…pillows, does one girl need?? 🤷‍♀️). I also took the time to go through the paperwork and shredded most of it. I was also able to set up my in-box and file system. I only have some photos left to sort through. I also moved in the midst of all of it so more packing & unpacking was needed. It took some time but I got through everything and I know what I have and where everything is.

    I read The Life-changing Magic of Tidying up about 10 years ago, and I've been striving to be more minimal ever since. I like what you said about honoring where you are. There are times and seasons that we have more time, or more energy, and it's much easier during those times, but then there are times when life comes at us full force and we only have the strength to exist. I think the point is to overall keep moving in that direction over time. Thanks for your grace-filled videos ❤️

    Thanks Connie for uploading. I have given a lot my furniture away to charity, only keeping the minimum I need. This in itself has made cleaning my house so much easier. It's amazing how little we actually need to live comfortably, this I know for sure after getting rid of so much stuff. Have a good week.

    Yes, I agree with you. Clutter holds me back and makes me anxious. I have more confidence about the future as I get rid of stuff I no longer need. You can’t bring stuff in unless you take stuff out. It makes room for what is valuable to me

    Lola...I am 72 years young and I feel the same way you do. I too have always been the one to clean up and always with very little to no help and have felt the feelings of overwhelm and frustration even to the point of tears. Clutter drives me crazy too and after now 4 years of decluttering I have realized how nervous clutter makes me feel. While I enjoy the younger folks doing this and have learned much from them, I also like to connect with older ppl my age.~ Jodi

    Hi Connie. My name is Jodi and I am 72 years young?...the young part is a lol moment. I started decluttering 4...going on 5 years ago now and with in that time only one year did I not do much. Now I have decluttered enough that I am getting right down to minimalism and love it. Clutter makes me nervous, a feeling I had never realized before until I started decluttering and living with less. Its so calming and soo much easier to clean. I also want to get down to as few possessions as possible so one day when I'm gone it will be easy for my daughter. My mother did this for me and it was the best gift she had ever given me. Today I have a project that seems so overwhelming and then I ran across this video. I love the part where you say to honor where you are and also for today I think the best tip you have given here for me today is to do my decluttering of this space of overwhelm just a little at a time. Ty for this video, its very nice to hear your calming voice and enjoy your wisdom.

    When several years ago I decided on less and be more minimal; I knew that the method of taking everything out all over the house (Konmari) would not work for me; too overwhelming. I did the one drawer at a time; one closet in one room then move on to the next; while keeping order in the rest of the house. I am 72 now and was raised in a very minimal neat home. My husband was not and still likes a lot more items about than I do. The compromise was he has his own space/room to keep it as he likes. As always thanks for sharing wonderful advice and tips.

    Connie you truly inspire me. As said before I'm new to minimalism and enjoying the new lifestyle (7months). I buy less and spend less. I reevaluate before purchases. Decluttering is so freeing. Most things I've donated and some things I've sold. I love the way my new home looks. I love what you said about using each room for 3purposes only. Even though I have already decluttered my clothes by 70%, I am still looking forward to my next declutter after winter(we are in winter season currently). I love doing the capsule wardrobe. My new routine is so peaceful. My husband is loving it as well. We both turned 50 this year. Life is feeling pretty great. I discovered Minimalism when we sold our house we lived in for 24years and searched how to pack up. I came across the minimalism concept and packed only what we wanted. Donated and sold the rest. Even with unpacking in our new home we decluttered more stuff. Now we have a spacious new home for 7months. Light and enjoyable. I also do a month to month assessment to declutter. The aim is to declutter by season. I love that I can do minimalism to suit us. Thank you Connie💗💗💗 from Melissa in South Africa

    I like what you said about change with hobbies and possessions. I tend to feel guilty or even ashamed when I gather too much stuff for new crafts that I am trying. But, at least at first, I get so much joy from the new fabrics and supplies. Then I winnow it back down to the right size for me. Speaking of change, how was your move from NC to Idaho? We moved a long time ago to be near and help out parents, too. It was a big change in mindset, but it worked for us.

  • @ConnieRiet

    @ConnieRiet

    Жыл бұрын

    It's very common to want to keep more things than we have space for. I get asked this question often. When we love our stuff it makes decluttering difficult. Try to look at each item and rate it on a scale from 1-5 (1 being least and 5 being the most) of how much the item means to you. Only keep the top items with a score of 4 & 5. Remind yourself that you are in control of your possessions and not the other way around. You've got this!
