Performance Notes
Bob Weir and Robert Hunter only wrote a handful of songs together for the Grateful Dead, as Hunter was primarily joined at the creative hip with Jerry Garcia and Weir’s primary source of lyrics was John Perry Barlow. But the Weir/Hunter joint output, modest as it was, yielded some stunning results, and none more so than “Jack Straw.” Weir was first inspired to tackle the subject matter of Depression-era outlaws on the lam by reading John Steinbeck’s classic novel “Of Mice And Men” and again by seeing the 1939 film adaptation of the same. Hunter’s extraordinary talent for narrative and Weir’s far-reaching musical sensibilities made for a perfect match in creating a captivating piece of storytelling - a cinematic epic somehow encapsulated in the confines of a song, delivered here with power and passion by Dead & Company.

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California.
Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.

Ironically, it was one of the only guys that John trusts in the business, who produced all John's major albums, that introduced him to the band, and now that same guy, Don Was, now plays with Bobby in the Wolf Bros. I guess the good folks in that business all find their way to each other in one way or another.

I’ve been a fan of JM’s guitar playing since his first album and when Mayer was announced as lead for Dead and Co, I thought to myself, yes, he is the perfect fit. Staunch deadheads wouldn’t see it at first , but they’ll get what the rest of his fans already knew: JM is a multi-dimensional high caliber musician. He said many times that he always wanted to be “IN” a band. Not just leading his own. Bobby was right to follow his instinct. And JM looks so happy playing these songs. Like a puppy. And of course Oteil and Jeff are such great choices too. God bless these guys.

I was spinning in a tapestry-cape near 3rd base, the back of the floor. This entire show was a Peak experience, without question; bsolutely beyond description! I danced harder than I’ve ever danced, I cried harder during Stella than maybe any show in my life, my spirit soared. It was such a convergence, of so many many emotions, so many beautiful brothers and sisters; absolute perfection. I was one of those who absolutely hated John Mayer. When he joined Dead & Co, a bunch of my friends wanted to go see them play. I refused because I considered Mayer to be some teenybopper chick’s music. I was certain that Jerry was rolling in his grave at the thought that Mayer had taken his place. Fast forward to a post Covid world (not so sure about that now), my cousin came out for the Halloween shows at the Hollywood Bowl ‘21. I reluctantly decided to go because I haven’t seen any live music in 2 years and wanted to get out. We saw 2 of the 3 shows. Within a couple of songs in the 1st night, my opinion on John Mayer instantly changed. I have never done a 180 degree turn on someone so fast. I had such a great experience on both nights that I decided to listen to some more of Mayers solo work and am blown away. I’m now convinced that John is not only a great musician and guitar player but also the smartest man on the planet for joining up with the Dead. What a great experience to go to those shows with my cousin and getting a new perspective on music, life and the Grateful Dead. I’ve also gained a new respect for Mayer and his incredible talent. I can’t wait to go to the next show!

Welcome to the show. Jack straw is definitely one of those powerhouses that can be magnetic to those aware and unaware alike, and is one of those unique experiences that leaves you both immensely satisfied but also needing more. The Dead is very special in the way that there will be songs that you aren't very interested in, but as time goes along you get drawn into them, one by one as you go through life and personal growth. I'm 32 also and there are songs that just a year ago I would skip, but today I can't get enough of. It's a quite unique experience, on top of the fact that to begin with no song is the exact same twice, giving a new experience every single damn time.

Love the energy that John, Jeff and Oteil bring to this band. They drive this as much as Bobby does when he feels like being assertive. Thankful to still be able to see Bobby, Bill and Mickey get down even in half time. I don't care if it's not the Grateful Dead, the train is still on the tracks and I'll enjoy it til the line shuts down.
