Performance Notes
A high-energy Dead & Company take on one of the enduring jewels of the Robert Hunter-Jerry Garcia songwriting partnership, first heard on the Grateful Dead’s 1970 classic “Workingman’s Dead.” Like the other songs on that album, “Cumberland Blues” may have seemed to come out of nowhere to listeners who were accustomed to the psychedelic anarchy of the band’s previous work, but in fact it was in some ways a return to the roots from which the Dead sprung. Bob Weir has told of driving around with Garcia in the early days of their long musical and personal association and picking up distant radio signals from the West Coast’s primary outpost for country music, Bakersfield, CA. And it’s the Bakersfield sound, as exemplified by such greats as Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, that lies at the heart of “Cumberland Blues” (Garcia often credited Roy Nichols, lead guitarist for Haggard’s band The Strangers, and Don Rich, who held the same role in Owens’ Buckaroos, among his favorite guitarists and biggest influences). Much of the music the Grateful Dead made in the early 70s drew on similar sources of inspiration, and the music they created can now be clearly seen as an important precursor to the hybrid of rock, country and folk that has come to be known, for want of a better label, as Americana.

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California.
Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.

Always a blessing to get a "Cumberland Blues"... good ol GratefulDead right there. So glad the fellas are still making music sharing that special vibe. Praying for a 2020 tour, but this song does make me miss Jerry! 🎶💜🎶

Dead and Co should play a few Johnny tunes, he's earned it. I would go with Gravity , New Light and Waiting on the wWorld to Change. Save Wonderland for an encore..lol

@@gregmeyer8900 if anyone had right to play one of their own numbers I think it would have been tre!!! He was used as a rented mule to sell out 3soldier field farewell shows for bob and only reason shows were full was tres people showed up in full force to see their man play with weir. Just a reminder of how powerful tre and phish have become. I'm a weir fan to the core but currently tre has a bigger army following him around coyntry

@@iomibestlefty That was epic & I loved the mingling of the 2 tribes. Beautiful magical time. Too bad it wasn't what it could have been musical wise. Trey seemed like the natural choice to step into the Jerry spot but it wasn't to be. Mayer has done a good job.

@@deadreckoning6288 I never thought tre was a natural transition to stand next to weir. Phish has perfectly executed the blueprint laid down by dead. Phish followed evry detail of the deads industry strategy as close as possible with exception to their core sound. To me they sound not even close to one another. And I'm not insulting phishs or tres sound it speaks for itself. But to me tres guitar sounds nothing like garcias did.

@@iomibestlefty I think they didn't give Trey enough time to rehearse. I agree that he's a top-notch guitar player, but it felt like he sometimes lost the plot just because he wasn't familiar enough with a lot of the songs. I'm not knocking him. I was at the Chicago shows and it was great. That would have been a hard job for anyone, no matter how talented they are. He did OK.

Can I make a music video with you? I have a bunch of innovations on the latest animation / technology trends I'd like to use so that it isn't only a video [for example while choreographing cell tower surges using the US as a canvas broadcast to space (any logo esque / pixelated image you want to send), I can record then matrix out visual feed back (visualization of radio static that is miicrowave radiation from the edge of the observable Universe) of the walls of the Adean Serpent Mound acoustics chamber to see if it leads us to other sites and things]. I also like the idea of the youtube video being a tool (an app fusion that is a blue print/board game that you place other minimized app windows on to sculpt starlight) people can use to travel the Universe in moments then return before sent with the Quantum Eraser Experiment focused on starlight sculpting.
