No more purses ! I have bought two in past month just over $800 and added them to the collection I’ve bought this year still with tags on them sitting in a pile along with plastic big totes full of purses new with or without tags bought the last several years . That I’ve never used ! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️so much money wasted !

One solution I’ve found for “ retail therapy” is to have a clothes swap with friends and neighbors! Once a year, we bring our unwanted clothes, pocketbooks, shoes and jewelry to someone’s home . We then separate the items into separate rooms by size and category, then “shop”! I’ve come home with items that are in great shape, things that others once loved but have outgrown or are tired of, and I’ve gotten rid of items that I no longer use, all for free :)

A few years ago I made a year long commitment to not buy anything unless I needed to replace an item that had I had used up. For example, I bought new running shoes mid year when they wore out. I have continued this practice and found so much freedom and time. It was the best new year goal I've ever made for myself. You've reminded me there are other areas of my life to examine as well (subscriptions).

I'm with you!!! I will occasionally buy 2 pair of shoes that I really like...I'll put one pair in storage and wear one. I'll either rotate, or save the second pair until I'm done with the first. I'll often save the second for dressing up a bit...depending on the shoe. I'm really picky about my shoes, so when I find a style I like, I'll keep buying them until I don't see them anymore. I love my rubber crocks, but they disappeared for awhile. Now they are back so I bought a few more. I don't dress up very often...lol.

Due to hypersensitivity and other sensory issues, I have spent over 2 years (and a LOT of money curating a wardrobe that works for me year-round. I’ve finally accomplished this, so now my goal is to only buy something that I actually NEED going forward.

Clothing, makeup, home decor. The only exceptions are necessity items in clothing (new bras, underwear if needed); and needed makeup like mascara every 3 months for cleanliness reasons. And sunscreen or moisturizer (drugstore is fine, Dr. Dray taught me this)!

I loved this. Making a shift and being a good steward is so important for peace of mind and body and soul. I watch other channels recommend a new skin care tool or item every day and I think many women especially have such a fear of aging that they buy and buy hoping to chase youth. Another thing I would suggest is stop buying all of the make up and products and love who you are. They are also really not healthy for our bodies. Love the process of aging and forming expressions. I have so many clients that stopped Botox for example and saved thousands. I love books as well and now I give them away and I am having my husband build me a little library at my gate to our home so I can share all of my books. Blessings to you and everyone here 🍑🙌🏻🧡Lisa

I have no spare money because I help my mother financially and a friend also. So that is where all my spare money go. I don't buy seasonal home decorations anymore. I don't even have enough money to buy for my essentials. I have limited closet space so I already have thrown away a lot of clothes and valuable books which I regret throwing away but I have gained little bit of breathable space which is important. I was influenced by minimalism but I am not really a minimalist by heart.

Judy VanderPloeg-- I finally have my closet under control with my all season capsule wardrobe. My goal is to not buy any clothing items, unless it's a one in one out situation. I'm trying to purge my books ( I am not very successful at this, as I love my books). My goal for this area, is no new purchase and let go of books I don't think I will read again. I also have way more lip balms than I can use up in this life time. I'm going to keep the ones I have opened and use them up. The unopened ones I am offering to my daughter and to friends.

Hi Connie, love your videos and listening to your softly spoken voice. My biggest weakness is also thrift fashion shopping and I can easily spend $80-$200 at any one time. I really need to curb my clothing addiction. So I too am forcing myself not to shop for any more clothing. ☺️ I will aim for a no buy month to Christmas time, exception is only for two Birthdays of son and daughter. I am also going to get one of those wallet envelop systems to help save more. I’m terrible at saving. Wish me luck! Please keep producing more wonderful videos.🤗

I traveled over the Easter Holiday week and realized that I went way over budget in the process. Now it's hard getting back into the minimalist mindset once I returned home. I'm going to need to do a no spend May month to even things out. My best bet is to severely limit my trips out to stores and focus on using what I have on hand.

I love to collect things, be it felted animals, gnomes, Hindu or Buddha statues, books, or other things. I've noticed an uptick in my buying things online since the pandemic but have recently decided that I really don't need anymore things, especially since I've limited space to display them. Unless it's something I really want I don't buy it, as I know from experience that the initial enjoyment and novelty of my purchase will pass. Your idea of a Low Buy Year Plan is quite helpful (although I've been admiring your turquoise jewelry and wanting to buy it through Etsy!). Peace & Namaste, Jenny

I just want to add my two cents into the pot of intentional living... The Word Intentional doesn't automatically mean slow, simple, or strict...relaxed or empty. It's not strictly about minimalism or wandering the woods looking for herbs and flowers. Intentional, for me, is simply having meaning and purpose for everything I do. I am a complex being with a mind that needs stimulation, not relaxation all the time. I need the balance of intensity and simplicity...even as simplicity can be intense. I'm a journalist and author whose mind works almost 24/7...I do work at balancing that with moments of sabbatical. My point is this...we can't simply equate Intentional Living with sitting around an empty house with nothing to play with, nothing to think about, nothing to dream...empty headed and simple minded. We can't thrive that way...it's not sustainable for the living/ active mind who is creative and needs much to work with. I have a house full of things I play with daily...curtains, bedding, baskets, boxes, food, art supplies, journals for my work as a professional aesthetic artist...it's a full storehouse for a MINDFULL/INTENTIONAL life rich and abundant in things I tend to daily. I'm not "Intentionally" lazy and relaxed...it's not good for me.

    B. D. Walters I found your two cents to be very beneficial in relation to myself. I am an inspiring fiber artist, and if there is art/craft supplies in really need, I will purchase it. My art is my therapy, as I have an anxious mind. I do however thrift most of my supplies, and have really started a low buy plan for 2022. I think we all need balance in our life, but don’t know how to go about making it work. And yes, to sit around in an empty house with nothing to do, would not be for me. Cheers

@@shirley1413 I appreciate your use of the words "anxious mind"...My anxiety is multiplied exponentially when I find myself in a place of boredom. That's when I eat, drink, smoke, etc. I have filled my house with thrifted things as well, and now I can shift from writing, to collage, to home care, to decor, to journaling, to creating journals, to organizing my linens, to weeding out my supplies...it's a grand and glorious way for me to thrive. Much of my COVID money was used to replenish my home supplies and pantry...so my anxiety is greatly diminished. I am also "fasting" for 2022, but I won't allow my stores to be depleted either. It's a good balance for me to work the whole house, all the time. It's nice to know I have at least one like minded soul out there in the world...I am comforted. Enjoy Living!! It's Vital for Life...LOL

    @@shirley1413 A Contemplation for a Possible Word Construction & Composition: I think being Intentional is Inspirational and Motivational... When I set my intent..my inspiration is activated and motivation to completion is increased. Consideration leads to Intention...mixed with Desire and Passion...I'm inspired to start a project with intention as the seed of vision and purpose, the mission and motive that become motivation to completion through perseverance, practice and patience through the process to perfection in my perception. Does it make sense? Do You Agree? Just asking for fun's sake. I love the reasoning process and using words to create meaning and a message for myself. LOLOLOL It's a way I play. :-}

@@melaniegodwin8791 All I'm saying is that I don't buy into the "minimalist" ideology. The meditations are designed to "empty" the mind...and from what I've read and heard...they aren't real interested in deep concentration and contemplation...hence they are "simple" minded. That's not a criticism of them...just an observation and a "judgement" for myself and my way of living. I've "judged" it not right for me. Perhaps my way of conveying that was not suitable to your definition of how things "ought" to be said...but we each have our own unique ways of speaking...I used to get crazy when people didn't communicate a certain way that was "correct" in my eyes...but I've stopped "judging " them, and started simply focusing on me. If you're offended, I'm sorry.

This year the 2'things I'm doing are a 'no clothes shop' as I have all I need, I have done this once before, l will only replace something if it wears out or breaks, I wear every item I have and am more mindful of my spending in this area. Also I am strictly reminding myself that ' the house needs nothing more' we see something and think we need /want it, but we really don't, wait for a week and see if you still need it or have totally forgotten about it!

I love sweaters! I bought three new pullover sweaters before Christmas but I also gave away some of my other sweaters. I retired last year and have comfy clothes but they are old, I added a few new lounge items. Books and cookbooks are another weakness, I don’t buy cookbooks anymore because my husband now does most of the cooking. It’s hard to part with them. I need to purge beauty items this week. I would love to know what you use for your beauty routine and makeup.

One of the biggest expanse this year was in the area of clothing. I started off 2021 weighing 193 and by Aug I was down to 153. I enjoy wearing different styles of clothing. Enough area where I can see the cutting costs is preparing meals. I only eat two meals a day and there are times I only want one meal. Often it is difficult to plan meals when you cook for one. Just a couple of areas where I know I can cut back.

I have never had any subscription and I only drink water and occasionally almond milk. I love the smell of coffee but I don't need to have one. I never have my nails done and don't feel deprived at all. I used to take my daughter to a local library or a local animal shelter, a few of our favorite hangouts. My daughter and I don't watch TV although occasionally we borrow movies from our local library. We don't have cable subscription. I haven't taken her to a movie theater and I haven't been to one for over twenty five years. Yes, we have attended shows such as Shakespeare, or a cheap local symphony. If you want to know real, real minimalism, go visit a recent American immigrant family. They put any American born to shame. They are humble, modest, and quiet.

Thank you, Connie, for sharing your list! I will have to think about what items will be on my Low Buy list. I do know that I over indulge in Amazon shopping! 😩 Our family may need toiletries or a pair of shoes, but I was getting the instant gratification of buying it on Amazon and it arriving the next day without wandering the stores. My next goal is to put it in the cart but wait a week - do I still "need" this item? Will I be out at a store and find it cheaper? Helps me to calm down the filling of cabinets and then not really paying attention to the item! 👍😄

I think I’ve just about got what I need (my wardrobe is quite small) so apart from some Winter garments I’ll be needing come Winter (bamboo leggings, bamboo or wool turtlenecks and wool cardis-I’m in a forest in Australia) I won’t be buying anymore clothes for 2022. 😉

I notice so many stores today not just the department stores are not offering as much cotton or wool sweaters, etc. For example Talbots which is a great store for basic sweaters, etc. is including more polyesters, nylons, lycra in their clothing. I personally don’t like this trend. I don’t mind a small percentage of a synthetic. But I see a overall cheapening on clothing and fabric content. Any thaoughts

@@bonnieshapiro3511 Two years ago I decided I was no longer going to buy clothing made in sweat shops so I started buying my clothing exclusively from Etsy. Another benefit of this is that I'm able to buy natural fabrics. The only clothing I've bought has been organic linen items from Etsy shops like Not Perfect Linen, Linen Cloud, Lenok Linen, etc. The items are made to order in the colors I choose and they will customize them for me at no additional charge. This year I will probably purchase a sweater which I will also buy on Etsy from sellers that use entirely natural materials.

I no longer buy cosmetic products for no reason. I only purchase to replace a used item. I also keep my collection simple. I also keep my skin care to one specific line so I can always find what I need to replace and keep track of my spending. I can also try before I buy with free samples since I order through a consultant which saves me time in going to drug stores/makeup counters, and money in buying products that I don’t like. I trim my own hair since I am growing it out and I do this every six weeks. I also am not buying excessive sweaters. I own 3 and only need to add 2 this FALL/WINTER. I have completed my minimalist wardrobe for this SPRING/SUMMER and I have a short list for FALL/WINTER with 4-5 items. These items will be to replace items I either donated or tossed from last year. I will be only purchasing the best quality I can afford for these 5 items as I want them to last. 💕 I am also considering pairing down to 2 handbags in the future. All of these changes have given me so much satisfaction

When the pandemic hit, I made a decision to declutter room by room in it's entirety. Well I discovered I had accumulated enough stuff and things for 2 more lifetimes. My quest was to eliminate half of whatever I had. I found 32 coffee/mugs, I packed half and donated the other. My new approach to stuff and things...if I purchase one item I will get rid of 12 items of it's likeness. Buying one kitchen item, get rid of 12 things in the kitchen, it works well for me. Now I'm very selective of what to buy and what to get rid of.

I had to get myself sorted and stop buying things that I already have too much of. I started my "no unnecessary purchases" journey back in 2018 and it's been freeing. I only purchase what I absolutely need; and given The COVID-19 Pandemic, I now have 2 solid years of curbing my love for outside eating. Since many businesses were closed, I quickly adapted. We have a long way to go I hear. I too like to read and so have books. But then the idea kicks in; you are creating clutter. When will I read it ?? When can I read it ?? A colleague mentioned, a tidy house is a tidy mind. What he meant is just; remove the chaos, the "must do things" and it will create calm in your head. The idea behind decluttering. Next is waist not, want not. And so the question "do I need it ??, Will I use it ??". We are a creature of habit and so you don't change unless you have to. My moment came when I lost my job and so my income. And so was forced to downsize considerably. Now I got a good paying job, but still maintaining my lifestyle which I adopted when unemployed. Just because I love it. I don't care anymore to have things and buy things. Someone said that its like filling a void in your life, or that it's a kind of addiction. I guess it is.

We often celebrate “no spend day”, when we don’t spend any $ at all. We stopped eating in restaurants, which is a treat reserved for special occasions where we meet with family members or friends. Mostly we buy groceries or recipes that we cook at home. I contribute home-cooked dishes for family gatherings. We only drink 🍷 alcohol at home, or bring wine to family gatherings. I don’t shop in malls unless looking for something specific that I need. If the item I seek is too pricey I look online or I can sometimes figure out how to make it instead, or find somewhere to buy it second-hand. A little creativity or online research can go a long way to save $ and bring satisfaction.

I am unemployed and we used to be able to afford pretty much whatever we wanted. I bought so much frivolous crap and had a giant cardigan, clothes and shoe hoard. Yet I was always bored with my wardrobe and had to buy more. Now that our income is nearly half what it used to be, I can't buy anything for fear of not paying our bills! Had I banked a portion of the money we used to have, it wouldn't be so scary now. Unfortunately I got very sick this summer, lost 24 pounds and had nothing that fit me anymore, so I had to buy a few things that did fit. But I realized that dressing was way easier with only 3 pairs of pants and two leggings, plus a few tee shirts. I got rid of a lot of clothes and saved the rest in the attic in case I gain the weight back that I lost. Also used to spend lots of money on lipstick, with staying home and mask mandates, I no longer wear any lipstick, no point! The hardest part for me is that I am a knitter and can't afford to buy yarn! I am going to save my pennies to afford some every couple of months, but it is so hard to not have my needles and yarn in my hands! I am also trying to spend less money on food, but that is hard too. I want to name brands I like and I have to eat specialty foods if I want anything more than veggies, fruit and grains, as I am gluten free and plant based. Try buy any gluten free items for cheap! 😣 When we were young we used to eat so cheaply and we're able to feed our three kids, but all that cheap food wasn't healthy. It was all boxed and canned, nothing organic in sight. It is hard to go back to bulk grains and non organic.
