I've been decluttering having too much junk takes over your mind you have to worry about securing those items and paying for storage to protect those items. We are now moving in a direction of having less and finding ways to share what we have with others.

Hello Connie. I've been downsizing for about 10 months. I'm 65 yrs old. I live in a 1 bdrm house. It's been emotionally difficult, especially in the beginning. I'm happy to say it's a lot easier. I told myself "I've enjoyed these things, now someone else can" I decided to give away my stuff. My goal is for my sons to be able to clean out my house in one load, in case I move to nursing home or leave this world 🙌🏼 I enjoyed your video. Thank you bunches 🤗

I'm having to downsize from a 2 bedroom apartment to a 1 bedroom. I'm 60 and the cost of living has just gotten too high for me to stay in my beautiful 2 bedroom apt. I'm really having a hard time "letting go." Thank you for doing this video. Tomorrow I'm going to start with the bathroom because I'm not emotionally attached with the items in there. One box at a time. 💕

I discovered while decluttering that I did not even know how much of each thing I actually owned. I gave away two irons as I no longer iron my clothes only to open a different cupboard the next day and yes you guessed it there was another iron. I made myself give that iron away as well although I struggled with that, even though I don't iron. I cannot understand my own need to keep things 'just in case.''

I really enjoyed your video. I never even considered being a minimalist until recently. My family, my mother, and my adult children are all moving out of state together. It has been extremely difficult and expensive taking trips across country and back. Last month I had to drive five hours away just to rent a 24ft cargo trailer. They’re hard to find in California with so many people leaving. By the time I had returned the trailer it had cost $6,000 including fuel. I seriously question whether the contents were even worth half that much? I easily had another trailer full to go. I started sticking things out in front of my house and watched them disappear. I felt a relief when they were gone. These were things I no longer have to move. There are things that are irreplaceable and sentimental that I will keep but this has certainly changed the way I think and feel about all the stuff I thought I needed to hold onto.

Great advice love how calming your voice is too 😊 Theoretically if clutter attracts clutter and stuff atracts more stuff than why regret donating when ultimately it leads to less and less stuff and less money spent. Its a win, win to declutter. My experience is the less i own, the less i want to buy and the more mindful i become.

When deciding to eliminate an item, I tell myself it is going to a person who will use and appreciate it. It helps! Also, I view St. Vincent's Thrift shop as my closet: I send clothes there that I am not wearing. If I need that item again, I go to my "closet" and find it again. Of course, that rarely happens.

I really like your question ‘Does this add value?’ I’ve always been puzzled by the Marie Kondo ‘spark joy’ approach. I have many things I need and use on a daily basis that don’t exactly spark joy, such as my spatula or hair dryer. 😄 Questioning if it’s adding value is a much better question.

I have a Dyson hairdryer. (I know they are pricey, it was a reward to myself for sticking out a work contract I hated) It absolutely sparks joy and I love every time I use it. It also reminds me of the time I did a hard thing and saw it through to the end.

If people don't feel joy about "boring" stuff like a iron or hairdryer, I think it's bc. they lack a bit of appreciation and gratefulness for those useful things.. If you once had no hairdryer or iron or washing mashine or whatever Marie comes from another culture, where being thankful is a quite natural & given habit/attitude. That's why she "greets" and thanks the house and thanks and passes the decluttered stuff.. It's more "eastern" in general, I think. In many western cultures (US, Europe etc.) we lost the modesty & humility in simple things. Everything has to be bigger, better, the best, joy instead of just reasonable and fun instead of joy.. The dopaminergic system is leached out. We lack the joy for the little things..

thanks for this Connie. I'm having so much trouble decluttering, and this is helpful. This is partly because I still have a lot of my parent's things, after they passed some years ago, and I find it difficult to discard them or give them away. And also, with my own stuff, its the 'I might need it sometime' mentality that gets me. So, if I dont need it in my current life, I'm going to move it on. And I know my parents would hate me to clutter my life with their things that I don't use or need.

Thank you so much Connie. Just what I needed to hear. What REALLY helps me to pass some of my things along, that I actually still like, but honestly no longer use is to find the right place to donate them so they will be honored there. A local organization for woman and men (boys and girls) being trafficked in my area get my clothes, shoes and other items. I want them to have nice things not worn out hand me downs. I am so much more able to give things away when I know they will have a new purpose AND hopefully bring some joy to someone instead is just sitting around my house.

Connie, I just found your channel. I love your sweet kind voice and your method of thinking about decluttering. I am 72 and I really need to declutter.I have been on this journey since I retired but am at a stall and had hit the wall with taking care of my house and because I was helping my brother and sister. With the break in the weather I am hoping for renewed energy with going through my clothes again. I have lost 60 lbs with in the last two and a half years and have donated the clothes I can fit to our animal shelter store. I must go look for some smaller tops for summer. I can’t afford to buy new tops. I have jeans I bought at a thrift store and love them. Thank you for this inspiration. I am now subscribed to your channel.

just now finding your channel, and absolutely love it ! I shop at a local thrift store and find the greatest things at very affordable prices. I have a feeling of accomplishment and contentment that I found an item that I had been wanting, but did not want to pay full price, and now I have it for a minimal investment ( books are usually $1, shoes are $2, so you get the picture, stuff is really cheap). So when I want to clean out my closet, kitchen cubbards, or toy boxes, I remind myself that someone else will get this joyful feeling when they pick up the item that I am donating (all money stays within our county to help low income folks with health care) and someone else will really need and love and use this item in their home, for minimal investment. Win Win. Now, this process doesn't always work for me to declutter and donate, but I just reminded today that the things I am not using are something that another person can use, and will be so excited to find it and take it home, give it a good washing or cleaning, and get use of it. I appreciate the folks that have the courage to donate really nice things, so that I can buy them for minimal investment. Things I would otherwise not have. Hope this helps someone that is on the fence. If you ever wonder what happens to your donated items, just go into a local thrift store that benefits a non-profit in your town, and find an item that is dirt cheap and you wanted anyway. You'll get the good feeling that I'm talking about.

But I was so tough on myself, "I should donate more of these! Will I really have a nice dinner party in our new house? These fancy gadgets are expensive, how can you get rid of them?" Aloha, I just found your Channel. I am a minimalist and still over a period of time start noticing Mr. Clutter trying to sneak in. It is a constant battle - “Me vs. Stuff.” The only way I can win is to over and over and over keeping an eye out for things not being put back in their designated home and when I bring in a new item at least 1 or 2 items need to go. Life is so much more enjoyable when it’s easy to keep everything neat, clean and orderly. It also gives me more time to just relax and enjoy a lovely home. I also agree with many of the comments about your calm, clear voice and unrushed speaking. It’s so easy to understandwhat you are saying❣️

Wow, this is great video. I’ve watched a lot of organizing videos and one thing I heard you say here really is powerful, and something I don’t remember ever hearing before. “Would I buy it again?” I have the hardest time, no matter what I paid for something, getting rid of things I have shame about buying. I feel bad that I spent money on certain things. Asking myself this question, will really help me go back through the stuff I have and getting rid of these objects that make feel feel shame about spending money on. Thank you. Excess things have energy in them and I’m ready to be free from that. And I’m ready to really think before. Purchase anything new. 💗

I think letting go is usually the hardest thing to do.. even just in life in general.. but you have to let go of that mentality. I usually freak out n feel like am going to need something later.. but if I haven't used it in over a year then it serves no purpose, just takes up space, that's the hardest thing to accept but I don't think about the things I've gotten rid on in the past, I hardly remember what I even got rid of i just know it's stuff. I have seen a lot of people with nothing who are happy, I have learned that things are just things. I had to downsize from a 6 bedroom to a 2 bedroom, I was able to bless so much people and felt great about doing it

This weekend I went through my wall of totes that held baby and kids clothes. I got rid of at least 10 bags of clothes. while decluttering I found myself feeling so sad. I would pick up a piece of clothing and start crying. I wasn't sure why but I let myself feel it. I processed my emotions as they came. I saved one piece of clothing for each kid that I'm going to keep in my keepsake then that gives me the warm fuzzies when I hold them. I kept one bin of gender-neutral baby/toddler clothes for future babies and one bin for each child for hand me downs. It took me three pass throughs to accomplish this but I'm so proud of myself it's been a problem area for years

When I was decluttering, I made photos of all my stuff. Then I could make an album of why those things were special or important. Looking at some now, I don’t even remember the or remember the event. Lol.

I just found you Friday night and so thankful that I did..number one your voice is so calming and I look for that daily especially these past 31/2 months..my husband almost left this world four times since February..he is finally home and slowly doing better each and every day..he retired last July and I have been wanting to size down the past two years..I now know after my husband has been home from months spent in the hospital that his handicaps has certainly opened my eyes that not only do I want to downsize, I must…it’s been a challenge just getting through our home..I have always had the mindset that more was cozier NOT anymore..I’m at that stage of my life that it’s really getting on my nerves so thank you for opening my eyes to the idea I’ve had rolling around in my head for two years.. I know I am ready..this is a little off key to this comment BUT I absolutely LOVE LOVE your hair..do you have any videos how you style it? I’m tired of coloring my hair too..thanks again and I am binge watching your channel inbetween my husband naps and at night I am especially watching as many as I can.. Happy Wknd💐

@Happy Homemaker I am so sorry to read that your husband was in the hospital and had severe medical issues...thank goodness he is doing better. I have been decluttering since mid-January and it continues to be challenging because I, unfortunately, was raised in the home of a hoarder, my mother, who taught me the "save everything" mindset quite frankly. Therefore, I have been doing my best to reverse years of that detrimental thinking. Wishing you the best from NY😊

When it comes down to it, “most of what’s on offer in shops is just stuff” How much stuff or How many material items does a person really need? A key question for me while decluttering was, “If I let this go, will I need to purchase another one?” Another key question “Does this item bring value or joy to my life?” Great tips! I’m grateful for finding your channel.

I've been at it for several years and am almost finished. When it got too hard and/or emotional I would take a break, sometimes for months, and begin again. I bet I've gone through some boxes 3 or 4 times until I was able to release the items that only mean something to me and nobody else will want. Plug along at your own pace. It gets easier as you go.

I also love keeping a few useful items from past generations. In my case, it's mechanical clocks. They are a responsibility because they require weekly winding and a professional cleaning of the works every few years, but the sound of the chimes takes me back to my childhood.

I'm getting better at declutter things I have bought, but I still struggle with selling or giving away things that were gifts, especially very expensive things. I end up using the gifts moreso because they are expensive rather than me liking them. I suppose I have to have conversations with the people giving me gifts and be more specific on what they can give me that would bring value into my home. Still, the items I currently have are bringing me stress when it comes time to declutter or straighten up.
