Performance Notes
Perhaps the closest the Grateful Dead ever got to a topical song about a specific event. Robert Hunter’s lyric to “New Speedway Boogie” was a response (in typically oblique form) to a dark day in rock ‘n’ roll history - the Rolling Stones’ ill-fated free concert at the Altamont Speedway in Northern California on December 6th, 1969 - and to the wave of finger-pointing and recrimination that followed. Jerry Garcia quickly set Hunter’s words to music, and the Dead played the song live for the first time two weeks to the day later, on the 20th, with the trauma of Altamont still fresh in so many minds, and the band recorded it as the closing track to side one of “Workingman’s Dead” shortly thereafter. Even with its lightning-in-a-bottle origins, the song’s refrain - “…this darkness got to give” - has remained relevant in troubled times over the ensuing decades. - Gary Lambert

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California.
Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.

I lived through these times and hearing Jerry sing this live for the next few years was chilling , dark and a desperate plea for love and reason. That's how I felt it then and over 50 years later, still so sadly true as then. Never give up, keep shining your love light & leave it on.⚡️🖖🏽⚡️🎸⚡️

Wow, I didn't know this was written about Altamont. I believe my dad was there. I was born a month later. No wonder I had the sticker with these words on my truck windo for so many years. Close to home, still..... One way or another this darkness IS giving. So much love, thats how.

I just heard another G.D. "cover band" somewhere on youtube just prior to hearing this. Those guys were excellent musicians and played the song great just like all the "cover bands". And I hated them just like all the others. Then I stumbled on these guys. I had not much hope yet again. I saw Weir was in it which was a good sign but I really didn't hold out much hope. 5 seconds into it and I'm on high alert. WAIT A MINUTE! What's going on here? These guys sound great! They are noodling around a slow beginning just easing into it. Actually, more like letting it evolve! I am watching and listening in literal disbelief. These guys don't suck! They're not just doing a great rendition of this song. Everybody does that and they all miss the mark. Hence, for me, they all suck. But these guys sounds real. In touch. Connected. Coordinated. I listen to each guy on his instrument which is hard for me because, believe me, I know nothing about music. But I know I like each of these guys and the way they play IMMENSELY! This is unheard of for me. It is NOW OFFICIAL! I am bowled over! Best Grateful Dead song I've eve heard by a Non-Grateful band. Yes, I know Bobby is in there. I am sure Bobby is the leading vibe/spirit but those other guys also seem like they are sincerely in that same space. I love the fact that I love the guy on lead guitar. Normally I hate the lead because they always seem to be trying to hard to be "amazing". He wasn't trying to be or play Jerry Garcia but he seemed to have his own Garcia-esque-ness. I neve say that!!!! I loved him! I loved all the others! Hey Bobby, if you put this band together you deserve to be immensely proud because you did a great job! Best ever! Thank you!

The drummers were also with GD. Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. Maybe their older selves made you not recognize them? The lead is John Mayer, with Oteil Burbridge on bass and Jeff Chimenti on keys.

In the original arrangement the "one way or another" doesn't come in until after the three verses. Ever since they brought it back in 91 they've been singing that part between the verses as well. Not sure why, I think the song works much better structured the original way.

Sounds like he’s playing both E pentatonic minor and E pentatonic major depending on the phrase. He might be playing the E blues scale as well. I haven’t sat down to try and transcribe it note for note but all those scales would fit depending on what kind of mood you want to put across.
